How Artificial Intelligence is helping badminton players improve their games

There is an epidemic of poorly executed forehand air tosses in badminton, amongst the hundreds of player videos collated in Bengaluru. A bug was blighting the feature.
An AI-powered review system had picked up the trend pointing to the weakness of that high altitude shot amongst upcoming shuttlers, mostly beginners. It has zeroed in on the elbow not being properly stretched and the balance being slightly off, suggesting foot placement and arm control drills to a specific shuttler. All that the shuttler had done was upload a video of a training session/match, and the VisistAI tech from a Bengaluru startup, reeled off a basic analysis of the toss – one of the tactical weapons deployed in matches that demands consistency and accuracy on the time of contact of shuttle with racquet.
The tech startup is attempting to fill up a gap for grassroots badminton players by offering them access to biomechanic tools that analyse their technique and suggest corrections. 'One insight that was massive from the VisistAI review was that several players had a weak forehand toss, and were scoring less from that shot. It was an instruction to coaches to work with strength & conditioning coaches. Our tools provide elite insights at various stages of play by assessing skill, strokes and agility,' says Suresh Chintada, co-founder and CEO of VisistAI.
Players record their games on a smartphone mounted on a tripod, and send it off for AI model to threadbare their techniques. Typically, a rudimentary report throws up reviews on assorted skills like grip, the forehand keep shot, backhand serves besides the toss. 'Besides agility, we can track specific postures, movements on court, and shuttle flights,' explains Seshadri Raghavan, co-founder and chief tech officer.
Almost 70+ Bengaluru academies are availing of this service, ensuring a single coach can actually keep track of several games. 'We have assessment reports and smart journals that we send to the coaches, and AI acts like an assistant coach,' Suresh says.
Searchable bookmarked footage with dashboards showing historical trends and improvements tracked over several weeks, is available even as the AI assessment uses Rubric templates (predefined parameters in boxes), and reports are available in local languages.
An almost imperceptible smashing technique tweak once came up when the AI model noted, 'Preparation of elbow and arm is too low before smashing. In under pressure situations it is difficult to get good angles on the smash.'
A simple grip – though all-important- is assessed for consistent relaxed hold, finger placement, follow through of wrist, while pointing out that tiny foot shifts tend to disturb execution. 'Improve explosiveness to reach the shuttle sooner. Work on smoother timing on serves and reinforce elbow alignment in air toss,' It summarises. Grip relaxing exercises on the odd occasion it gets too tight and impedes a stroke, are advised.
For a particular shuttler, the AI model pulled out Frame No 376 for ideal shot placement on a forehand keep shot, while shuttle placement is a weakness. On the backhand serve, the player was advised steadying the stance even if it's only in a couple of instances.
'For an experienced coach, the AI model is an augmented, unblinking view with a couple of dimensions added to look at movement, posture,' says Suresh who adds that coaches have returned to tell him their level of coaching and numbers of competitive players has gone up with access to this information which is now objectively and democratically available – though at a price.
The duo always fancied sports – tennis and even running technique of marathons, though VisistAI is available for similar analyses in cricket and basketball. But all AI developments need to be taken with a pinch of salt, and the duo insist no AI can replace a coach. 'AI will never replace a coach. It's not in a position to understand mental aspects like a 'bad day' which can have a massive impact on the game. But now anybody can become a coach and access this,' Suresh adds.
Access to elite coaching is 0.1 percent in India and 25 percent in the USA, and AI models with workflow charts can help bridge these gaps.
The startup hopes to add human expert coaches to the panel to go a step further in making advice available. But the ambitions ultimately extend to predictive analysis, and the final frontier is stopping injuries from happening. 'Injury prevention is the goal. Right now tech is used in biomechanics and rehab level. But if we can predict injury before it happens and reduce chronic stress ..' says Seshadri.

