On Friday, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the feat on social media and noted that employment growth has outpaced working-age population. Rural areas recorded a higher decline in poverty than urban areas. The extreme poverty rate in rural areas fell to 2.8% in 2022-23 from 18.4% in 2011-12, while urban areas saw a reduction to 1.1% from 10.7% during the same period, according to the 'Poverty and Equity Brief' by the World Bank.
Five states-Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh-accounted for 65% of India's extreme poor in 2011-12. These states were also responsible for two-third of the poverty reduction by 2022-23 and now represent 54% of those living in extreme poverty.

The poverty estimates are based on the Consumption Expenditure Survey 2011-12 and the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2022-23. While the latest survey includes improvements in questionnaire design, survey implementation, and sampling, the World Bank cautioned that these changes pose challenges for making comparisons over time. It also noted underestimation of consumption inequality due to sampling and data limitations. India's Gini Index, which measures consumption-based inequality, fell to 25.5 in 2022-23 from 28.8 in 2011-12, marking an improvement.
However, the Bank warned that this may not fully reflect reality due to data limitations.

In contrast, the World Inequality Database reported a rise in income inequality, with the Index increasing to 62 in 2023 from 52 in 2004. "Wage disparity remains high, with the median earnings of the top 10 %being 13 times higher than the bottom 10% in 2023-24," the Bank mentioned.
On a positive note, employment has grown faster than the working-age population since 2021-22, according to the World Bank. The data shows a shift in the workforce: more male workers are moving from rural to urban areas, while female employment in rural agriculture is rising, it added.

World in BIG crisis! World Bank's shocking predictions about India, China…, Donald Trump's trade war to…
India's economic condition currently appears stable, but constantly evolving policies in global trade and rising questions with major partners like the United States will shape the economy's direction in the coming months. According to reports, increasing trade tensions and policy uncertainty are expected to limit global growth to just 2.3% this year, the slowest pace since 2008 (excluding global recessions). In January, the estimate was 2.7%. The World Bank has warned that if decisive action is not taken promptly, there could be a major impact on human living standards. According to the World Bank's latest Global Economic Prospects report, heightened trade tensions and policy uncertainty are expected to drive global growth down this year to its slowest pace since 2008 outside of outright global recessions. The turmoil has resulted in growth forecasts being cut in nearly 70 per cent of all economies—across all regions and income groups, it said. After unexpectedly weak growth of 6 per cent in 2024, activity in South Asia (SAR) is decelerating amid rising global trade barriers, heightened policy uncertainty, and financial market volatility, it said. World Bank On India GDP World Bank on Tuesday pegged India's economic growth projection at a lower level of 6.3 per cent for 2025-26 due to pressure on exports emanating from global uncertainties, though the country will remain the fastest growing major global economy. In April, the World Bank had lowered India's growth projection for 2025-26 to 6.3 per cent from its January forecast of 6.7 per cent. Regarding India, the report said the growth moderated in FY2024-25 (April 2024 to March 2025), partly reflecting a deceleration in industrial output growth. However, growth in construction and services activity remained steady, and agricultural output recovered from severe drought conditions, supported by resilient demand in rural areas. 'India is projected to maintain the fastest growth rate among the world's largest economies, at 6.3 per cent in FY2025-26,' it said. Nevertheless, the forecast for growth in FY2025-26 has been downgraded by 0.4 percentage point relative to January projections, with exports dampened by weaker activity in key trading partners and rising global trade barriers, the World Bank said. Last week, the Reserve Bank on India retained GDP growth projections for the current fiscal at 6.5 per cent, saying the Indian economy presents a picture of strength, stability and opportunity in the backdrop of global uncertainty. World Bank expects China to grow at 4.5 per cent in 2025 and 4 per cent next year. (With Inputs From Agencies)

AI likely to help enhance sugarcane production by 30 pc: Expert
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could bring down the need of water in sugarcane farming by 50 per cent and increase the per acre produce by nearly 30 per cent, an expert in the field said on Wednesday. Notably, a meeting was recently held in Pune in the presence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and former Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar where the use of AI in sugarcane farming was discussed. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Vasantdada Sugar Institute and Agricultural Development Trust was signed to explore ways to ensure this technology reaches as many farmers as possible. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo "Microsoft has already worked for a long time on the use of AI for sugarcane cultivation and is assuring 30 per cent growth in sugarcane production and curtailing water usage (in its farming) to half. This will help to run the sugar mills for a longer time (more than 110 days) and losses will also be less," Maharashtra State Co-Operative Sugar Factories Federation Ltd director Jayprakash Dandegaonkar told PTI. 'The 40 (23 co-operative and 17 private) sugar mills in Maharashtra which do not owe any debt to the VSI will be included in this project (of AI use in sugarcane cultivation)," he said. Live Events A group of 25 sugarcane cultivating farmers in a two-km radius will have a station ( automated AI facility ) which will report to war rooms of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the VSI, the former state minister said. An amount of Rs 25,000 may be needed initially for the cost incurred by a farmer. The war rooms will alert these farmers in a few seconds about steps to be taken during the cultivation, he said. This technology will work on forecasting, soil testing, watering alerts, limiting the use of pesticides and protecting nutrients of the soil, he added. The tonnage of sugarcane in Maharashtra has gone down, Dandegaonkar pointed out. "Due to less rainfall, the per acre production in the state has come down to 73 tonnes. The use of AI can definitely help us to reach at least 150 tonnes per acre in the near period," he said. "Farmers need to install drips in their fields for this (irrigation). We can expect the first such station (automated AI facility) installed and put into operation by August-end or the first week of September," he added.
