Lionel Messi's changing room conduct emerges as ex-team-mate tells all
Bartra, who rose through the ranks at La Masia alongside Messi and spent his early professional years at Camp Nou, has since moved on to play for Borussia Dortmund and is currently in his second spell at Real Betis. He recently contested the Europa Conference League final against Chelsea, losing 4-1.
The ex-Spain international has now spoken out about his time with Messi during the latter's golden years at Barcelona. Appearing on the Spanish TV show Viajando con Chester, hosted by Risto Mejide, Bartra revealed insights into Messi's self-criticism and relentless pursuit of excellence.
He recounted witnessing Messi berate himself for errors made on the pitch, even to the point of swearing and tugging at his own shirt in frustration, before making an immediate amends when he took to the field again.
Bartra recalled Messi's reaction after missing a penalty, saying: "He has had bad moments on a football field. I've seen him in a dressing room swearing at himself and pulling his shirt for missing a penalty. I heard him saying, 'What have I done?'
"Then he would come out in the second half and be the best, dominating the field. That's what made him the best. Beyond technique, it's about getting up again.
"It is about knowing what to do with what happens to you, what solution you bring to what you encounter. Not playing the victim, but taking it with responsibility."
Messi's passion for the game and winning attitude were also echoed by Josef Martinez, another former team-mate who played with the Argentine maestro at Inter Miami, reports the Mirror US.
The Venezuelan, who briefly shared a changing room with Messi in Florida before moving to CF Montreal, was taken aback by the Argentine superstar's down-to-earth nature and meticulous habits.
"Everything changed in a day. I swear. It was shocking," said Martinez. "You see him sitting there, and he's the most normal person I've ever seen in my life, and he's famous.
"Not even God is as well-known as he is. Seeing him sitting there was something impressive: folding his shirt, matching his uniform with his watch, and shoes with his shirt.
"He would sit down, and you'd say: 'Wow!' He'd greet you normally. That, despite being a guy who has won everything, he always arrived first for training."
Martinez continued, adding that Messi raised the standards of everyone in his squad, as he claimed: "He was great with us, he was great with me. And you felt you had to be at his same level."

Just in time for Halloween? Ibiza Final Boss costume is for sale online
The Ibiza Final Boss is set to be the next Halloween costume trend as outfits of the viral sensation have already started to appear online. Jack Kay, 26, became an internet celebrity after he was filmed 'cutting shapes' on the party island with a gold chain, sunglasses and a baby pink cup in his hand. When he first appeared on phone screens around the country last week, many were shocked to discover his locks were not in fact a hat. The hairstyle, coupled with his shades, gold chain, man bag and huge build, became an instantly-shareable hit. Now fancy dress shops have already started to stock costumes to allow people to share Kay's iconic look. The costumes include a stick on wig and goatee alongside accessories including the gold chain, sunglasses . They have already appeared on Ebay and Amazon. The product description for the costume on Amazon reads: 'Transform into the ultimate party legend with our Adults Ibiza Final Boss Costume Accessory Set – perfect for festivals, fancy dress events, and unforgettable nights out. 'This hilarious and bold kit includes a sleek black bob wig, stick-on goatee, chunky gold chain, and a pair of cool black shades to give you that over-the-top VIP look. 'Whether you're hitting the dance floor, hosting a themed party, or standing out at a stag do, this costume set is guaranteed to get laughs, photos, and attention. 'Comfortable to wear and easy to assemble, it's ideal for quick and impactful transformations without the fuss of a full costume. 'Pair it with your favourite outfit to complete the larger-than-life character, or go all-in for a head-turning Ibiza boss vibe. 'Designed for adults, this fun and versatile set works for club nights, summer festivals, birthday parties, or any event where you want to be the centre of attention. 'Step up, own the room, and let the final boss energy flow.' The costume is up for sale for £14.99 on Amazon. The raver has already held talks with ITV2 bosses about featuring in the next series of Big Brother, according to The Sun. Like other overnight viral stars such as 'Hawk Tuah girl' Hailey Welch and 'Salt Bae' Nusret Gokce, Kay is likely to enjoy a boom in freebies, appearances and sponsorship opportunities. Brand and culture expert Nick Ede told the Daily Mail that the 'Final Boss' of Spanish party islands stands to earn six figures in the next 12 months alone – between nightclub appearances both at home and abroad and potential brand deals. And he added that Kay's masterstroke move of signing with top talent agent Dave Read would steer him well. Read and his talent agency Neon Management are credited with making reality star Joey Essex a millionaire. Mr Ede said: 'It's amazing how he has captured the zeitgeist – he's the most popular thing since the Jet2 holiday adverts, and he can maximise on this for quite a while. 'He's a living caricature. People don't really look like that but he is exactly what you think people who go to Ibiza should look like and be like. It's actually crazy.' Kay, who shared a photo of his 'fresh trim' last week on Instagram, is likely to enjoy the attention of brands, nightclubs and celebrities all keen to be associated with him for some time to come, Mr Ede said. He continued: 'He's off doing nightclub appearances in Ibiza and I can see him doing others around Europe, being sent around by cheap holiday companies to promote their resorts. 