Jawahar vows to protect rights of SCs
He officially assumed office as the chairman of the State SC Commission at its State headquarters here surrounded by family members.
Speaking after taking charge, Jawahar extended his gratitude to the coalition government for entrusting him with this opportunity. 'My primary goal is the welfare and development of SCs across the State,' he stated.
He lauded the coalition government's efforts, noting that it is working unlike any previous administration, bringing significant happiness to all Dalits in the State through its welfare and development programmes.
Jawahar also addressed the previous increase in SC/ST atrocity cases in the State, assuring that the Commission would operate impartially, transcending political, caste and religious considerations. 'It is a great pleasure to work under the Chief Minister's leadership for the creation of an egalitarian society,' he added.
Senior TDP leader Varla Ramaiah congratulated Jawahar on his appointment, calling it a joyous occasion for all Dalits. Following the assumption of office, MLAs Nakka Ananda Babu, MS Raju, Burla Ramanjaneyulu and MLC Alapati Raja extended their felicitations to the new chairman. The event was also attended by State SC Commission Deputy Director Battula Jeevaputra Kumar and others.
Later, at a felicitation ceremony organised at Tummalapallivari Kala Kshetram, Minister Vasamsetti Subhash, MLAs Bandaru Satyanand Rao, Tangirala Soumya, Vegulla Jogeshwara Rao, Pitani Satyanarayana, SC Mala Welfare Cooperative Finance Corporation chairman Pedapudi Vijayakumar, SAAP chairman Animini Ravi Naidu, and a large number of well-wishers honored the Chairman of the State SC Commission with bouquets and garlands.

Palla calls VSP privatisation charges by Opposition ‘false propaganda'
Dismissing the charges levelled by the Opposition that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA government is hand in glove with the Central government on the privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) as 'baseless', TDP Andhra Pradesh unit president Palla Srinivasa Rao has called it a 'false propaganda' by the trade unions and the Opposition parties. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Mr. Srinivasa Rao reiterated that the NDA government in the State was committed to protecting the VSP and ensuring its continuation as a public sector unit (PSU). 'The YSRCP, Congress, Left parties and trade unions are spreading false propaganda that the VSP would be privatised. Some harsh decisions are inevitable for the continuation of the VSP as a PSU, and this includes the privatisation of some sections of the plant to improve productivity and reduce costs,' Mr. Srinivasa Rao said. He said the bids called for Expression of Interest (EOI) recently was a 'step in that direction'. 'Some sections of the VSP would be given to good companies to improve efficiency. This has been happening for a long. There is nothing new in it,' the TDP leader said. He recalled that then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and MP Yerran Naidu convinced then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and prevented the VSP from going into the red by securing funds for it in 1998. Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu had helped secure Central funds of ₹1,440 crore for the VSP this year to ensure steady supply of raw material. The third Blast Furnace was made operational after years and the VSP has achieved its highest production recently. 'The YSRCP, which had done nothing for the VSP during its tenure, is spreading false propaganda to mislead the plant workers and the people. Some trade union leaders had cheated the workers during the last five years and were responsible for the recruitment of a large number of 'ghost workers' on a contract basis by taking ₹3 lakh to ₹8 lakh from people. A probe will be ordered into the issue,' Mr. Srinivasa Rao said. Pointing out that the monthly salary bill of the VSP employees and officers stands at ₹240 crore, he said, 'If two Blast Furnaces operate to full capacity, the plant can just achieve a breakeven. The third Blast Furnace, which had not been working for the past several years, was made functional after the NDA government came to power in the State.' 'Our goal is the continuation of the VSP as the public sector unit. It should run to its full capacity and to do justice to the 8,000 displaced persons,' Mr. Srinivasa Rao added.

