Last Updated:
Pep Guardiola in a emotional speech said he is the Gaza conflict 'hurts his whole body'.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed profound distress over the conflict in Gaza, stating it 'hurts my whole body" during a poignant speech at the University of Manchester. The 54-year-old made these remarks while receiving an honorary doctorate from the university on Monday.
'It's so painful what we see in Gaza; it hurts my whole body," Guardiola said in excerpts of his speech shared on social media. He emphasised, 'It's not about ideology or who's right or wrong. It's about the love of life and caring for your neighbour."
Guardiola cautioned, 'We might think that seeing children as young as four being killed by bombs or in hospitals is not our business. But be careful. The next victims could be our own children."
He added, 'I see my children, Maria, Marius, and Valentina, and every morning since this nightmare started, I think of the children in Gaza. I'm terrified."

Guardiola has previously expressed political views, notably supporting the campaign for Catalan independence. He received the honorary degree for his unparalleled success at Manchester City, where he has won six Premier League titles, and for his work with the Guardiola Sala Foundation, which supports disadvantaged communities through various projects.
Other members of the football community have also spoken about Gaza. In October 2023, Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah urged world leaders to 'prevent further slaughter of innocent souls". The following month, Bundesliga club Mainz dismissed Dutch winger Anwar El Ghazi, now at Cardiff, over social media posts related to the conflict.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Five stars missing from the expanded edition
Barcelona's Lamine Yamal (L) and Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo (R) will be missing from the FIFA Club World Cup. (AP/Getty Images) FIFA's inaugural expanded Club World Cup in the United States has one billion dollars of prize money on the line but will be missing some of the game's star names. AFP Sport highlights five players who will not be lighting up stadiums across the United States once it gets underway this weekend: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) File photo of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah. (Getty Images) Liverpool finished as English champions, but like Spain's Barcelona and Italy's Napoli, will not be at the Club World Cup, because of the convoluted qualification process. That means Egyptian winger Salah, who broke the Premier League record for goal involvements, with 29 strikes and 18 assists, misses out. After a tiring season in which he faded in the latter months Salah might not be too upset about having a summer off. The winger posted a photo of himself sunbathing by the beach on Instagram. However it will be a shame that African football icon Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk and others miss out on the chance of a potential rematch against their Champions League conquerors Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool transfer target Florian Wirtz will also be absent, as his side Bayer Leverkusen did not qualify. Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) Barcelona's Lamine Yamal thrilled Europe in the recent season. (Getty Images) No player in world football this season has offered more excitement than Barcelona's 17-year-old star Lamine Yamal. The Spain winger has been in sensational form for his club this season and is one of the candidates to win the Ballon d'Or. Yamal's thrilling dribbling and penchant for the spectacular make him one of the biggest draws in world football at the moment. He is often compared to former Barcelona great Lionel Messi, but because of the Spanish champions' absence, may have missed out on his only chance to face the Argentina star, who will be there with Inter Miami. Barcelona's Raphinha, midfield maestro Pedri and veteran striker Robert Lewandowski are others who will be missed. Messi will also not go up against his long-time rival Ronaldo in the US. The Portuguese striker, 40, was reported to be looking for a way to play in the tournament. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had suggested Ronaldo might move from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr to a team who had reached the event, saying that "discussions" were being held over it. Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who won the Nations League with Portugal last weekend , indicated after the game however he was set to stay at Al Nassr. "Some teams reached out to me," the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star revealed last Saturday on the eve of the Nations League final. "Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball." Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) Bukayo Saka of Arsenal in action during the Premier League. (Getty Images) Champions League semi-finalists Arsenal are another team to miss out and after finishing the season trophyless, the Club World Cup would have been a chance to win some silverware. England international Saka's only club trophy, excluding the FA Community Shield, was an FA Cup win with Arsenal in 2020. Mikel Arteta's side showed this season they have improved to the point where they are in contention for major honours, including knocking out Real Madrid in the Champions League, but came up just short. For a player of his quality, who has spent six seasons playing regularly at the top level, Saka could do with expanding his medal collection. Arsenal will be disappointed to miss out on the prize money too, as they try to overhaul Liverpool and Manchester City, who have dominated the English game in recent seasons. Neymar (Santos) File photo of Neymar in a Santos kit. (AP) Brazilian icon Neymar struggled with injury at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and returned to Santos in January 2025, hoping to get fit and firing ahead of next summer's World Cup. The 33-year-old forward, despite fading with age, is still one of the biggest names in the game and his absence is also a blow in a commercial sense. "Neymar, what can I say about him? He's an outstanding player, who, for me, in my football cycle, is in the top three, with Cristiano and Messi," said Brazil midfielder Casemiro. With organisers struggling to sell tickets, Neymar's presence would have been a boon.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Manchester City leave Jack Grealish out as Premier League club name 27-member squad
Manchester City have left out Jack Grealish from their squad for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 after the England international was not included in the 27-member travelling list announced by the Premier League club on Wednesday. The omission of Grealish was anticipated after the midfielder fell down in the pecking order at Manchester City after playing a huge role in their treble in 2023. He made just seven Premier League starts in the 2024-25 campaign and wasn't called out of the bench during Manchester City's 0-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last month. Grealish was also left out of Manchester City's match-day squad for their final Premier League game of the season at Fulham. The 29-year-old had signed for £100 million from Aston Villa four years ago. There is a growing speculation thar Grealish might leave with a number of clubs in England and in Europe showing interest in the midfielder. Just like Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne has also not been included in Manchester City's trip to the United States. The Belgian playmaker is leaving Manchester City this summer but could still have played before his contract expires on June 30. The 33-year-old looks set to join Serie A champions Napoli when he officially becomes a free agent. Meanwhile, New signings Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli are all included in Pep Guardiola's squad, which could have featured up to 35 names. There will be an opportunity to register more players for the knockout stages should Manchester City progress that far. Manchester City begin their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia next Wednesday before facing further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. Midfielder Mateo Kovacic is missing through injury, while James McAtee is on international duty with England Under-21s. Marcus Bettinelli, Stefan Ortega Moreno, Ederson, Ruben Dias, Tijjani Reijnders, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Omar Marmoush, Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, Nico Gonzalez, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Vitor Reis, Josko Gvardiol, Manuel Akanji, Savinho, Matheus Nunes, Rayan Cherki, Claudio Echeverri, Abdukodir Khusanov, Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb, Nico O'Reilly, Rico Lewis

Jack Grealish left out of Manchester City's Club World Cup squad
In what could be a move that foreshadows Jack Grealish's future at Manchester City, the club left out their 100 million pounds signing from the upcoming Club World Cup squad. City manager Pep Guardiola named a 27-member strong contingent with Grealish's name a notable omission. The England forward was a British record signing when he moved to City from Aston Villa in 2021 and went on to help the club win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a host of other trophies. But he has become an increasingly peripheral figure and made only seven league starts last season. City's squad includes four new players signed in time to take part in the month-long tournament in the United States: Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. In January, City also spent big to sign Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis as Guardiola began his overhaul of a squad that saw its dominance of English football broken by Liverpool last season. Your City travelling squad for the @FIFACWC 📋🔒#TakeItToTheWorld 🌍 — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 11, 2025 Back in January, Guardiola had said that Savinho was starting in place of Grealish because the Brazilian was in better shape than the England player. He also said Grealish has to fight for his place in the starting XI. 'Savinho is in better shape and everything than Jack, and that's why I played Savinho. Do I want the Jack that won the treble? Yeah, I want it, but I try to be honest with myself for that. They have to fight. You can say it's unfair,' Guardiola said. 'If you think that, then it's fine, but you have to prove (to me), 'Okay, I'm going to fight with Savinho, to deserve to play in that position', every single day, every single week and every single month,' the Spaniard added. But things didn't get any better for Grealish in the remaining few months of the season as he remained out of favour and City finished trophy-less for the first time in many years. City's first match at the 32-team CWC tournament is against Wydad Casablanca next Wednesday in Philadelphia. The other teams in the group are Juventus and Abu Dhabi's Al Ain. (With agency inputs)