'Then, 100 per cent, he'll do nightclub appearances in the UK and that's really lucrative. You can do four or five of them a night. 'That's going to be regular and they pay five to ten grand per appearance. Do four of them a night on a Friday and a Saturday and you can make a lot money. 'That's how people on TOWIE made their money. It wasn't through the show: it was through their nightclub appearances.' It was revealed this week that Kay held a party at a €9million villa in Ibiza at the weekend - with one of the dwarves who was at Lamine Yamal 's controversial 18th birthday party in attendance. Kay threw a party at the villa with a dwarf who had been dressed up to look like a 'mini' version of him, including a bowl cut wig. 'The final boss and the mini boss out tonight, see you soon,' Jack wrote below a video of the pair dancing at the property. The entertainer, Juan Alberto Duaso, was one of five dwarves hired for Barcelona star Yamal's birthday party last month. Their presence at the football star's bash sparked a huge backlash after it was denounced by a disabled rights group, who began legal proceedings against Yamal's team. In response, the Spanish government toughened laws for hiring people with disabilities, including dwarfism, which make it illegal to 'humiliate' or 'mock' them for entertainment - with fines now reaching as high as €600,000. A night earlier, on Saturday, Jack, 26, invited 100 of his fans to the villa for a 'huge party', which featured sets from popular DJs Deniz Menendez and Rsquared. In one picture from the bash, a vape-clutching Jack is seen posing for a picture next to a blonde beauty in a fitted leopard print top, while a group of young women flank his right side. Other clips shared by his friends show the internet sensation dancing while sporting his trademark black glasses, bowl haircut and fitted vest. The videos showed how one of the rooms in the villa has been repurposed into a mini nightclub, complete with strobe lighting, a DJ booth and a bar. It was also reported last week that Kay is fighting to save his relationship to his model girlfriend - after she unceremoniously dumped him as he partied on the White Isle. Alisha, 23, a debt collector, from Co Durham, is said to have been so angry with Mr Kay raving in Ibiza she dumped him before footage spread online and propelled him to viral stardom as the 'Ibiza final boss '. They have since reconciled, but a source close to Mr Kay said he was 'skating on thin ice' over his partying ways. A friend of Mr Kay's told the Daily Mail: 'Alisha called it off when Jack went to Ibiza with the lads. Alisha, 23, a debt collector, from Co Durham, is said to have been so angry with Mr Kay raving in Ibiza she dumped him before footage spread online and propelled him to viral stardom as the 'Ibiza final boss' 'They'd been together for almost a year and he was living at her place but things hadn't been right for months. 'His car is still on her drive, she threw all his clothes in the back of it. She doesn't want him around anymore. 'She's had inklings that something was not right for a while. She just wants to wash her hands of him. 'Alisha is so beautiful. No one is quite sure what she saw in him.' The friend added: 'It's hard to believe that he's been branded the super king of Ibiza - the final boss - when she's been left on her own back here.' When Mr Kay sprung to viral fame after being filmed dancing on the party island, donning a gold chain and baby pink cup, Alisha revealed herself publicly as his girlfriend. She shared a series of TikTok videos captioned 'POV (point of view) ya boyfriends now known as Ibiza final boss'. In the clips, blonde-haired Alisha was seen cuddled up to Mr Kay, with him kissing her on the cheek. However, the friend claimed that Alisha had only posted the video 'to boost her TikTok' and that she had already handed out her marching orders. She has subsequently deleted her presence on social media after Mr Kay's sudden fame. A holiday firm has also sought to capitalise on the craze with a hilarious advert centred on the trim. Big business is piling in on the trend - with On The Beach unveiling two adverts featuring the haircut disguised as an umbrella pole on an idyllic beach, in the hopes of enticing ravers to attend Ibiza's closing parties in September and October. The ads include the hilarious lines such as: 'Hastings to Ibiza from £295pp, Haircut not included' and 'Face the Final Boss, Ibiza from £295pp'. Spokeswoman Zoe Harris said: 'If Jack's "Ibiza final boss" barnet can turn heads faster than a DJ drops the bass, then it will certainly get people's attention on advertising boards. 'The famous mop is now being used to sell our incredible deals to the closing parties in September and October. That's trimmed down prices for holidays that are a cut above the rest.' She added: 'Ibiza is such a popular spot for Brits and we have no doubt that this viral moment will lead to more people booking to go out to throw some shapes on the many dancefloors across the island.' On the day the Ibiza Final Boss went viral on social media, bookings to the island rose by 48 per cent day on day - and On the Beach told of expecting a further increase as attentions turn towards closing parties. Kay's own social media following has exploded, with his TikTok account - labelled 'IBIZA FINAL BOSS' - picking up almost 20,000 followers, while a newly created Instagram has 27,000. Comments on his social media are laden with praise and offers to keep him coming back to Ibiza again and again. Travel firms have offered him holidays, while Gary Lineker's clubbing-obsessed brother Wayne - who owns club O Beach - has asked him to get in touch.

