Can a higher ethanol blend negatively impact petrol prices?

Hindustan Times2 days ago
Having achieved its 20% ethanol blending targets five years prior to its deadline, it's safe to say that biofuel is to play a key role in the central government's plan to reduce crude oil dependence. It's a win-win for both the government and the agricultural sector, which can now utilise excess sugar for ethanol production. Ethanol is basically ethyl alcohol that is made from molasses, grains and farm waste. (Representational image/REUTERS)
With the exception of Delhi, petrol prices range between ₹100 - ₹104.2 per litre. Earlier this year, the per-litre price of ethanol increased by ₹1.69, bringing the total ex-mill cost of ethanol produced for the purposes of blending with petrol to ₹57.97. Given that ethanol is a little over half the price of petrol, the 20% blend, which was achieved earlier this year, should theoretically be accompanied by a marginal drop in petrol prices. In 2021, a 20% blend was projected to reduce petrol prices by ₹8/litre, according to a report by CNBC TV18. That hasn't turned out to be the case.

In India, retail fuel prices are determined by international crude oil prices and the existing tax structure imposed by states via excise and VAT. While there has been no major fluctuation in VAT in the last couple of years, excise duty did go up in April, although the cost was not passed on to the customers, according to a report by Reuters. However, the benefit of the lower cost of production of ethanol has also not been passed down to the customers. In fact, it has indirectly added to the running cost of a petrol vehicle as ethanol burns much faster than petrol and isn't as energy efficient.
Translation: lower mileage. You have to buy a lot more blended petrol in order to go the same distance as you would without unblended petrol. The prices also depend on just how the ethanol is produced. According to a report by the Centre of Social and Economic Progress, ethanol derived from B-Heavy Mollases, Sugarcane juice, sugar, sugar syrup, and damaged food grains brings the ex-mill price range up to ₹60 - ₹65.6. Add transportation charges and a 5% flat GST charge per litre, and the weighted average comes down to ₹65.35/litre of ethanol. Theoretically, then, the average price of petrol should be around ₹95/litre, which is only available in Delhi at the moment.

The report goes on to claim there is enough evidence to suggest that the Ethanol Blend Petrol Programme has played a key role in reducing crude oil imports, saving foreign exchange and generating domestic revenue. However, no cost benefit has been passed down to the customer. With the government working to meet an E27 target ( a 27-30% ethanol blend by 2030) there's no evidence to suggest that the consumer will benefit at all. In fact, as it stands, the move is costing the petrol car consumer due to lower mileage and wear and tear caused by the corrosive nature of ethanol.
How do E10 compatible vehicles respond to E20 fuel?
All cars sold in India post April 2020 are BSVI compliant which means they've been modified to accommodate a higher ethanol blend without sustaining any corrosive damage that ethanol causes. This means the cars must feature modifications such as ethanol-resistant fuel system components, hoses and a recalibration of the ECU. However, there's a catch. All cars in India that were purchased prior to April 2023 are only E10 compliant. That is before we take into account the multitude of vehicles purchased before 2020, that aren't ethanol-compatible at all. But even running E20 fuel in a vehicle designed for E10 fuel can hamper the mileage, fuel system damage (which can potentially lead to fuel leakage, reduced engine performance and even a phenomenon known as 'engine knocking' – abnormal combustion where fuel ignites prematurely, causing metallic pinging sounds and potential damage to engine components. In extremely cold temperatures, this can also lead to starting troubles.

Why is TCS letting go of 12,000 of its employees? Is AI the reason?

