Tyson Fury backed for Francis Ngannou rematch with very different rules

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

The pair first went head-to-head in the boxing ring back in 2023 - but a former boxing world champion has called for the two heavyweights to rematch in a different setting
British boxing legend George Groves has backed Tyson Fury to rematch Francis Ngannou - but this time in a cage.
Ngannou - a former UFC heavyweight champion - made his professional boxing debut against Fury back in 2023. The 'Predator' shocked the world after scoring a knockdown in the contest - but would ultimately end up losing the dust-up on points.

The ex-UFC star has only fought once more in the ring - a knockout loss to Anthony Joshua in March 2024. Ngannou made the return to the MMA cage seven months later and would go on to knock Renan Ferreira out inside the first round. With the 38-year-old eager to get back in the cage soon, there are no real top contenders for the Cameroon native in the PFL.

However, Groves has a unique proposition. The former boxing world champion has called for Fury to rematch Ngannou in the cage following their fight in the boxing ring. In an interview with Action Network, when asked about Fury potentially making a return to fighting, he said: "I think he will come back and fight Anthony Joshua if there are guaranteed purses.
"If you are going to fight Joshua, then it has to be soon and maybe they will announce that fight straight after Usyk v Dubois and the winner will still dream of becoming world champion again. But I would like to see Tyson Fury do something different and get in the cage.
"I heard rumours of him fighting Francis Ngannou in the cage and that sounds brilliant, I would 100% pay for that. I'm all over that. He's a very good athlete who can chop and change, let's see if he can learn some wrestling or Jujitsu and a bit of defence before putting on some 4oz gloves on and see if he can put Ngannou away."
He added: "Francis Ngannou stepped into Fury's domain and give him a run for his money and should've won but Fury got away with it. Let's see if Fury can return the favour by jumping in the Octagon and have a scrap with Ngannou, that's what I would like to see. Fury is past his best as a boxer, but he has not been sitting on the couch for six or seven years. He boxed less than a year ago, is a fit athlete and maybe he's already been in the gym with the cage fighters and the MMA guys. I'd love to see him in the cage next."
Fury announced his retirement from boxing earlier this year. However, the 36-year-old has teased a potential return to competition over the last few weeks. While Groves' comments may come as a bit of a shock, the 'Gypsy King' does have some slight experience in the world of MMA.
In 2021, MMA star Nick Diaz took to social media to show footage of a training session he did with Fury. The Brit responded by noting how much fun he'd had working on the ground game. Diaz and his brother Nate are both jiu-jitsu experts, and he likely showed Fury the ropes during a gym session. In a comment under the elder Diaz brother's post, Fury said: "Nice bit of rolling around the mat."
A year later, Fury's close friend and former training partner Tom Aspinall opened up on training with the boxing icon. He told Sky Sports: 'I've grappled with him [Fury] before. He's interested in it. So, I know he's done bits of grappling, bits of kicks, and all that. He was down in our gym training with Darren Till before, doing kicks on the pads and all that stuff. So, he's definitely got interest in it. I don't know. I'd love to see it, though.'

Lionel Messi's changing room conduct emerges as ex-team-mate tells all

Ex-Barcelona star Marc Bartra has opened up about the intense drive and high standards of the legendary Lionel Messi. The defender shared a dressing room with the Argentine icon at the Catalan giants for six years. Bartra, who rose through the ranks at La Masia alongside Messi and spent his early professional years at Camp Nou, has since moved on to play for Borussia Dortmund and is currently in his second spell at Real Betis. He recently contested the Europa Conference League final against Chelsea, losing 4-1. The ex-Spain international has now spoken out about his time with Messi during the latter's golden years at Barcelona. Appearing on the Spanish TV show Viajando con Chester, hosted by Risto Mejide, Bartra revealed insights into Messi's self-criticism and relentless pursuit of excellence. He recounted witnessing Messi berate himself for errors made on the pitch, even to the point of swearing and tugging at his own shirt in frustration, before making an immediate amends when he took to the field again. Bartra recalled Messi's reaction after missing a penalty, saying: "He has had bad moments on a football field. I've seen him in a dressing room swearing at himself and pulling his shirt for missing a penalty. I heard him saying, 'What have I done?' "Then he would come out in the second half and be the best, dominating the field. That's what made him the best. Beyond technique, it's about getting up again. "It is about knowing what to do with what happens to you, what solution you bring to what you encounter. Not playing the victim, but taking it with responsibility." Messi's passion for the game and winning attitude were also echoed by Josef Martinez, another former team-mate who played with the Argentine maestro at Inter Miami, reports the Mirror US. The Venezuelan, who briefly shared a changing room with Messi in Florida before moving to CF Montreal, was taken aback by the Argentine superstar's down-to-earth nature and meticulous habits. "Everything changed in a day. I swear. It was shocking," said Martinez. "You see him sitting there, and he's the most normal person I've ever seen in my life, and he's famous. "Not even God is as well-known as he is. Seeing him sitting there was something impressive: folding his shirt, matching his uniform with his watch, and shoes with his shirt. "He would sit down, and you'd say: 'Wow!' He'd greet you normally. That, despite being a guy who has won everything, he always arrived first for training." Martinez continued, adding that Messi raised the standards of everyone in his squad, as he claimed: "He was great with us, he was great with me. And you felt you had to be at his same level." ‘Nervous' Emma Raducanu enjoys win with Katie Boulter in rare doubles outing

