LSU football is already practicing for week one showdown with Clemson

USA Today2 days ago
LSU football head coach Brian Kelly said the Tigers have already begun official practice for the week one battle vs. Clemson.
LSU ranks No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll while Clemson sits at No. 6.
"Yeah, we started Tuesday, you know, working towards Clemson demo, if you will, scout, however you want to use the words. You know, we started to look at, you know, going up against their fronts and certainly their offensive structure. We began that on Tuesday," Kelly said.
Kelly said this is earlier than when LSU began week one preparation last year.
"I've had teams that I haven't started on an opponent until the last week because we had so many question marks about so many different parts of our offense, defense, and special teams. This one has been, I think, driven by the fact that we have some veteran players on both sides of the ball that allowed us to transition into our opponent a little bit sooner," Kelly said.
What is the betting line for LSU football vs. Clemson?

ESPN Analyst's Son Was Just Named The No. 1 Recruit in America

ESPN on Thursday dropped its SC NEXT 60 for the high school basketball Class of 2027, and a very familiar name sits at the top of the list. Marcus Spears Jr. has been named by ESPN as the No. 1 basketball recruit in the country. And if his name sounds eerily familiar it's because his father, Marcus Spears Sr., is an ESPN and Monday Night Football analyst. The elder Spears was a standout at LSU before he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys with the 20th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. That Marcus Jr., a 6-foot-7 power forward, opted for basketball instead of football comes as no surprise. His father was once a highly touted basketball recruit who earned Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year honors in high school before committing to play football at the SEC powerhouse. What's more, Marcus Jr.'s mother was also a standout basketball star. Aiysha Smith played at LSU before the Washington Mystics selected her with the seventh overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft. Suffice it to say, Marcus Jr. has some serious basketball pedigree. 'I have a lot of respect for my peers and they are great talents as well. To be recognized as the top player in the country in my class is not only an honor but a testament to all the work that's been put in so far," Marcus Jr. said via ESPN. "Much more work to do but honored to be in this spot. The work is all that matters." It goes without saying, Marcus Jr. will have plenty of collegiate options. According to the national recruiting site 247Sports, Marcus Jr. already has 12 offers, including from Kentucky, Houston and, of course, LSU. No word if Marcus Sr. will encourage his son to follow in his parent's footsteps and become a Tiger, but it's safe to say Marcus Sr. will carve out time from his busy schedule as an NFL analyst to watch his son ball out. Jets' rookie tight end could play a major role

The Jets used their second-round selection of this past draft on tight end Mason Taylor out of LSU. And while he is just a rookie looking to cement his name in the league, he could play a major role for this Jets team. Mason Taylor has succeeded as a pass catcher before At LSU, Taylor broke records and was an absolute stud at the tight end position. He seemed to always be open, and the Tigers used him heavily as a receiver. In his final collegiate season, the Jets' tight end put up 546 yards and two touchdowns on 55 receptions. He is seen as the most productive tight end ever at LSU. The Jets will need Taylor this upcoming season, as behind him at the tight end position, they do not have a lot of depth. He is clearly their top guy and will provide big relief for the Jets' offense. Jets need a safety blanket for Justin Fields The Jets do not have many big targets for their offense this season, so having a safety net on in the passing game will be important. This is what Taylor can bring to the field. The Jets can run different play actions and different standard passes, all while having Taylor run some form of block and releases, giving new QB Justin Fields a guy to whom he could check down if nothing is open. He is working to become a complete tight end, so once he develops his run blocking more, the play-action game could open up. Taylor can be a big threat in the passing game, and they will use him in many ways other than just as a safety blanket. This season, we might see a breakout right away for the Jets' tight end. He has been having a strong camp and could bring that to the game on Sundays. SMU coach calls ESPN rankings system 'rigged' after latest Football Power Index update

SMU head football coach Rhett Lashlee is doubling down on his belief that ESPN favorites certain conferences with their rankings. ESPN released its first Football Power Index rankings in June. The Mustangs came out as No. 20 among college football teams entering the 2025 season, though ACC teams like Miami (No. 9) and Clemson (No. 11) were higher on the list. The Football Power Index is a "measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season." Now, ESPN updated those rankings on Friday, and the Mustangs, coming off a surprise College Football Playoff trip after going 11-3 last season, only moved up one spot to No. 19. Miami and Clemson, though, took a tumble to No. 17 and No. 16 respectively. This led Lashlee to call ESPN's ranking system a farce. "Because the whole thing is rigged," he wrote on X. Lashlee was also vocal during last season, where he questioned his belief that the ACC and the Big 12 were disrespected compared to the Big Ten and the SEC, calling the latter "top-heavy." "There's other leagues that claim depth," Lashlee said, per the New York Post. "The SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964. Same six. Not a single one has been different since 1964. That's top-heavy to me. That's not depth." Lashlee clearly doesn't just believe in his Mustangs to have more success heading into 2025, but he wants some more respect for the schools he'll be going up against. Clemson, led by veteran head coach Dabo Swinney, was the school that beat SMU during the 2024 ACC Championship, 34-31, though Lashlee's group was the favorite in the tilt at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lashlee's quest to lead his Mustangs to more success in 2025 begins with their first game against East Texas A&M on Aug. 30.
