In my poor growing season, edible flowers are a small, tasty win

The Guardian04-07-2025
My partner and I have a ritual that makes an appearance at this time of year. When we sit down for dinner, we count up how many crops from the garden we've managed to incorporate into our meal. As I've said in previous columns, I'm not having the best growing season despite the abundance of sunshine, so I'm relying on small, edible wins this summer. (Edible flowers have become more of a feature than ever in our kitchen.)
There aren't many plants that I grow solely for their blooms – edible or not – but fortunately, there are a fair few crops that just happen to produce flowers you can eat, meaning it's likely you, too, might be growing some edible flowers already.
For the first few springs in my veg patch, I sowed the seeds of calendula, violas and nasturtiums as beneficial companion plants to encourage pollinators. Six growing seasons later and these stalwarts reappear reliably when the soil is warm enough. Calendula produce bright flowers whose petals can be scattered on a salad, but my preference is nasturtiums, which have a punchy, peppery flavour. The smiley-faced violas taste subtly sweet and are ideal for decorating cakes.
Many of the annual and perennial herbs in our vegetable gardens not only produce flavoursome leaves but beautiful and delicious flowers, too. Chives develop bright purple pom-poms that taste like the oniony leaves but are milder. Dill is another plant that I adore but, given it often bolts before I've harvested all the leaves I'd hoped for, I'm grateful that their flowers are also edible. Rosemary, thyme and, of course, lavender flowers are all edible and make a pretty garnish on a summer dish or cake.

There are a number of vegetables whose flowers are worth tasting. Courgette flowers – both pollen-bearing and fruit-bearing – are delicious, especially when prepared the Italian way – stuffed with a mild cheese and herbs, lightly battered and fried. The cute little flowers of peas and beans taste like a sweet, floral iteration of the fruit counterpart. (Be careful not to mistakenly harvest ornamental sweetpea flowers as these are toxic.)
It's worth bearing in mind that harvesting the flowers of fruiting plants will have an impact on your yield. Not a problem if you're picking more courgettes than you can comfortably offload, but an issue if you've only got a few beanstalks and were hoping to fill your freezer.
When harvesting, be mindful not to crush petals as you gently shake off any creatures that might be hiding inside. Petals don't take kindly to being vigorously washed but you can dip them in water and leave on a tea towel to dry. While not all these flowers offer up palette-igniting flavours, our dinners have never been prettier.

Brooklyn Beckham follows in David's footsteps as he 'reveals plans to buy a Napa Valley winery for his wife Nicola Peltz'