Wayne Rooney sends message to Liverpool over Alexander Isak transfer
Wayne Rooney has told Liverpool that signing Alexander Isak before the transfer deadline would make them 'unstoppable'. Liverpool's opening bid for Isak, worth £110m, was rejected by Newcastle United, who continue to insist the striker will not be sold. But Newcastle may be forced to soften their stance after Isak threatened to go on strike in order to force through a move to Liverpool. Isak is desperate to join the Premier League champions before the summer transfer window closes and is seemingly prepared to at least partly ruin his Newcastle legacy in order to force the move through. Manchester United and England legend Rooney already rates Liverpool as the 'favourites' to win the Premier League this season but says the signing of Isak would make Arne Slot's side 'unstoppable'. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. 'I already have Liverpool as the favourites to win the title this year but if Isak comes in, I think they're going to be unstoppable,' he said on BBC's Match of the Day. 'Look at the quality they've got. 'I think a big thing for Liverpool this summer was replacing Trent [Alexander-Arnold] because he created a lot of chances and goals down that side. [Jeremie] Frimpong has got the attributes to do that. 'So yeah, Liverpool look strong.' Liverpool have already spent around £250m on new signings this summer, bringing in the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Frimpong. More Trending Slot's side finished ten points clear of second-placed Arsenal last season and begin their title defence on Friday night against Bournemouth. While the temptation to join Liverpool is clear to see, Isak has handled his transfer situation 'so badly', according to ex-Newcastle boss Alan Pardew. 'The problem is, he's handled it so badly. He couldn't have handled it any worse,' Pardew told talkSPORT. 'His agents and advisors have said to him to throw down the tools after serving that great football club, and he's doing really bad things to hold them to ransom and more or less force a way out.' Glenn Hoddle names 'team to beat' in Champions League and snubs PSG
Glenn Hoddle has named the 'team to beat' in the Champions League and overlooked holders Paris Saint-Germain. PSG clinched their first ever Champions League trophy last season, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. The French champions secured more silverware on Wednesday night as they came from two goals down against Tottenham to win the UEFA Super Cup. Thomas Frank looked set for an immediate trophy at the start of his Spurs tenure after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero scored either side of half-time. But Lee Kang-in gave PSG hope with an 85th-minute goal and Goncalo Ramos' 95th-minute equaliser forced a penalty shootout. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Luis Enrique's side held their nerve in the shootout to give PSG their first Super Cup trophy and deny Spurs a second European trophy in three months. PSG also impressed in the Club World Cup over the summer – losing to Chelsea in the final – and appear to be the favourites to win the Champions League this season. Hoddle insists PSG under Enrique are a 'serious team' but views Liverpool as the 'team to beat' in Europe, especially if Arne Slot gets a couple more transfer signings over the line. The Premier League champions have spent £250m so far this summer and remain interested in big-money moves for Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi. Asked who will emerge as PSG's biggest rival for the Champions League trophy this season, Hoddle told TNT Sports: 'For me, we're all hearing the same thing about Liverpool in the transfer market. 'If those deals so happen, wow, they will have some squad. So I would say Liverpool might be the ones to beat. 'If they get who they're tying to get, I think they will go very close in Europe. They're a very good sign now, never mind about the new signings. 'PSG are a serious team though and really well-balanced. That's why they will be one of the favourites to go back and win it but in any sport, winning a title is one thing but retaining it is very, very difficult.' Ex-England star Karen Carney, meanwhile, declared Barcelona as PSG's biggest rival in the Champions League. The La Liga champions reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season before losing to Inter Milan in heartbreaking circumstances. 'Barcelona's Achilles heel was just the defensive mindset last season but going forward they had absolutely everything,' she said. 'PSG will respect that and Barcelona could push them. PSG are full of quality, they're only just come back from their summer break. 'They're the ones to beat for me. It would be great if the English teams can bridge the gap but I still have my eye on that Barcelona team because if they sort out the defence they could push these guys.' Despite watching his Tottenham team concede two late goals and then lose the penalty shootout, Frank was able to take a number of positives from the Super Cup defeat. The former Brentford boss took over at Spurs earlier in the summer after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. 'I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time,' Frank said. 'We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit. More Trending 'The team, the players, the club, the fans, there is a lot to be happy with. It is a flip of the coin when you go to a penalty shootout. 'We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. 'The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous.' Spurs face Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday while PSG begin their Ligue 1 title defence a day later against Nantes. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
