Watch: Nintendo Direct showcases new 'Hyrule Warriors,' 'Octopath Traveler'
The show kicked off with a cinematic trailer for Capcom's Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, which is coming to Switch 2 in 2026.
The game, which features a stylish, animated art style, is the first Stories entry in the Monster Hunter franchise since Wings of Ruin in 2021.
The Plants vs. Zombies series will also return with Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, which brings back the franchise's classic, tower defense gameplay. Replanted, which releases on the original Switch and Switch 2 on Oct. 23, also features new co-op and PvP modes.
Nintendo also released a new trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which is coming to Switch 2 this winter. The action game, which takes place before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has players taking on large waves of enemies. Nintendo said more info about the game will be announced soon.
Developer and publisher Square Enix ended the show with two games: The first, titled The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, is an action role-playing game that features HD-2D graphics and co-op capability. Players take on the titular hero on a grand, fantasy-themed quest. The game is coming to the Switch 2 in 2026 with a demo available for download today.
Square Enix also showcased another entry in their critically-acclaimed role-playing series Octopath Traveler, titled Octopath Traveler 0. The game, which also features HD-2D graphics, is coming to the original Switch and Switch 2 on Dec. 4.
Square Enix said players will start from zero in the new game as they go on a quest for restoration and retribution. Players will also be rebuilding their hometown.
Other games showcased and announced for Switch 2 include Once Upon a Katamari which arrives on Oct. 24, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero on Nov. 14, Pac Man World 2 on Sept. 26, Apex Legends on Aug. 5 and Star Wars Outlaws on Sept. 4.

John Woo, Tsui Hark retrospective to play U.S., Canada through 2026

Studios announced Monday the Hong Kong Cinema Classics theatrical retrospective will continue in cities across the United States and Canada into 2026. The retrospective includes new 4K restorations of films by directors John Woo and Tsui Hark. The Los Angeles retrospective began Saturday with a screening of Hard Boiled and continues through Aug. 30. John Woo spoke with UPI about the films in the series, which show how he used slow motion to emphasize elegance and beauty, like a dance scene. Other films include Woo's The Killer, Bullet in the Head and the A Better Tomorrow trilogy, the first two directed by Woo and third by Hark. Hark's films City on Fire, Peking Opera Blues and A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy are also part of the series. The series begins Sept. 1 in Amherst, Mass., Chicago, Columbus, Ohio and Ottowa and Toronto in Ontario, Canada. It opens Sept. 5 in Boston, Dallas and Houston, Detroit, San Francisco, St. Louis and Montreal, Quebec. Austin, Texas opens the series Sept. 6. It plays Las Vegas Sept.10. Two theaters in Atlanta, Ga. open the series Sept. 12 and 18. It comes to Vancouver, British Columbia Sept. 19. Charlotte, N.C. gets the series Sept. 23 and Pittsburg, Pa. Sept. 25. October and November brings the series to Denver, Nashville, Rochester, N.Y., Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore. Additional dates are to be announced. Shout! Studios, a Radial Entertainment Company, spearheaded the 4K restorations and new English subtitle translations when it obtained the rights to the Golden Princess catalog in January. Shout! partners with GKIDS on the theatrical releases. Many of the films are available on video-on-demand for rental and purchase. Shout! will release physical 4K UHD on dates to be announced this year.

Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Denzel Washington's son is kidnapped in a ransom plot in Highest 2 Lowest, the actor's fifth collaboration with Spike Lee. In a new trailer for the crime thriller released Monday, Washington portrays "a titan music mogul" who attempts to negotiate his son's release, according to an official synopsis. "I know what it is to risk everything you have for something that you want," he says in the preview. "I know what that means -- to have nothing and want everything." The feature takes its inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's High and Low and also stars Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera and A$AP Rocky. Washington and Lee first worked together on the 1990 film Mo' Better Blues. Their most recent collaboration was Inside Man (2007).
