Talisman Manpreet Singh's 400th milestone international match didn't go as he would have hoped, with India going down 2-3 to Australia in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 (Men) in Antwerp on Sunday. It was goals by Tim Brand (4'), Blake Govers (5') and Cooper Burns (18') that set up the victory for Australia while Sanjay (3') and Dilpreet Singh (36') scored for India.

After getting off to a fine start, with an opening goal coming only in the third minute through the handy work of Sanjay who picked up the rebound from a PC to put India ahead by 1-0, India lost the lead with Australia responding swiftly with an equaliser in the very next minute. It was Tim Brand who scored in a sensational fashion and only seconds later, they stunned India with a second goal through Blake Govers.
There was little India goalie Krishan Pathak could do to stop the blazing Aussie attack. It was perhaps one of the fastest 10 minutes in any game this far in the European leg of the tournament, with both teams living up to the billing producing a high-octane encounter.

At the first quarter break, Australia was in lead by 2-1 and extended it to 3-1 when Cooper Burns struck one past Pathak in the 18th minute. This goal put India under the pump with Australia attempting to increase their advantage with fast-paced attack. The next few minutes saw both team trade PCs but neither found success, ending the first half with Australia leading by two goals.

Following the ten-minute break, India returned with fresh vigour to reduce the deficit. Good stick work was on display when Abhishek set up Dilpreet to score a fine field goal in the 36th minute. This was an important goal to keep India in the hunt but Australian defence was relentless, not allowing any loop-sided marking in the circle.
With just one goal difference between the two sides, it was going to be a nail-biting final quarter. There were a few moments that could have brought India back in the fold with an equaliser but they couldn't capitalise on the chances. Australia did well to restrict India in the final stretch to pick up the crucial winning points from this game.
'It is unfortunate we have lost six back-to-back matches here. It has never happened before but if you see, all these games have been very close and we have done well overall but have not been able to finish well. This is something we will deliberate on and try to bounce back in the upcoming matches,' stated Manpreet Singh after the game.

Vadodara to host men's ODI after 16 years!
Vadodara: The 16-year-long wait for cricket-loving Barodians is finally set to end. The city will host a men's one-day international (ODI) at the Kotambi International Cricket Stadium. Coincidentally, the last ODI played in the city in 2010 was also between India and New Zealand at the Reliance Stadium. India won the match by nine wickets. "It is a matter of privilege for a venue to be chosen to host an international cricket match in any format. The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) is honoured as it has been given an opportunity to host the India-New Zealand ODI," said Pranav Amin, BCA president. The BCCI recently announced its cricketing calendar for the rest of the year, but Vadodara didn't figure on the list of venues for any international men's cricket match in 2025. Sources in the BCA said that Amin took up the matter with the BCCI and requested the senior officials to consider the city as a venue for the men's ODI or international T20 match, as the city now has a brand new international cricket stadium. BCA officials said that the city will now be regularly allotted ODIs and international T20 matches. The city has in the past hosted 10 ODIs at Reliance Stadium. However, the BCCI brought in a rule that mandated the state cricket associations to own a stadium for hosting international matches. The BCA didn't have a stadium of its own and hence missed out on several opportunities to host ODIs, T20 internationals, and IPL matches over the last 16 years. India suffer sixth consecutive defeat in Pro League, lose 2-3 to Australia
The Indian men's hockey team's wretched run in the European leg of the FIH Pro League continued as it endured a sixth defeat in a row, losing 3-2 to Australia, here Sunday. India has already lost matches to Netherlands and Argentina even as all the games were close. Former India captain Manpreet Singh, who played his 400th match on Sunday, failed to inspire his side despite taking the early lead. Sanjay (3rd minute) and Dilpreet Singh (36th) scored for India, while Tim Brand (4th), Blake Govers (5th) and Cooper Burns (18th) sounded the board for Australia. The men's team will next play Belgium here on June 21. In London, the women's team fought on equal terms against Australia but conceded a last-minute goal to lose 2-1. This was India's second consecutive defeat to Australia. India took the lead in the third minute through a field goal from Vaishnavi Phalke and maintained the 1-0 lead at half time. But Australia restored parity in the 37th minute through Amy Lawton. The match was heading towards a draw but Lexie Pickering scored the winner from a penalty-corner variation in the 60th minute to break Indian hearts. The men will next play Belgium in Antwerp on June 21 while the women go up against Argentina in London on Tuesday.