is reportedly following in his father David's footsteps and has plans to buy a vineyard for his wife Nicola Peltz. The aspiring chef and wine lover, 26, - who is currently based in LA with wife Nicola, 30, - has big dreams to own a winery in Napa, according to a new report. News of the plans come as the Beckham family feud is continuing to rumble on, with Brooklyn and Nicola renewing their vows this past weekend without any of their family present. David reportedly purchased a private vineyard in Napa Valley for his wife Victoria back in 2008 - though its location and details have always been kept a secret, claims The Sun via Hello! Magazine. David reportedly presented Victoria with the surprise during a trip the US and unveiled the vineyard by gifting Victoria a bottle of wine with her name on the label. A source told The Sun at the time: 'The Beckhams became wine buffs when he played in Spain. The vineyard went down a storm with Victoria. She was delighted.' And following in his footsteps, now Hello! magazine reports that Brooklyn's 'ultimate desire' is to own a winery in Napa. They report: 'His ultimate desire is to open his own winery in Napa with enough land for Nicola to not only rescue as many dogs as possible but for them to also raise miniature cattle.' Representatives for Brooklyn have been contacted by Daily Mail for comment. Unlike other celebrities Victoria and David haven't publicly marketed any wines from their vineyard and the exact value of the whole property isn't publicly available. But Hello reports that the vineyard sits in the grounds of a mansion and is 'valued at many millions of dollars'. As well as the Napa Valley vineyard David and Victoria used to own a £1.5million villa in St Tropez which had its own vineyard. In 2003, when David left Manchester United, he and Victoria splashed out on the holiday home near St Tropez. The property had 34 rooms, a heated pool and its own vineyard along with a private chapel. They put in a large amount of money for renovations, adding a black marble kitchen, Moroccan-style pool house and chintzy living room. In the early years, before David went to play for LA Galaxy, the family used to spend their holidays there. It was put up for sale in 2015 for £2.5 million and was re-listed for £2.4 million in 2016, after the couple realised that they never used the house yet were still paying for its staff and upkeep. The winery revelations come after heartbroken David and Victoria fear their eldest son Brooklyn has 'quit the family' after he failed to invite any of his relatives to his secret vow renewal. Brooklyn and wife Nicola, who first wed in 2022, said 'I do' for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family who had key roles in the day, with the Beckham clan nowhere in sight. Nicola wore her 70-year-old mother's vintage 1985 bridal gown for the big day, while her father Nelson, 83, was given the key role of officiating. Brooklyn's parents and siblings Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14, reportedly only found out about their big day after reading about it on a US website. Their eldest son has become increasingly estranged from the family ever since he snubbed his father's 50th birthday, and now, the family fear it's a final kick in the teeth for the family. A source told The Sun: 'This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria. Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. 'His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them.' The source added: 'It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy - and see no way back. 'Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the 'Beckham' surname - will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 - is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? It certainly feels like it.'. Daily Mail has contacted Brooklyn, Nicola and the Beckhams' representatives for comment. Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in a lavish £3million ceremony in 2022, when relations first began to sour with his parents in the run-up to the big day. After shunning a dress made by her fashion designer Victoria in favour of a Valentino gown in 2022 - a choice which wasn't well received - Nicola once again snubbed her mother-in-law and wore her mother Claudia's vintage wedding gown. It is a poignant message to Posh and Becks', whom he and Nicola have grown increasingly estranged over recent months. All the while the Beckhams were said to be upset by the Peltzes in 2022 who they felt were taking over the wedding. And ever since their first big nuptials in April 2022, the two families have not reunited and Nicola has rarely been pictured with the Beckhams. Brooklyn and wife Nicola , who first wed in 2022, said 'I do' for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family who had key roles in the day, with the Beckham clan nowhere in sight (their engagement post pictured) The couple shared the images on Instagram on Monday, alongside the words 'only love.' Nicola wore the same original $1.8mill ring set adding a glinting filter onto the dazzling jewels. Brooklyn described the vow renewal as a 'really beautiful experience' while admitting he is still head-over-heels for his wife. Speaking for the first time about the day, the 26-year-old admitted he'd happily do it 'every single day' if he could. Brooklyn said the moment was all about creating a 'really cute memory' they'd treasure forever.

Princess Diana's niece Lady Kitty Spencer, 34, shares rare glimpse of her 66-year-old billionaire husband during family beach getaway to the Hamptons

