New ownership aims to enhance the tournament experience and solidify its standing as a premier golf event in Palm Beach County.
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Officials from the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches are confident the event's relationship with PGA National will remain strong despite the resort's change in ownership.
London-based private equity firm Henderson Park recently purchased PGA National Resort & Spa. Although the release announcing the deal did not include a dollar figure, it was previously reported the resort, golf club and residential community could sell for an estimated $425 million.
With the deal, Henderson Park assumes the contract with the PGA Tour that has the Cognizant Classic at PGA National through 2028. Todd Fleming, executive director of the Cognizant Classic, said discussions already have begun on extending that deal.
"There's a mutual respect and admiration for each other and there's a mutual intensity and energy to make sure this continues for the foreseeable future," Fleming said. "2028 is a contract date but the relationship is going to be built even stronger over the next several years. We'll figure out where we can extend it."
The 2025 tournament is scheduled for Feb. 27-March 2.
PGA National was purchased in a joint venture with luxury boutique hotel brand Salamander Hotels and investment manager South Street Partners. According to Forbes, South Street is involved in several prominent golf communities, including the Kiawah Island Club and Palmetto Bluff and The Cliffs in South Carolina; King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia; and the Naples Grande Beach Resort.
Fleming believes this can only enhance PGA National's golf footprint, which includes six courses. Among those is the Champion Course, where Cognizant is played.
"We're going to be able to have a scale to what is actually working from a fan standpoint, what's working from a resort standpoint and how to start to share ideas and steal ideas from each other to continue to make sure the event is one of the best on the Tour," Fleming said.
Joseph Fisher, Managing Director at PGA National Resort, said the relationship between the resort and Cognizant will remain strong.
"We have a great contract with the PGA Tour and the Cognizant Classic," Fisher said. "Our goal with the new ownership is to enhance the experience and support it and make it the best golf event we have in Palm Beach County."
Cognizant's contract with the Tour as the title sponsor of the event runs through 2030.

The PGA Tour comes to a conclusion this week at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, GA, and there are rumors the host site could be changing. East Lake has hosted the Tour Championship since 2004, when its primary sponsor, Coca-Cola, urged the Tour to move away from its previous rotating site, Champions Golf Club in Houston, TX. Since its inception in 1987, the Tour Championship has been held at eight venues, including Pinehurst No. 2, The Olympic Club, Pebble Beach, Oak Hill, Harbour Town, and Southern Hills. 'It's been discussed,' said Adam Scott, a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board. 'We've questioned everything at some point. I couldn't tell you contractually how long we're tied there, but East Lake is where it's at.' Title sponsors of the PGA Tour Playoff series may have influenced the location decisions. FedEx, headquartered in Memphis, TN and sponsor of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, helped turn what was once a rotating event into a fixed one. Previously, the Westchester Classic (later known as The Barclays) was held at Westchester Country Club in New York from 1967 to 2007 before rotating between venues along the East Coast. The BMW Championship, formerly the Western Open, also provides a case study. For decades, the event was tied to Chicago: played at Butler National from 1974 to 1990 and then at Cog Hill from 1991 to 2006. Its proximity to the Western Golf Association's headquarters played a major role. A rebrand and new title sponsor later, the BMW Championship became a rotating event, ironically no longer confined to the 'West.' 'I don't hear fans say it is an exciting golf course to watch golf,' professional golfer Peter Malnati said of East Lake. 'I know it does a lot for the community and that's very important, but I think it would be cool for our biggest trophy to be given away at a course that really excites fans. But there are a lot of things that have to be done in the right way to make that happen. I think East Lake works really hard to be an amazing host. I'd love to see our fans be excited about where we play the Tour Championship in addition to the tournament itself.' The current contract with East Lake Golf Club ends in 2027. With the BMW Championship already rotating and frequent player feedback about the heat and humidity in Georgia in August, the Tour Championship could be next to move. SSG, with its $1.5 billion investment into the PGA Tour, might consider adding another stop in its headquarters city, Orlando, FL, though that too would be another steamy summer site. Jason Day has voiced support for rotating playoff venues, starting with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, where he struggles at TPC Southwind. 'I'm like, when can we leave?' Day said. 'But I definitely think we should move around a bit, yeah, for sure.' Several major metropolitan areas in the U.S. currently lack regular PGA Tour stops but could provide fresh tests if the playoff events rotated. Cities like Chicago, Denver, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, and Portland could all offer championship caliber venues. Cooler climates in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest would also give players a more comfortable environment to compete in. Normal Tour venues must have facilities for fields of around 150 players, but the reduced playoff fields require less dining, practice, and locker space. However, infrastructure for media, grandstands, and broadcast technology will still be critical factors in venue selection. With East Lake's contract expiring, a new investor in the mix, and shifting sponsor priorities, both the Tour Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship could soon be on the move.

Russell Henley rode a hot putter to a nine-under par 61 and a two-shot lead over top-ranked Scottie Scheffler on Thursday at the US PGA Tour Championship, where a star-studded field is chasing a $10 million top prize. Henley, the world number four who captured his fifth PGA title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, broke free atop a crowded leaderboard with three birdies to close his round at East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia. The American had made a strong start with two birdies and an eagle on the front nine, adding back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 before he drained a 42-foot birdie at 16 to launch his closing burst. He added a 34-foot birdie at 17 and got up and down from a greenside bunker for birdie at the par-five 18th. His 207 total feet of putts made included three from beyond 30 feet. "I putted as good as I can putt," Henley said. "I felt like I was clear on my reads. Last week I felt like I played really well and didn't give myself a bunch of looks because I couldn't figure out how far the ball was going and struggled a little bit on the looks of those greens. "(Today) just felt a little more clear in my mind on what I thought the ball was going to do ... just kind of free-wheeled it a little bit." He walked off the 18th green with a three-shot lead but Scheffler -- who has won five times in his last 10 starts and nabbed major titles at the PGA Championship and British Open this year -- closed with back-to-back birdies in a bogey-free seven-under par 63. He was a stroke in front of five players sharing third on six-under 64. "I hit some fairways and I holed some nice putts as well," said Scheffler, who got his round going with birdies at the second and third and added another at the sixth. Unhappy with his approach at the 10th he nevertheless rolled in a 27-foot birdie putt, and after a birdie at 15 managed to get up and down for par from the dangerous right rough below the elevated green at 16. "I knew going down there right of 16 was a huge penalty," Scheffler said. "We had talked about it in the practice rounds, and our job was just to get the ball back on the green, which I did, and it was nice to hole that long putt." He drilled another 27-foot birdie at 17, then blasted out of a greenside bunker to four feet at 18 and made that putt for solo second moments before approaching thunderstorms would have halted play. - Unlikely McIlroy birdie - Two-time major winners Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa were in the tie for third on 64 alongside fellow American Patrick Cantlay, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and England's Tommy Fleetwood. Thomas was in the lead at seven-under through 15 holes, but made a double bogey at 16, where his chip from the right greenside rough failed to reach the green. Scheffler, the defending FedEx Cup champion, topped the standings heading into the three playoff events and further solidified that spot with a victory at the penultimate event, the BMW Championship, last week. Last year Scheffler's position atop the points list meant he started the Tour Championship at 10-under and with a two-stroke advantage over the number two on the list. This year, all 30 players who made the finale started even with the winner to collect $10 million. Masters champion Rory McIlroy, second in the standings coming in, carded a four-under par 66 that included an 30-foot eagle at the sixth and an unlikely birdie at 18, where his shot out of a greenside bunker flew the green, hit the grandstand and bounced back onto the putting surface to leave him a 17-foot putt. bb/st
