IT-BT dept hosts Global Collaboration Meet ahead of BTS 2025
The meet was convened to further strengthen cross-border collaboration in the lead-up to BTS 2025, scheduled to take place from 18–20 November at BIEC, Bengaluru.

'This year we host the 28th edition of BTS, for the first time at the world-class Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. I warmly encourage all our GIA partner countries to make the most of this opportunity by bringing strong participation of country delegations, hosting national pavilions in the exhibition and curating country-focused sessions in the Global Convergence conference track,' said Ekroop Caur, Secretary to Government, Department of Electronics, IT & BT, and S&T.
Beyond Bengaluru
According to Ms. Caur, clusters outside Bengaluru including Mysuru, Dharwad, Belagavi, Hubballi and Mangaluru also have been receiving significant traction from foreign countries.
Talking about the visit of a delegation from New Jersey to Mysuru, she said, 'We have done a Letter of Intent last year with them and we will be in due course doing an MOU. They are very keen on looking at Mysuru as one of the potential destinations. Similarly, there have been other engagements. We also do three events in each of the clusters as a run-up to BTS. All the three events do see a significant number of countries participating.'
She also revealed that Innoverse, a deep tech incubator announced by the government at BTS 2024, will soon start physically incubating startups at the facility, which is in works at NGEF Layout, Indira Nagar.
Growing in size
The tech summit this year is expected to see more than 1,00,000 attendees, including startup founders, investors, delegates, speakers, and exhibitors. It will feature 10 tracks including IT & DeepTech, Electro-Semicon, Digital Health & Biotech, the Startup Ecosystem, Global Collaboration and India- USA Tech Conclave, AI Universe, Finverse, Defence & Spacetech and My Planet My Future, which focuses on sustainability and climate tech.
A major highlight will be the 'Future Makers Conclave', an immersive programme to be attended by more than 2000 startup founders. Special programmes like the Rural IT Quiz, Bio Quiz, Bio Posters, IT, Bio and Exhibitor awards, and Global Leaders Reception will also be part of the summit.

WhatsApp cracks down on harmful behaviour, bans over 98 lakh accounts in India this June
WhatsApp removed more than 98 lakh accounts in India during the month of June as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle misuse and harmful behaviour on the platform, according to the company's latest compliance report. The Meta-owned messaging service disclosed that around 19.79 lakh of these accounts were banned proactively, without waiting for user reports, based on internal abuse detection mechanisms. Published in line with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the June report outlines actions taken by WhatsApp to curb violations originating from India. The platform received a total of 23,596 user complaints during the period, with action taken against 1,001 accounts. These actions included banning accounts or reversing previous bans following a review. Out of the total complaints, 16,069 were appeals related to account bans. Following assessments, action was taken on 756 of these cases. The remaining complaints spanned categories such as account assistance, safety-related concerns, and product feedback. WhatsApp emphasised that it considers it more effective to prevent harmful behaviour in advance rather than respond after the fact. The platform's abuse detection systems operate at multiple levels, during account registration, while messages are being sent, and in response to user feedback or behavioural patterns flagged internally. Meanwhile, in other news, Italy's antitrust regulator has launched a formal investigation into Meta Platforms over claims that it misused its market dominance by integrating its artificial intelligence tool into WhatsApp without securing user consent. The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) announced last week that the probe focuses on potential breaches of European Union competition laws. It alleges that Meta's integration of its AI assistant into WhatsApp, introduced in March 2025, may have disadvantaged rival services by directing users toward its own tools. According to the regulator, the Meta AI assistant was embedded into WhatsApp's search bar, effectively introducing a new service within an existing one. The AGCM raised concerns that this move may have compelled users to interact with Meta's AI by default, undermining fair competition and limiting consumer choice.

CM Siddaramaiah, Dy CM DK Shivakumar invite global investors to Karnataka
BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday invited global industry leaders to invest in Karnataka. They were speaking in New Delhi at the high- level diplomatic dialogue 'Bridge to Bengaluru', aimed at strengthening international collaboration in innovation, technology and investment ahead of Karnataka's flagship technology event, Bengaluru Tech Summit 2025, scheduled to be held from November 18 and 20 at BIEC in Bengaluru. Siddaramaiah said that Karnataka has sectoral policies across ESDM, AVGC, green hydrogen, tourism, electric mobility and renewables which are designed to create a robust ecosystem for responsible and resilient growth. 'Karnataka welcomes the world not just as investors but as partners. We believe global relationships are built on shared trust, common goals, and mutual benefit. Whether it is through technology, tourism, trade, or talent, we see global engagement not as an option, but as a pathway to shared progress,' he said. Shivakumar said, 'Bengaluru's strength lies not just in its infrastructure or policy incentives, it lies in its people. No need for Karnataka to give land for cheap to IT firms: Priyank Kharge
Karnataka does not need to give away land for cheap to attract IT and technology industry firms as the State 'incentivised IT as a sunrise industry 30 years back,' while others are 'incentivising it now,' the State's Minister for Electronics, Information Technology & Biotechnology and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge told The Hindu in an interview. Mr. Kharge was speaking at the sidelines of an event in the capital to promote the Bengaluru Tech Summit, due to be held in November. 'If my counterpart in another State is giving large tracts of land for free, that doesn't mean that I need to do that too,' Mr. Kharge said, arguing that due to Karnataka and particularly Bengaluru's strong presence in the IT sector, such sops were not needed. Interstate competition 'Competition with other countries and States [in IT and electronics] has always been there,' Mr. Kharge said. 'We compete with Tamil Nadu on manufacturing, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on ITES, and Maharashtra for FDI. We're also extremely competitive with countries like Indonesia and Vietnam, where there is potential for smaller hubs of manufacturing and technology firms. This constant competition is what keeps us ahead of the curve for reskilling, pushing for better policies, and better infrastructure.' On the 1,777 acres of land in Devanahalli that was earmarked for an aerospace park, Mr. Kharge said that the land had never been concretely notified for any particular industry or company. 'That land was fertile and there were negotiations, and look, this is a democracy, right,' Mr. Kharge said. 'You come up and say, there was a mistake in the notification, and we don't want to give [the land] now as it's fertile. It's a socio-economic demographic that we have to cater to, so so be it.' 'This is not like what happened in West Bengal two decades back, where land was returned after its notification to a particular entity. That sent a wrong signal to investors.' IT layoffs On job losses at some IT firms recently, Mr. Kharge alluded to AI as a cause. 'Whenever a new technology comes in, there is going to be a lot of disruption,' Mr. Kharge said. 'It's always been a constant thing. Jobs are taken, new jobs are created… And I think we have been extremely agile with that. That is the reason we are coming up with the Nipuna Karnataka programme, for heavy reskilling and upskilling. No other State is spending what we are, ₹300-400 crores on such an effort.' On the role of non-Kannadigas in the State's talent pool, Mr. Kharge said: 'My responsibility as minister is to work for a policy that pushes the ecosystem in my State, it's my responsibility to ensure that more of our people are given opportunities. Having said that, because of the great ecosystem that we have, the conducive environment for investments and job creation, we do get a lot of influx of migrants. There's nothing we can do about it — the only way to ensure that we stay ahead of the curve is by reskilling and upskilling people.' 'So the migration influx issue is one of the things we've requested the Sixteenth Finance Commission to consider: give us money, we build better infrastructure, we create more jobs for people across not only Karnataka, but for people across India.'