Raducanu had before this played doubles just once, partnering Clara Tauson in round one of the 2022 Washington Open, and alongside Boulter was fully backed by the home crowd on the packed and more intimate Court One. The WTA 500 event marks the first time in 52 years Queen's has hosted women's tennis, and while the pairing of British number one Boulter and number two Raducanu were not quite ready to submit their entries to Wimbledon, there were hugs and fist-pumps aplenty as they got their grass court seasons underway. Friends who win together 🤗@WTA | #HSBCChampionships — LTA (@the_LTA) June 9, 2025 'I was actually very nervous before the match,' said 2021 US Open champion Raducanu, who will take on Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa in her opening singles match on Tuesday afternoon. 'I don't know if you could tell, but, yeah, probably more nervous than the singles, because I just didn't necessarily know what to do. 'I'm really happy once we got out there, Katie made me feel so comfortable, and I'm just so pleased to get a win.' This Queen's partnership, Raducanu revealed, came 'spontaneously', after a few close calls where she and Boulter nearly joined forces at Madrid, Paris and Miami. Asked it could extend as far as Wimbledon, Raducanu replied: 'We haven't spoken about it. It worked pretty well, so we're just going to keep on trying to do as best we can this week.' Boulter joked: 'Scrap what she said – we're going for the Wimbledon title! No, I'm just kidding.' The British pair claimed an early break in the first set and extended their lead to 4-2 before Wu and Jiang drew level at 4-4. Boulter and Raducanu broke back and eventually claimed the opening set, converting their second set point. Momentum in their favour, the Britons made quicker work of the pair from China and Chinese Taipei in the second set, sealed emphatically by Raducanu's volley. Fans on social media were quick to complain that the match was not available to watch in full on the BBC, who did occasionally cut to the British pair but focused on the action on the newly-christened Andy Murray Arena, where the three-time grand slam winner was honoured in a morning ceremony. The PA news agency understands contractural considerations between a number of stakeholders – including the WTA and LTA – contributed to the contest being held on the smaller court. PA has contacted the BBC for comment. Raducanu did not mind the venue, adding: 'I think sometimes on the smaller courts youb get a bigger feel for the match, the atmosphere and the environment, because it's a lot closer, more intimate, and you hear the support more. 'For me, I love playing on those smaller, outside courts where you really feel the support and the crowd gets into it. I was filling my bottle up, and I was literally having a chat in the stands because that's how close it is.' Elsewhere, British number three Sonay Kartal got her singles campaign off to a winning start with a 6-1 3-6 6-3 victory over Australia's world number 16 Daria Kasatkina.

The two-time Wimbledon champion returned to the court for the first time in a year to commemorate the special occasion. It's a venue which holds many memories for the Dunblane star, who said when addressing the crowd: "I've obviously missed being out here. First time not being involved in a grass court season in a while, but I've got a new life now and enjoying being away from the sport. 'It's cool, this tournament and this court has had many special moments for me. It's the place, the tournament not the court, where I won my first match on the ATP Tour, 'It was my most successful event; I always love coming back here at the start of the British summer. "I'm very proud of the results I had here. I'm very grateful and thankful for whoever it was who decided to name the stadium this was.' He was given a guard of honour by the ball kids as he made his way out onto the court. Murray was then joined by former British tennis player and tournament director of the HSBC Championships WTA event, Laura Robson, 10-year-old Gloria Pearce from the Queen's Club Foundation and seven-year-old Jay Ikanone from Greenhouse Sport for a quick doubles match. But before he even picked up his racket, Murray, 38, admitted he was feeling rusty after a year out. He joked: 'My tennis is diabolical nowadays so apologies for what you're about to witness but I'll give it a go'. Moment Andy Murray holes stunning putt from off the green in challenge match with brother Jamie - but rivals have last laugh Murray ended up winning both points with his partner Gloria. He was then given the honour of doing the coin toss for the first match of the WTA 500 event between Petra Kvitova and Beatriz Haddad Maia. It was a highly-anticipated match as it's first time in 52 years that a women's event has been held in London. Haddad Maia came out on top over three sets, winning the second and third set 6-4 after losing the opener 6-2.