Have you ever sat in a meeting where someone half your age casually mentions 'prompting ChatGPT' or 'running this through AI', and felt a familiar knot in your stomach? You're not alone. There's a growing narrative that artificial intelligence (AI) is inherently ageist, that older workers will be disproportionately hit by job displacement and are more reluctant to adopt AI tools. But such assumptions – especially that youth is a built-in advantage when it comes to AI – might not actually hold. While ageism in hiring is a real concern, if you have decades of work experience, your skills, knowledge and judgement could be exactly what's needed to harness AI's power – without falling into its traps. What does the research say? The research on who benefits most from AI at work is surprisingly murky, partly because it's still early days for systematic studies on AI and work. Some research suggests lower-skilled workers might have more to gain than high-skilled workers on certain straightforward tasks. The picture becomes much less clear under real-world conditions, especially for complex work that relies heavily on judgement and experience. Through our Skills Horizon research project, where we've been talking to Australian and global senior leaders across different industries, we're hearing a more nuanced story. Many older workers do experience AI as deeply unsettling. As one US-based CEO of a large multinational corporation told us: 'AI can be a form of existential challenge, not only to what you're doing, but how you view yourself.' But leaders are also observing an important and unexpected distinction: experienced workers are often much better at judging the quality of AI outputs. This might become one of the most important skills, given that AI occasionally hallucinates or gets things wrong. The CEO of a South American creative agency put it bluntly: 'Senior colleagues are using multiple AIs. If they don't have the right solution, they re-prompt, iterate, but the juniors are satisfied with the first answer, they copy, paste and think they're finished. They don't yet know what they are looking for, and the danger is that they will not learn what to look for if they keep working that way.' Experience as an AI advantage: Experienced workers have a crucial advantage when it comes to prompting AI: they understand context and usually know how to express it clearly. While a junior advertising creative might ask an AI to 'Write copy for a sustainability campaign', a seasoned account director knows to specify 'Write conversational social media copy for a sustainable fashion brand targeting eco-conscious millennials, emphasising our client's zero-waste manufacturing process and keeping the tone authentic but not preachy'. This skill mirrors what experienced professionals do when briefing junior colleagues or freelancers: providing detailed instructions, accounting for audience, objectives, and constraints. It's a competency developed through years of managing teams and projects. Younger workers, despite their comfort with technology, may be at a disadvantage here. There's a crucial difference between using technology frequently and using it well. Many young people may become too accustomed to AI assistance. A survey of US teens this year found that 72 per cent had used an AI companion app. Some children and teens are turning to chatbots for everyday decisions. Without the professional experience to recognise when something doesn't quite fit, younger workers risk accepting AI responses that feel right – effectively 'vibing' their work – rather than developing the analytical skills to evaluate AI usefulness. So, what can you do? First, everyone benefits from learning more about AI. In our time educating everyone from students to senior leaders and CEOs, we find that misunderstandings about how AI works have little to do with age. A good place to start is reading up on what AI is and what it can do for you: What is AI? Where does AI come from? How does AI learn? What can AI do? What makes a good AI prompt? If you're not even sure which AI platform to try, we would recommend testing the most prominent ones, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini. If you're an experienced worker feeling threatened by AI, lean into your strengths. Your decades of experience with delegation, context-setting, and critical evaluation are exactly what AI tools need. Start small. Pick one regular work task and experiment with AI assistance, using your judgement to evaluate and refine outputs. Practice prompting like you're briefing a junior colleague-be specific about context, constraints, and desired outcomes, and repeat the process as needed. Most importantly, don't feel threatened. In a workplace increasingly filled with AI-generated content, your ability to spot what doesn't quite fit, and to know what questions to ask, has never been more valuable. Getty Images OpenAI may have just fired a warning shot at the Indian IT services model with the launch of the latest version of ChatGPT. GPT-5, ChatGPT's strongest coding version yet released last week, could further dent revenues for an already struggling $283 billion Indian software services industry, as clients may push for even lower pricing. With the upgraded version, the adoption of generative artificial intelligence in software development will rise, exposing IT services firms to revenue deflation risks, Kotak Institutional Equities said in a report. 'We believe GenAI can impact revenue growth for Indian IT by 2-3% for a period of 2-3 years on a net basis,' the report said, adding that the same applies for the customer service and business process outsourcing sector as Indian IT services industry, known for hiring software coders in large numbers, is already seeing the adverse impact of the AI-led disruption. Adoption of the technology has boosted productivity by 20-40%, thereby reducing reliance on engineers and shrinking the people-based billing for Indian IT companies. Besides, the tariffs-induced macro slowdown is also now weighing on the companies that reported negative to flat growth in the last two years.'If your business still depends on armies of coders grinding through routine builds, your margins are about to get hammered,' said Phil Fersht, founder and chief executive of technology consultancy firm HFS Research. 