Lamine Yamal rejects Lionel Messi comparisons: ‘Going to enjoy myself and be myself'

Indian Express30-04-2025

After playing a crucial role in Spain's triumph at Euro 2024, 17-year-old winger Lamine Yamal has become a mainstay in the Barcelona squad that remains in contention to do the European treble – winning the domestic league and cup titles alongside the UEFA Champions League – at the end of this season.
The temptation to make comparisons to club legend Lionel Messi have persisted through Catalonia and the rest of the world, but any equivalence with the Argentine forward, whom Yamal describes as 'the best player in history,' remain farfetched according to the teenager.
Yamal has 14 goals and 24 assists to his name this season in all competitions and had another brilliant outing in his side's 3-2 win in extra time over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey Final on Sunday. Speaking ahead of the first leg of his Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan, Yamal said he is not comparing himself to anyone yet.
'I don't compare myself to him, because I don't compare myself to anyone – and much less with Messi,' the teenager was quoted as saying BBC. 'I don't think the comparison makes sense, with Messi even less – I'm going to enjoy myself, and be myself.'
With his star turns over the last year and a half for both club and country, Yamal, yet to turn 18, is expected to be one of the future stars in the European game. But he hopes his rise coincides with that of his club.
'The atmosphere at the Copa del Rey final was fantastic. We went out to enjoy ourselves. I would love to experience it again,' he said, according to the club website, ahead of the match against Inter. 'We give everything as we feel the shirt because we have grown up here and we know what it means. I think that has a lot to do with it. I don't hope that it is Lamine Yamal's era, but Barca's era.'

FIH Pro League: India men fail to snap losing run, suffer 2-3 loss against Australia in Manpreet Singh's 400th match

It was goals by Tim Brand (4'), Blake Govers (5') and Cooper Burns (18') that set up the victory for Australia while Sanjay (3') and Dilpreet Singh (36') scored for India. read more Talisman Manpreet Singh's 400th milestone international match didn't go as he would have hoped, with India going down 2-3 to Australia in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 (Men) in Antwerp on Sunday. It was goals by Tim Brand (4'), Blake Govers (5') and Cooper Burns (18') that set up the victory for Australia while Sanjay (3') and Dilpreet Singh (36') scored for India. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After getting off to a fine start, with an opening goal coming only in the third minute through the handy work of Sanjay who picked up the rebound from a PC to put India ahead by 1-0, India lost the lead with Australia responding swiftly with an equaliser in the very next minute. It was Tim Brand who scored in a sensational fashion and only seconds later, they stunned India with a second goal through Blake Govers. There was little India goalie Krishan Pathak could do to stop the blazing Aussie attack. It was perhaps one of the fastest 10 minutes in any game this far in the European leg of the tournament, with both teams living up to the billing producing a high-octane encounter. Full-Time! A spirited showing from the Men in Blue, with early intent and goals from Sanjay and Dilpreet Singh keeping us in the hunt. Despite a late push, Australia take this one by a narrow margin. A performance full of grit, and plenty to build on. India 🇮🇳 2 – 3 🇦🇺… — Hockey India (@TheHockeyIndia) June 15, 2025 At the first quarter break, Australia was in lead by 2-1 and extended it to 3-1 when Cooper Burns struck one past Pathak in the 18th minute. This goal put India under the pump with Australia attempting to increase their advantage with fast-paced attack. The next few minutes saw both team trade PCs but neither found success, ending the first half with Australia leading by two goals. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Following the ten-minute break, India returned with fresh vigour to reduce the deficit. Good stick work was on display when Abhishek set up Dilpreet to score a fine field goal in the 36th minute. This was an important goal to keep India in the hunt but Australian defence was relentless, not allowing any loop-sided marking in the circle. With just one goal difference between the two sides, it was going to be a nail-biting final quarter. There were a few moments that could have brought India back in the fold with an equaliser but they couldn't capitalise on the chances. Australia did well to restrict India in the final stretch to pick up the crucial winning points from this game. 'It is unfortunate we have lost six back-to-back matches here. It has never happened before but if you see, all these games have been very close and we have done well overall but have not been able to finish well. This is something we will deliberate on and try to bounce back in the upcoming matches,' stated Manpreet Singh after the game. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Mehdi Taremi stuck in Iran, to miss FIFA Club World Cup start for Inter

Inter Milan's newly signed forward Mehdi Taremi has found himself stuck in Tehran, unable to travel amid the ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel. As a result, he will be absent from the team's opening match at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. Taremi had recently featured for Iran in a World Cup qualifier, where he contributed a goal in their 3-0 win over North Korea. However, due to the escalating geopolitical situation, commercial flights out of Iran have been disrupted, preventing the 32-year-old from joining his club in Los Angeles. A representative from Inter Milan confirmed to AFP that Taremi remains in Iran and is currently unable to make the journey to the United States. His absence will be felt as Inter prepares to face Mexican side Monterrey on Tuesday at the historic Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena. The Club World Cup fixture will also mark the managerial debut of Cristian Chivu, who was appointed head coach following the departure of Simone Inzaghi. Inzaghi stepped down after Inter suffered a heavy 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final. During a press briefing held at Inter's training base in Beverly Hills, Chivu, the 44-year-old former Romanian international, expressed both optimism and reflection. "We're coming off a season that had its ups and downs, but we shouldn't overlook the achievements," Chivu said. "This squad demonstrated incredible quality. We reached the final stages in both Serie A and the Champions League." Chivu also pushed back against the notion that the season was a failure. "Failure only exists when you stop trying or start making excuses. Eliminating teams like Bayern Munich and Barcelona shows our strength. We were among Europe's elite for much of the season." Despite the turbulent start to his tenure, Chivu remains focused on rebuilding momentum as Inter looks to capture international silverware, even as they begin their campaign without one of their key attacking players.
