As temperatures in Nepal rise, highly venomous snakes are slithering up to higher altitudes

IN the past one and a half months, 10 highly venomous snakes typically found in warmer climates – nine King Cobras and a Monocled Cobra – have been rescued from various locations in the Kathmandu Valley.
Both the snake species, common in Tarai districts, especially in the summer season, have now started to appear in the supposedly cooler hilly and mountainous areas as well.
'Locals have also found King Cobra eggs and nests in nearby jungles,' said Jaya Thapa Magar, chair of the municipality's ward.
What worries experts is that these venomous snakes are not only starting to slither into hill and mountain areas but are also adapting and settling in the regions. Global warming might be behind the phenomenon, they say.
Nepal is one of the countries most vulnerable to the climate crisis and has witnessed extreme weather events over the past decade and a half.
Evidence indicates that the maximum temperature in Nepal is rising at a greater rate (0.05°C per year) than the minimum temperature (0.03°C per year). Meterologists said that compared to the districts of the Tarai region, hilly and mountainous districts have been witnessing a faster rise in maximum temperatures.
Subodh Acharya, a snake rescue trainer from Mithila Wildlife Trust said that some of the tropical venemous snakes might have come to the Valley with the logs and hay in trucks and made their habitats there.
Acharya, who rescued all the venomous snakes – king cobras and monocled cobras – said that people should be cautious while they are in forests, as rescued venomous snakes have been released there.
Incidents of snakebite and resulting deaths are common in Tarai districts in southern Nepal during the summer.
Each year, around 2,700 people, mostly children and women from Nepal's Tarai region, die of snakebites, according to a March 2022 report published in The Lancet, a leading international medical journal.
However, snakebite cases are vastly underreported in the country.
The government has committed to reducing 50% of deaths and disabilities through snakebite envenomation by 2030, the national target aligned with the World Health Organisation's 'Snakebite Roadmap'.
Herpetologists and public health experts emphasise the urgency of raising awareness and training local health workers to meet this crucial health goal. Experts say authorities must also strengthen health infrastructures to achieve the target.
Meanwhile, many people in rural areas lack awareness and often consult shamans instead of physicians when they are bitten by a snake.
Doctors say women who go to the fields to collect fodder, farmers working in plantations or during harvest, and children who play in open areas are more vulnerable to snakebites.
Poor people living in thatched-roof houses are also highly vulnerable to snakebite, as snakes visit such homes in search of rats, their food.
Experts say there should be a greater awareness drive on keeping homes and surroundings clean, preventing children from playing in bushes, and avoiding walking outside at night. If absolutely necessary, people must use torchlights when walking in the dark.
The Health and Population Ministry said that it has expanded treatment centres to around a dozen places in the hilly regions to address the growing number of venomous snakebite cases.
Officials say they have already stockpiled the anti-snake venom and supplied it to treatment centres.
Nepal imports quadrivalent antivenom from India, which is effective against four common species of snakes found in India: the common cobra, common krait, saw-scaled viper, and Russell's viper. The saw-scaled viper has not yet been found in Nepal.
Deaths from pit viper bites in the hills and mountainous regions have also risen recently. However, the antivenom made for other venomous snakes does not treat pit viper bites. — The Kathmandu Post/ANN

Verdict: TRUE On the island of Java, Indonesia, there is, indeed, a still-active volcano spewing blue lava - Kawah Ijen volcano. But, the intense electric colour that is so attractive is actually a sulphur bomb. Photographer Olivier Grunewald has documented the Kawah Ijen volcano, where electric-blue flames stream down its slopes at night. Explaining the glow, Grunewald said gases emerge from cracks in the volcano at high pressure and temperatures of up to 600°C. Upon contact with air, they ignite, creating flames up to 16 feet high. Some gases condense into liquid sulfur, burning as they flow down, mimicking lava. The spectacle, however, is only visible at night, as it is obscured by sunlight during the day. But wait, that isn't all there is to the volcanic marvel. Beyond its blue flames, Kawah Ijen is also renowned for its acidic crater lake - with a diameter of 1km and a depth of approximately 200m. AI-powered textbooks are now not official South Korean textbooks, removing the legal and financial grounds for using them in schools. -- ST PHOTO: CHANG MAY CHOON SEOUL (The Korea Herald/ANN): South Korea's National Assembly passed a Bill on Monday (Aug 4) stripping artificial intelligence-powered digital textbooks of their legal status as official teaching materials, dealing a heavy blow to the previous Yoon Suk Yeol administration's flagship education reform project. The amendment narrows the legal definition of textbooks to printed books and e-books, excluding 'learning support software using