His carefree attitude has helped endear himself to fans but Richards believes it is all an act, and Gary Lineker agrees.
The pair discussed Palmer on The Rest is Football podcast after finding his interaction with incoming Chelsea star Estevao amusing.
Palmer revealed he told the Palmeiras player that he was looking forward to welcoming him to Stamford Bridge, before acknowledging the fact the Brazilian probably did not understand what he was saying.
Lineker said of the England international: "There's something about Cole Palmer.

"You used to think 'oh maybe he is a bit dim' but he is actually not. He's clever.
"He comes across very likeable. He is so matter-of-fact in his answers that he actually speaks as he thinks.
Richards agreed with his colleague, adding: "Very clever. He knows what he is doing. He is very witty.
"He's like Grealish. They pretend they are stupid but they are really not.

"They know exactly what they are doing. Cole Palmer is exactly the same."
Just last week Palmer, 23, left fans speechless after starring in a new advert for Nike.

Winger Estevao and Palmer are tipped to be the faces of Chelsea's future and the pair shared a brief embrace after the game with cameras catching the moment Palmer tried to strike up a conversation.
Despite the language barrier the light-hearted moment highlights the warm welcome Chelsea's current stars are ready to offer the Brazilian wonderkid when he arrives for pre-season.

His official death certificate, under the cause of death section, lists 'acute myocardial infarction' and 'out of hospital cardiac arrest'. It also listed coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease with autonomic dysfunction as "joint causes" of Ozzy's death. Ozzy's tragic passing comes just weeks after his final performance in his home town - where it all began. He finished his performance with Crazy Train, before confetti rained over a packed Villa Park. After a short break, Ozzy re-entered the stage to join the rest of Black Sabbath for the first time in 20 years. The band performed some of their greatest hits, ending with a rendition of Paranoid. Stars at the service included Ozzy's Black Sabbath bandmates, Metallica's James Hetfield, punk singer Yungblud and Sir Elton John. Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RIO NGUMOHA will be hoping to light up Liverpool's season - after shining in pre-season. The Reds youngster is only 16 but has played a key role in Arne Slot's preparations for the new campaign, including a stunning solo goal on Monday. By the fifth, he had added an assist, too, by nodding a header down for Darwin Nunez before being subbed off to a standing ovation in the second half. Liverpool poached teenage winger Ngumoha, who turns 17 on August 29, from Chelsea. The Reds were impressed by his goalscoring performance in the U17 Premier League Cup final win against Wolves in April 2024 - and the Blues could not stop his move to Merseyside. Angry Chelsea responded by blocking Liverpool scouts from attending Chelsea youth matches. John Terry wrote at the time: 'This boy is and will be a top player.' He became the second-youngest starter in Liverpool history aged 16 years and 135 days when they played Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup in January. Now after his superb pre-season, the former Chelsea academy star could feature in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday - then make his Premier League debut. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Nguhoma expressed his belief he can 'win the Ballon d'Or one day' before even making a senior appearance when he boldly declared: "I want to be regarded as one of the best players to ever play football and be a legend of the game.' But while the England youth star has a long way to go to realise those dreams, team-mate Andy Robertson is confident the kid will be a nightmare for Premier League full-backs. Charlie Patino opens up on Max Dowman and his own journey from Arsenal wonderkid to Deportivo Robertson told The Anfield Wrap: 'He's not bad, is he? 'He's a good kid as well and he's got a fantastic head on his shoulders. Especially when he's got people like Mo [Salah] who can help him so much. 'Obviously that's the last two games now I've played with Rio in front of me and he just keeps on coming on and he's got a hell of a future ahead of him but the here and now looks pretty good as well.' Gary Gillespie added to LFC TV: 'He is such an excellent prospect. The difficulty is managing expectations but it's hard to put a lid on it." And Slot beamed: "Rio is showing things every time in pre-season." But Ngumoha is not the only English teenager hoping to make their mark on the Premier League this season… Trey Nyoni, 18 - Liverpool Ngumoha's team-mate Nyoni held the previous record for Liverpool's youngest FA Cup player - and is club's youngest player in European football. STATSports managing director Paul McKernan told The Telegraph: "You can make decisions on the players based on data you see in front of you. "Not waiting until after the session and downloading the data and saying 'I wish Mason Mount had run a little bit further or done a few more sprints, or actually he did too much today."