'The smart services players will use this tech to slash delivery times, reinvent pricing and ship services like software products.' According to the company, GPT-5 is a significant leap in intelligence over all its previous models when it comes to coding, math, writing, health, visual perception and more said GPT-5 has substantial advances in reasoning, accuracy and improved instruction following, along with a drop in hallucination rates. This will reduce efforts, costs and risks around legacy modernisation for clients' technology infrastructure providing an edge for IT service providers, they said. Software service providers including large companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCLTech and Wipro are cannibalising their own revenues, as they are hit by a fundamental shift in the pricing model of the industry to outcome-based from employee-based. 'GPT-5 fundamentally lowers the cost structure for enterprise AI by significantly reducing API usage fees,' research firm Gartner said in a separate report.'OpenAI's enhancements — including 65% reduction in hallucination rates, and more transparent uncertainty communications — can reduce compliance risks and make GPT-5 more suitable for enterprise use cases (with the necessary guardrails), it added. The likes of upgraded GPT versions could accelerate modernisation in the longer-term, aiding IT services firms provide end-to-end services of viable AI-enabled use cases for businesses.'This is the year of advanced models, and GPT-5 is designed to address the needs of developers by reducing hallucinations and simplifying coding through intelligent dynamic routing. A workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Uttar Pradesh MLAs unleashed a volley of questions and concerns laced with laughter and wit. (HT Photo) From data security to political utility, to concerns about factual inaccuracies, chatbots and even horoscope predictions, the issues raised spanned a wide range at the workshop held by the Uttar Pradesh assembly at the instance of speaker Satish Mahana on Sunday on the eve of the Monsoon session that began on Monday. Some of the lawmakers wanted to know how the data collected from the House to assist AI may be secured and whether technology could help them seek votes. Even as legislators expressed their views, several video clips focusing on deliberations at the workshop did the rounds of the corridors of power. Anil Singh, a lawmaker, asked: '…how can the data so collected be secured? If someone steals the data about some persons voting in favour of some other persons, this will be disturbing… My question is important. How will we ask for votes? Can we get votes using AI? What to say and what to do (to seek votes) please explain this technicality. We don't want to become NASA engineers. We have to seek votes (of the people)...,' said Singh as lawmakers attending the workshop burst into laughter. Raising another concern, the same lawmaker said, 'Money is being withdrawn (fraudulently) through mobiles by sending OTP. When I ask people to send their application on WhatsApp, the people tell me they have a phone costing only ₹1500. How do we send it? This is good we are learning. What I understand is that we will get (from AI) what we give (data).' Another legislator said, 'If we depend on AI, it can affect our critical thinking. If we put the burden of analysis and problem solving on AI, our cognitive muscles may go weak.' At this, speaker Mahana replied in a lighter vein: 'For that you should do exercise.' 'We are making a dashboard for every Vidhan Sabha constituency… We are only making a beginning. We will have to work simultaneously on various issues,' Mahana said. A woman legislator said, 'You are aware that the people want to be in direct touch with their public representatives. They (people) get upset if any assistant (aide to legislator) speaks to them on behalf of the lawmaker. The public representatives have to connect with the people directly, be it the first time MLA or a ninth-term one like minister for parliamentary affairs Suresh Khanna. Will the AI be able to cater to this sentiment? Will the AI be helpful?' Pointing out a data glitch, lawmaker Abhay Singh said leader of opposition Mata Prasad Pandey was elected legislator for the first time in 1974 (based on the information given at the workshop), but an AI platform showed 1980 as the year of his first election. 'We will take your information (speaker's) to be correct and not the one given by the AI platform,' he said. Referring to his chat with an AI bot, he said when he asked about the possible scenario in case of a Third World War, chatbot grouped India with America. When questioned again, the chatbot said you (India) can go with Russia. 'This is what AI is,' he said. Singh also said he asked the AI chatbot to read his horoscope and predict how long the legislator will have Rajyog. The AI chatbot gave him a specific time but when confronted with another observation made by a horoscope reader, AI admitted its mistake, the lawmaker said. Sachin Yadav, an engineer by qualification, said AI needed information to work and this could be gathered either in real time or from some other database or internet. AI will probably not be effective without strengthening the database, he said. Shashank Trivedi suggested that education about AI be compulsory in primary, secondary and higher education. Another legislator pointed out that the AI was giving incorrect information about his father (who was also a legislator) and whether such mistakes can be corrected. Amid such observations, Mahana said the workshop was organised to tell the lawmakers what to ask AI and what not. Minister for parliamentary affairs Suresh Khanna also said AI helps collect information. 'If Google was a cycle, AI will make us ride the motorcycle,' he said, adding AI is not about making predictions.