Lady Kitty Spencer has shared a rare glimpse of her husband Michael Lewis during a family holiday in The Hamptons, Long Island. Princess Diana 's niece took to Instagram on Monday to share a fleeting glimpse of her billionaire beau, 66, during a sun-soaked trip to the affluent summer destination. The 34-year-old model and aristocrat, who is the eldest daughter of Earl Charles Spencer, shared a carousel of enviable snaps from the picturesque getaway. Kitty's eagle-eyed followers were quick to spot her rarely-seen partner in a sweet clip with their daughter Athena, two, at the beach. The video showed Kitty and her South African-born businessman husband holding the hands of their little girl, who was born in April 2023, as they paddled in the waves. Kitty, who looked casual in jeans shorts and a white T-shirt, swept her blonde locks back in a hair clip as she accessorised with designer sunglasses. Her husband Michael looked summery in a blue linen shirt and matching shorts as he held Athena's hand in the water. Elsewhere in the Instagram carousel, Kitty shared several pictures, including one of her and her mini me daughter relaxing on the sand in matching knit jumpers, which featured the American flag. In another snap, the blonde beauty can be seen in the garden tending to flowers with her lookalike daughter. Lady Kitty has kept her relationship with the fashion mogul largely out of the public eye, rarely sharing photos of him on social media and choosing to step out solo for most red-carpet events. The couple wed at the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, a stunning country mansion with views of Rome, on July 24, 2021. The celebrations stretched across four days and were attended by close friends, including the pop star Pixie Lott and the Marchioness of Bath. An expert estimated the day itself would have cost in excess of £1million. Photographs shared at the time gave snapshots of the day, including the bride's wardrobe of bespoke Dolce & Gabbana gowns, including her wedding dress. The model caught the eye of business tycoon when they met through mutual friends in 2018. Lady Kitty has made a name for herself in the fashion world, as a spokesmodel for Dolce & Gabbana, who supplied five dresses for her wedding, and walking in several Fashion Weeks across the globe. Meanwhile, Michael knows a thing or two about fashion as well, being the chairman of the Foschini Group, which owns British high street chains Whistles and Phase Eight. The tycoon is believed to be worth £80million, with a £19million property in London and another home in his native South Africa, where his wife grew up after her Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer and his first wife, Victoria Lockwood, divorced. Michael comes from wealth, thanks to his grandfather's furniture retail business, which was founded in the 1930s. Stanley Lewis, Michael's father, bought a stake in the closing retailer Foschini Group in the 1980s, with Michael later taking his place on the Foschini Group board. The tycoon has been the board's chairman since 2015 and presides over a vast retail empire. Michael, who is five years older than Lady Kitty's father, wed his first wife in 1985, and the pair welcomed three children before eventually calling it quits. It is thought that the businessman and Kitty met through friends in 2018, with their relationship being made public when the pair were spotted leaving a New York hotel together in 2019. He proposed to the society model shortly before Christmas 2019 and their engagement became public in January 2020. His three adult children from a previous marriage attended his and Lady Kitty's Italian nuptials in 2021, and the socialite is understood to have formed strong relationships with her husband's children. Michael and Kitty had their first child together in April 2023, and they shared a rare glimpse of their daughter Athena to mark her second birthday this year. Kitty took to Instagram to share a heartwarming message about her little one alongside a series of intimate family snaps. The little girl has a stock of blonde hair just like her mother and was shown running on beaches, on an Easter Egg hunt and toddling through London. 'Two years of you lighting up our world, my darling Athena. 'You are sunshine and joy and all things magic. My little girl forever. 'How proud I am to be your mummy. I love you more than you could ever imagine or I could ever articulate,' the model, who is a first cousin of Prince William, wrote. Alongside the beautiful message, Kitty shared several pictures including one of her dressed in a white crotchet co-ord as she held her little girl, dressed in a blue and white dress, as they walked along the beach. In a second black and white picture, the socialite bent down on the sandy beach and could be seen beaming as she chatted to Athena - who she secretly gave birth to in April last year. And that wasn't the only birthday message for the toddler who received equally charming posts from her aunts Lady Eliza and Lady Amelia. In a separate social media post Eliza, 32, shared a picture of her elder sister playing with Athena on a beach in Cape Town, where the family grew up. Dressed only in a white shirt with her blonde locks falling over her shoulders, Kitty reached out to her daughter who wore a matching white Broderie Anglais dress. Eliza also shared a close up black and white photo of Athena feet in the sand and wrote alongside the adorable snaps: 'Happy 2nd Birthday to my sweetest little love. You are my whole heart, and I love and cherish you more than you will ever know. Thank you for giving us the greatest gift @ Taking to her Instagram story the model also poked fun at her sisters kitty and Amelia, sharing a picture of the toddler in a pink toy car. She wrote over the picture: 'Already better than her mummy and aunties'. And Eliza's twin sister Amelia also got in on the action sharing previously unseen family pictures including a black and white one of little Athena climbing up some steps while her mother Kitty holds her hands.
