
FOMO, Filters And Fraud: Cybercriminals Target Gen Z's Digital Life
The firm warns that the hyperconnectivity and digital-first lifestyle of Gen Z is creating fertile ground for cyberthreats. From fake shopping sites to malware-laced retro games, attackers are turning popular digital habits into exploitable attack vectors. In response, Kaspersky has launched Case 404 , an interactive AI-led cybersecurity game aimed at raising awareness among Gen Z about the risks hidden in everyday online activities.
Kaspersky flagged oversharing as a major vulnerability, noting that routine social media posts on platforms like TikTok and Instagram can reveal sensitive personal information. Even casual posts showing home interiors, daily routines or pet names could be weaponised in social engineering attacks or password recovery exploits.
The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is also being manipulated through clickbait phishing campaigns. Cybercriminals replicate exclusive concert ticket offers or fake product launches — such as new iPhones or event pre-orders — luring victims into revealing credentials or downloading malware.
Meanwhile, the revival of Y2K fashion and interest in early-2000s games has exposed Gen Z to threats via counterfeit downloads. Fake versions of nostalgic titles like The Sims 2 and Bratz Rock Angelz are being embedded with malicious software, compromising users' devices.
Fast fashion platforms have also become hotspots for phishing schemes. The popularity of retailers such as Shein and Fashion Nova is being mimicked through scam websites and fake promo codes, designed to harvest financial and personal data under the guise of limited-time offers.
Beyond consumerism, the rising use of mental health apps among Gen Z — driven by digital dependency and stress-related conditions such as iDisorder — presents another risk. These platforms store highly sensitive personal data that, if breached, could be exploited for phishing or blackmail.
Kaspersky advises users to verify links before clicking, avoid oversharing online, and ensure strong password hygiene with two-factor authentication. With Gen Z's digital engagement only set to grow, the firm underlines the importance of staying informed as the first line of defence against cyberthreats. Related

Psychology consultant loses over RM260,000 to lottery scam syndicate
TANGKAK: A freelance psychological consultant lost over RM260,000 after being duped by a scam syndicate offering fake online lottery cash prizes. Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the 58-year-old woman was tricked after receiving a WhatsApp message offering lottery winnings worth RM1.5mil, allegedly from a temple. 'The victim then made 20 transactions, transferring a total of RM261,640 of her savings into a mule account between May 31 and Aug 8,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 13). The victim realised she had been deceived after discussing the matter with her sibling and subsequently lodged a police report on Tuesday (Aug 12). The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction. 'The public is advised to remain vigilant and not fall for online lottery cash prize scams. Always verify such offers beforehand to avoid becoming a victim,' said Roslan. He also urged the public to stay updated on the latest scam-related information through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Those who have fallen victim to scams should contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 immediately to block the outflow of funds from the suspect's account.

Images circulating online show products featuring Zara's face and phrases associated with her case being marketed. Many netizens have condemned the move as disrespectful and insensitive, accusing the sellers of turning a heartbreaking incident into a commercial opportunity. The car sticker, priced at RM10 on TikTok, drew criticism from a fellow printing service provider, who said she refused to produce it, calling it an exploitation of grief. 'Even I, as someone who runs a printing service, couldn't bring myself to print it. Don't exploit someone else's grief.' Adding to the outrage, user mr dee37 remarked: 'Don't take advantage of people who are still mourning.' Another commenter, gann__gann, was equally blunt: 'This method is like profiting off someone else's suffering.' Meanwhile, dakjai called out sellers for giving in to opportunism: 'Just because there's an uproar over Zara's death, people now see it as a chance to make money in this way.' Meanwhile, a 'Justice for Zara' keychain selling at just RM2.90 on TikTok prompted a frustrated response from @elmontel on X, who lamented: 'From AI videos to AI songs — now this.' #JusticeForZaraQairina movement gains momentum nationwide
PETALING JAYA: There is a surge of public outrage and solidarity in the case of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir's death in Sabah. Hashtags #JusticeforZara and #JusticeforZaraQairina are dominating social media platforms X and TikTok, with more than 114,000 posts, and the number continues to grow. The movement stems from the death of the 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir on July 16, 2025, after she was found unconscious near her school hostel in Papar, Sabah. Among those who showed their solidarity in the case was none other than Malaysian icon and singer Siti Nurhaliza (@sitizoner). Sharing a heartfelt video message, she wrote: 'Justice for Zara is not just a hashtag. It is the cry of every victim whose dignity has been trampled, whose confidence has been destroyed, and whose smile has been erased by the hands of bullies.
