The two-day event, held with the support of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, minister of culture, will be themed 'The Global Lexicography Industry: Experiences, Efforts, and Prospects.'
Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, secretary-general of the academy, said that the conference would aim to foster collaboration between the academy and linguistic institutions worldwide.
It will serve as a platform for experts to share insights, review successful initiatives in lexicography, and explore ways to modernize dictionary development through emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, he added.

'Our goal is to enhance the development of dictionaries, strengthen their global impact, and reinforce Saudi Arabia's leadership in promoting the Arabic language.'
The conference will examine the latest developments in the lexicography industry and highlight major Arabic and international projects, and facilitate knowledge exchange among linguists, language academies and technology experts while exploring Artificial Intelligence-driven advances in dictionary compilation.
Representatives from more than 20 countries are expected to attend.
The event aligns with the academy's broader mission, which focuses on four key areas: Language planning and policy, linguistic computing, educational programs, and cultural initiatives. Through these efforts, the academy seeks to expand global engagement in Arabic language development and preservation.

Spiritual journey of Hajj pilgrims ends with gifts and souvenirs
MAKKAH: Throughout their profound journey of faith, especially as Hajj concludes, pilgrims commonly engage in the cherished custom of purchasing gifts. They flock to the malls and markets of Makkah, particularly those around the Grand Mosque. This tradition expresses their spiritual fulfillment and prepares them for their return home, blessed by Allah for having performed the sacred rites, according to a Saudi Press Agency report. Gift buying represents joy at Hajj's successful conclusion and strengthens social bonds between relatives, SPA added. Many gifts symbolize the holy sites and carry deep religious significance. Popular choices include Zamzam water, prayer beads, and copies of the Holy Qur'an. Pilgrims also frequently buy perfumes like incense and musk, along with various types of dates — ajwa dates being especially sought after. The markets of Makkah and Madinah see a significant boom after Hajj, bustling with pilgrims of diverse nationalities. These vibrant markets include modern malls in the Haram area, the traditional Aziziyah Market, the Hijaz Market, and bazaars near the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Merchants actively meet this demand, offering a wide range of products, special offers for pilgrims, and often discounts on bulk purchases.

Taiwan May Exports Hit Record on AI Demand and Ahead of US Tariffs
Taiwan's exports surged to a record in May on booming demand for artificial intelligence and as customers placed orders ahead of US tariffs which could take effect next month after a suspension period expires. Exports increased 38.6% from the same month a year ago - the fastest pace in almost 15 years - to $51.74 billion, a record high and the first time the value of exports has exceeded $50 billion, the finance ministry said on Monday. The expansion, the 19th consecutive monthly gain, was higher than the 25% expected by economists in a Reuters poll and surpassed April's 29.9% rise. Taiwan companies such as TSMC , the world's largest contract chipmaker, are major suppliers to Apple , Nvidia and other tech giants. May exports benefited from continued strong AI demand and customers bringing forward orders to hedge against the possibility of increased U.S. tariffs, the ministry said in a statement. US President Donald Trump planned a 32% import levy on goods from Taiwan under his global tariff regime, until he announced a 90-day pause in April to allow for trade negotiations. While AI and other new technologies should continue to support Taiwan's exports, the uncertainty surrounding the US tariffs and geopolitical risks could undermine the global economic outlook, the ministry said. For June, the ministry expects exports to rise between 15% and 25% year-on-year. In May, Taiwan's exports to the United States soared 87.4% year-on-year to $15.52 billion, a record in terms of growth and value, versus a 29.5% surge in the prior month. Exports to China, Taiwan's biggest trading partner, climbed 16.6%, after rising 22.3% in April. Taiwan's total exports of electronic components gained 28.4% in May on the year to $17.2 billion, with semiconductor exports up 30.1%. Imports rose 25% to $39.13 billion, lower than economists' forecasts of 30.2%.

Saudi Arabia, Syria Explore Investment Cooperation
Saudi Arabia and Syria have explored avenues for investment cooperation in both countries, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). On Wednesday, the Saudi Minister of Investment, Khalid Al-Falih, held a virtual meeting with the Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry, Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar, to discuss avenues for joint investment cooperation and explore the promising economic opportunities in the Syrian market. During the meeting, the two ministers discussed potential areas for public-private partnership and ways to strengthen targeted investments in the productive and service sectors, with the aim of supporting economic development and opening new channels for integration between Saudi Arabia and Syria. On his part, Al-Falih emphasized the importance of fostering an enabling environment for expanding regional investment partnerships. He also reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's commitment to supporting the stability and growth of Syria's economy in a way that benefits the mutual interests of both countries and promotes regional economic prosperity. Most recently, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, headed a high-level economic delegation to Syria, where he met with the Syrian Transitional President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in Damascus. They discussed avenues for joint cooperation aimed at supporting Syria's economy, enhancing the development of its governmental institutions, and fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people. The discussions yielded in the announcement of a Saudi-Qatari joint financial support package for Syrian public sector employees for three months. 'This support aims to contribute to economic and social stability, improve living conditions, and reinforce development efforts in Syria,' Saudi Arabia and Qatar said in a joint statement. In April 2025, Saudi Arabia and Qatar had committed to settling Syria's outstanding arrears to the World Bank Group, which is around $15 million, in order to support and accelerate the recovery of Syria's economy.