Karnataka Cabinet decides to provide internal reservation among SCs
Agency: Bengaluru, Aug 19 (PTI) The Karnataka cabinet on Tuesday night decided to provide internal reservation among Scheduled Castes by categorising 101 castes among them into three categories, official sources said. In a special meeting, the Cabinet discussed the recommendations of the Justice H N Nagmohan Das Commission report, aimed at providing internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SCs). The commission had submitted its 1,766-page report to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on August 4, and it was placed before the cabinet on August 7. The internal reservation is aimed at slicing up the 17 per cent reservation matrix given to 101 scheduled castes. According to sources, the cabinet decided to accept the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission's report, but made some alterations. Of the 17 per cent reservation that SCs have in the state, as per the internal reservation formula evolved by the Cabinet, the SC (Right) and SC (Left) will get 6 per cent each, while the 'touchable' Dalit communities (Lambani, Bhovi, Korma and Korcha) and most backward and nomadic communities got 5 per cent quota. The commission's report was not officially made public. Speaking to reporters, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said the Cabinet meeting had been 'fruitful" and ministers representing all SC communities are satisfied. 'The cabinet meeting went on for about two-and-a-half hours.. All of us have come out of the cabinet hall happy and satisfied. The state legislature is in session, and there is no scope for revealing details. The chief minister will make a statement on behalf of the government on the floor of the House tomorrow," he said. However, Minister for Backwards Class Development Shivaraj Tangadagi confirmed that internal reservation has been decided upon by making three groups among SCs — right, left and others. He termed the cabinet decision 'historical". 'Reservations provided for these three categories are six, six and five per cent, respectively. After a detailed discussion, we all accepted it. 'The most backwards communities categorised under group A by the commission, have been added to the group of 'Touchable' Dalits (Bhovi, Banjara, Korma and Korcha). While group E of the commission have been added to group B and C," he added. According to sources, most backwards and nomadic communities are apparently not happy with the decision. The government, in November last year, set up the Justice Nagmohan Das commission to recommend internal reservation among SCs by gathering empirical data. This came after the Supreme Court last year allowed states to provide internal reservation, and the Karnataka Cabinet agreed to implement internal reservation. In a landmark verdict delivered by the Supreme Court on August 1 last year, it held that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub-classifications within the SCs, which form a socially heterogeneous class, for granting reservation for the uplift of castes that are socially and educationally more backward. P4 initiative: Selection of ‘Margadarshis' is done voluntarily, says A.P. CM
Reiterating that every decision of the Andhra Pradesh government is aimed at the welfare of the poor, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said the selection of 'Margadarshis' (mentors) under P4 initiative is being done voluntarily, without any compulsion. Saying that each individual chooses their own way of serving society, the Chief Minister cited the example of a devotee who recently donated 121 kg of gold worth ₹140 crore to the Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala from the earnings of his own company, while requesting that his name remain anonymous. 'Some people contribute in their own way. Yet, true satisfaction and fulfilment do not come from wealth or achievements. They come only from serving and supporting the poor,' he observed. Mr. Naidu emphasised that the 'Margadarshis' (mentors) must not only extend financial support but also provide reassurance to the adopted Bangaru Kutumbalu (golden families). 'I am a Margadarshi too. I have adopted 250 families in my Kuppam constituency and will personally devote time to their well-being,' he said, recalling the legacy of social reformers like Dokka Seethamma. During the event, Mr. Naidu interacted, in virtual mode, with the overseas Telugu NRIs who came forward to adopt poor families, including several from Saudi Arabia. Emotional testimonies came from the beneficiaries, including Pavani from Krishna district, who secured employment at HCL through P4. Symbolically, Mr. Naidu presented an 'Adopt Tree' to families from his Kuppam constituency. The Chief Minister launched the symbolic 'Adopt Tree' in Kuppam, presenting it to beneficiary families. The families expressed gratitude, saying that their lives were improving with the government's support. Highlighting women's empowerment, the Chief Minister said that only the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had consistently created platforms for girls' safety, education, and independence. 'Sanjeevani' Mr. Naidu said a new initiative in public health titled Sanjeevani, a programme designed to protect community health, to be launched in collaboration with the Bill Gates Foundation. 'Service brings true contentment, and help brings fulfilment. With P4, our mission is not just to extend assistance but also to give hope and dignity to every poor family,' he said. Senior officials, P4 Foundation vice-chairman Kutumbarao, and NRT chairman Vemuri Ravi Kumar attended the programme.