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced that it would reduce its global workforce by approximately two per cent, a move that will affect over 12,000 employees, primarily at the middle and senior levels, over the next year. The IT giant said the decision is part of a broader strategy to make TCS 'more agile and future-ready' read more Tata Consultancy Services, one of India's biggest IT companies, has decided to axe 2 per cent of its global workforce, impacting about 12,000 jobs in the financial year 2025-26, the company announced on Sunday. This marks one of the biggest workforce shakeups in the company's history. Those affected include a large number of mid-to-senior-level professionals, although some junior-level staff have also been impacted, especially those who have been on the bench for an extended period. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD TCS chief executive officer and managing director K Krithivasan called the decision a hard but necessary reckoning. The development has left many wondering, why is the IT behemoth known for its stability among most Indians, suddenly letting go of thousands? Is this just about performance, or is the rise of artificial intelligence playing a role? Here's what we know. Why is TCS firing 12,000 employees? According to Reuters, TCS, the most profitable company in the Tata Group, is going through a major restructuring phase as it expands into new markets, adopts fresh technologies, and leans into AI integration. As part of this shift, around 12,200 employees will lose their jobs, even as the company insists it's doing everything possible to minimise disruption. 'This transition is being planned with due care to ensure there is no impact on service delivery to our clients,' the company said, reports Reuters. The layoffs won't be geography or domain-specific and will be concluded over the next three quarters of FY26. Earlier this month, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Milind Lakkad stated in a company call that the workforce stood at 6,13,069 by the end of the first quarter. 'Net attrition during the quarter was over 5,000 employees. We have honoured all the job offers, and we'll do so for the rest of the year. Lateral hiring will be recalibrated based on the demand outlook,' he was quoted as saying in The Indian Express report. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Lakkad also mentioned that TCS plans to keep investing in its business to stay in sync with the fast-evolving needs of its clients. Is AI the reason behind TCS's job cuts? In an exclusive conversation with Moneycontrol, TCS CEO K Krithivasan explained that the job cuts are not driven by artificial intelligence efficiency gains but are actually a part of a larger vision that aims to make the company 'more agile and future-ready'. 'It is not because that we need less people. We will continue to look for high (quality) talent, acquiring talent, training talent. That continues to happen. This is more about where there is a feasibility of deployment,' he said. TCS CEO K Krithivasan explained that the job cuts are not driven by AIefficiency gains but are actually a part of a larger vision that aims to make the company 'more agile and future-ready' in the face of rapid technological shifts. Image for Representation. Reuters TCS has already trained over 550,000 employees in basic AI skills and around 100,000 in advanced AI, hoping to prepare its workforce for the next tech wave. However, not all employees, especially those in senior positions, have been able to transition smoothly into new-age roles. The challenges are particularly stark for those accustomed to older project models. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'When we did programs in the old waterfall method, we had multiple leadership teams. That's changing,' Krithivasan noted. Despite this, experts suggest that AI and automation are silently reshaping the job market in IT. Roles like manual testing are increasingly being replaced by AI, and those who struggle to keep up with the pace of technological change are the ones most at risk. And this trend isn't unique to TCS. For the past couple of years, major tech companies have been slashing roles and leaning into automation. Earlier, Silicon Valley giant Microsoft said that roughly 30 per cent of the code is now AI-generated. What will TCS offer the affected employees? TCS has said the layoffs won't happen abruptly. Instead, the company plans to carry them out in a phased and considerate manner, ensuring those impacted are given a chance at redeployment within the company before any final decisions are made. 'It will be coming through the year. We won't do it in a hurry. We will first talk to the people that could be impacted. We will provide them an opportunity. When we are not able to provide the opportunity, then we will do what we need to do,' Krithivasan told Moneycontrol. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD For those who do end up leaving, TCS has promised to support them through a structured exit process. The company said it will follow its standard HR policies, which include notice-period pay, extended insurance coverage, severance benefits, outplacement support, and access to counselling services. 'We will do it in a very, very compassionate way,' Krithivasan added. While the company hasn't shared specific dates, the entire process is expected to roll out over the course of FY26. India bonds dip as wary traders sell before US, domestic cenbank policy

MUMBAI, July 28 (Reuters) - Indian government bonds fell in early deals on Monday, as traders nervously sold debt ahead of rate decisions by the United States and Indian central banks, and as the market lacked fresh positive cues to spur buying. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.3603% as of 10:35 a.m. IST, compared with Friday's close of 6.3505% and up nearly 8 basis points since last week. Bond yields move inversely to prices. Indian bond yields continued to rise after Friday's selloff, when Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra's commentary in an interview with the Financial Express trimmed rate cut bets in the market. "Investors expecting an August rate cut are shedding positions after the Governor's comments on Friday, so the selling pressure is expected to continue," a trader at a state-run bank said. "6.38% is a key technical level for the 10-year benchmark this week." Traders will closely eye any change in the RBI's inflation and growth forecasts to gauge its interest rate trajectory, they said. The RBI is set to announce its policy decision on August 6. Focus is also on the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, due on Wednesday, in which the central bank is widely expected to keep the rates unchanged, traders said. US yields have also hurt sentiments in the domestic market. The US 10-year bond yield was at 4.3899% in Asian hours, having risen nearly 6 basis points since last week. India's overnight index swap rates were unchanged in early trading, as market participants awaited further cues after a selloff on Friday. The one-year OIS rate was at 5.53% and the two-year OIS rate was at 5.51%. The liquid five-year OIS rate was at 5.73%. (Reporting by Khushi Malhotra; Editing by Janane Venkatraman)

Indias Kotak Mahindra Bank slumps as earnings spark asset quality concerns

(Reuters) -Shares of India's Kotak Mahindra Bank were on track for their worst day in more than a year on Monday, as a quarterly earnings miss sparked concerns of worsening asset quality. The stock fell 6.4% to 1,988.60 rupees, the lowest since mid-March and was the worst performer on India's benchmark Nifty 50 index, which slipped 0.1%. Kotak was also the top laggard on the bank and private bank indexes. At least eight analysts slashed their price targets on the "buy"-rated stock after the private lender missed quarterly profit estimates on higher provisions for potential bad loans. Asset quality pain continued for Kotak and stress in the retail commercial vehicles segment is expected to rise further, analysts at Ambit said. "Considering such volatility, and limited availability of buffer provisions, we expect fiscal 2026 credit costs to remain elevated," they said. Kotak, like several Indian banks, has been grappling with rising bad loans in the unsecured loan segment. Its gross non-performing assets ratio worsened to 1.48% of total loans at the end of June from 1.39% a year earlier. Its net interest margin, a key gauge of profitability, dropped to 4.65% from 5.02% a year earlier, reflecting the impact of the Reserve Bank of India's interest rate cuts. Analysts at Emkay Global expect the margin to contract further in the second quarter, with a gradual recovery expected from the third quarter. When interest rates are lowered, banks typically pass on the benefits to borrowers early, followed by lower deposit rates, which can temporarily squeeze margins. Earlier this month, peer Axis Bank also reported disappointing results, which fanned concerns of declining asset quality. The session's losses have trimmed Kotak's year-to-date gains to 11%, versus a 10% climb in the private banks index.
