Brian Wilson's musical imagination was truly oceanic
On Nov. 16, 1966 — six months to the day after the Beach Boys released 'Pet Sounds,' strangely enough — Jorge Luis Borges was lecturing on English literature at the University of Buenos Aires, marveling over the fact that Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote his epic seafaring poem 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' before he had ever set eyes on the ocean. 'The sea of his imagination,' Borges said, 'was vaster than the real one.' He could have just as easily been talking about Brian Wilson, a songwriting giant who helped pen the likes of 'Surfin' Safari,' 'Surfin' U.S.A.,' and 'Surfer Girl' without ever having learned how to drop in on a wave.

This JBL PartyBox Club 120 Speaker Is Cheaper Than Last Prime Day, No Need to Wait for Upcoming Sales
We can all agree that Summer is here, right? Sure, it might not be the kind of Summer we're all excited about, but the season of long days, BBQs, and big old get-togethers is upon us. It's just nice to get outdoors and spend time with friends and family, and one key part of all of these things is music. That's where this JBL PartyBox Club 120 portable party speaker comes in, and it's currently $100 off on Amazon. This thing is an excellent way to boost the vibes at any party, no matter where you are or who you're with. Music is the way to set basically any mood, and this speaker is one of the easiest ways to do that indoors, outdoors, or if you're in a secret third space. See at Amazon Get That Music Pumping The most obvious thing to note here is the sound itself. The speaker packs in 5.25-inch woofers and 2.25-inch tweeters to allow it to output excellent sound with a decent range and a good mix of highs and lows. You'll be able to pump the bass as needed, but also enjoy more chilled-out music, if that's what you're after. It helps better the general atmosphere with a visual display too, and can manage a few different lighting effects, all of which can sync to the music it's playing, which helps really cement the immersion. It's portable too, which is great because it means you can carry it around using the foldaway handle, and then just plonk it down wherever you feel like. The battery life is pretty spectacular as well, as it can last up to 12 hours on a single charge, and if you're in a rush, a 10-minute fast charge can still get you an extra 80 minutes of playback. That's great for those who often forget to prepare for things ahead of time. It's splash proof too, with an IPX4 rating, which means that a little bit of rain, a little bit of tide, or a little bit of pool party won't ruin your fun. The cherry on top is that it has dual mic and guitar inputs, which means that if you or your friends are really talented, or in a state where you're feeling like you are, you can hook into this thing and sing or play along. The speaker can't make you sound better, but you'll probably have fun with it all, so who cares? Plus, with it being $100 off, and only $300 as a result, it's a great investment for your good times. 11 essential Brian Wilson songs, from surf rock to ‘Pet Sounds'
If you enjoy most any kind of pop music, you're a cork in Brian Wilson's ocean. The principal songwriter and sonic architect of the Beach Boys, he bottled the vibes of Southern California — and really, the American optimism of the early 1960s — in dozens of hits (many of which contain the word 'surf') before creating what is by broad consensus one of the great rock records of his or any era, 'Pet Sounds.' No one needs an introduction to this catalogue; it remains encoded in music's DNA. But we have some favorites. Don't you?