intelligent information technology'. This reclassifies AI-powered textbooks as just another type of educational material, not official textbooks. The new classification takes effect immediately upon promulgation, effectively removing the legal and financial foundations for using AI digital textbooks in schools. The amendment, drafted and passed unilaterally by the ruling Democratic Party of Korea, is an updated version of the same legislation passed by the Assembly in 2024, which was ultimately scrapped after it was vetoed by then-deputy prime minister Choi Sang-mok, who was the country's acting president at the time. Initially launched as a flagship initiative of the Yoon administration, AI textbooks aimed to provide personalised learning experiences for students using advanced AI algorithms. At least 533.3 billion won (S$496 million) was allocated to the project in 2024 alone. The textbooks were piloted in the first semester of 2025 for English and mathematics classes in Grade 3 and Grade 4 of elementary school, and for English, mathematics, and computer science classes in middle and high schools. Despite the ambitious roll-out, the initiative faced widespread backlash from educators and parents, many of whom criticised the South Korean government for pushing the policy through without sufficient groundwork. In response, the South Korean Ministry of Education shifted to a school-by-school voluntary adoption model, after initially planning a nationwide mandate. Currently, the adoption rate of AI textbooks across schools hovers at around 30 per cent. The Bill's passage now leaves these schools without financial support for AI textbook subscriptions. A high school computer science teacher told The Korea Herald that although some schools secured subscription budgets for the second semester, future use is uncertain. 'Unless the textbooks retain their legal status, we won't be able to receive the necessary funding. It's now almost impossible to use them in class,' the teacher said. The publishing industry is also facing a looming crisis. Companies that invested heavily in AI textbook development, expecting the government to mandate their use, now say they are on the verge of collapse. Several companies filed an administrative lawsuit against the South Korean Education Ministry in April, citing losses due to low adoption rates and policy flip-flopping. Industry representatives warn that without the legal textbook designation, usage rates could drop further, jeopardising the estimated 800 billion won in total investments made into AI textbooks. Layoffs and restructuring are now expected across the sector. A worker in her 30s from a major textbook publisher said her department may soon disappear. 'Many companies hired researchers and engineers to develop AI textbooks. Now, with education policy changing depending on who holds political power, we risk not only losing our jobs but also degrading the quality of education itself,' she said. Publishers have been staging a last-ditch push to reverse public sentiment and policy. Fourteen publishing companies have taken turns holding solo protests outside the National Assembly, while others have visited the Democratic Party of Korea's headquarters demanding reconsideration of the Bill. The South Korean Education Ministry has yet to present a concrete roadmap for winding down the AI textbook programme. BANGKOK: A dazzling green light, identified as an exceptionally large "fireball," startled residents across several Thai provinces in the early hours of Monday, 4th August. The Thai Astronomical Society has confirmed the celestial event, suggesting the meteoroid's striking green hue could indicate the presence of nickel. The spectacle, which reportedly included a loud accompanying explosion, captivated onlookers as it streaked across the night sky. Investigations by the Thai Astronomical Society point to the object being a fireball meteoroid, a phenomenon occurring when celestial bodies enter Earth's atmosphere. Generally, meteors are observed when small space objects encounter atmospheric friction at altitudes of approximately 80-120 kilometres, burning up and creating a luminous trail. The intensity of the light produced is directly proportional to the object's size. Footage and images widely circulated on social media depict this particular meteor as remarkably large and bright, with a luminosity described as comparable to that of Venus, thus unequivocally classifying it as a fireball. The distinct green light observed is a key indicator, potentially signifying the meteor's metallic composition, specifically nickel. The vibrant colours of meteors are determined by a combination of factors, including the chemical composition of the rock fragments and dust originating from comets or asteroids, and the surrounding air molecules in the atmosphere. These objects enter Earth's atmosphere at incredibly high velocities, and the intense friction and combustion cause their constituent atoms to emit light across various wavelengths, resulting in the diverse spectrum of colours witnessed. While large numbers of small space objects enter Earth's atmosphere daily, and meteor-like phenomena are routinely observed, this event stands out due to its size and unusual colouration. An estimated 44 to 48.5 tonnes of meteoritic material falls to Earth every day; however, most land in remote areas, meaning discoveries of actual meteorites are rare.
