With Brits being stung by maintenance costs averaging out at a whopping £756.45 every year, experts have urged drivers to opt for these five trustworthy models which are cheap to fix and maintain
Avoid sky-high repair costs with these reliable cars that have been crowned the least expensive to own in 2025.
Drawing on more than 300,000 real-world bookings, analysis by ClickMechanic provides expert insight into the true cost of keeping different models on the road. It found the average annual maintenance cost stands at £756.45, which totals a whopping £13,540 over a typical car's lifespan.

The gap between the cheapest and most expensive models is substantial, with luxury saloons costing hundreds of pounds more every year to run in comparison to budget hatchbacks. With this in mind, here are the five most economical motors to maintain in 2025:

5. Kia CEED
The Kia CEED holds fifth place with an annual maintenance cost of £615. Renowned for its reliability and user-friendly features, the CEED benefits from Kia's strong warranty and quality engineering. This reduces the frequency and cost of repairs over time. Kia's global presence ensures parts are readily available and competitively priced. The CEED's popularity means local garages are familiar with servicing it, making routine maintenance convenient and budget-friendly for owners.
4. Peugeot 2008 SUV
The Peugeot 2008 SUV ranks fourth for affordable maintenance, costing £613 annually. Known for its stylish design and practical features, the 2008 is popular among families and city drivers. Its widespread parts availability and Peugeot's extensive dealer network help keep servicing and repairs straightforward and affordable. The model's reliability and efficient engineering also reduce unexpected expenses, making it a cost-effective choice for those seeking a balance of style and low running costs.
3. Dacia Sandero
The Dacia Sandero is the third most affordable car to maintain in the UK according to the study, with an annual upkeep of just £602. Its low maintenance costs are largely due to the Sandero'a simple engineering and inexpensive replacement parts, making repairs straightforward and budget-friendly. Dacia 's reputation for dependability is reinforced by its impressive ranking — sixth out of 31 brands according to analysis done by What Car? in 2024 — giving owners added confidence in the brand's reliability.

2. Vauxhall Grandland X
The Vauxhall Grandland X is among the most affordable cars to maintain, with annual upkeep costing just £600 — 22 per cent less than the national average. Vauxhall 's commitment to building practical, straightforward vehicles makes the Grandland X easier and cheaper to service. Additionally, its shared platform with Peugeot models ensures that replacement parts are widely available and reasonably priced, further reducing repair costs.
1. Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i20 is the cheapest car to maintain in the UK, with an annual upkeep of £580 — this works out at 25 per cent below the national average. The Hyundai i20 is designed for reliability and finished fourth out of 24 in its class in What Car?'s 2025 reliability survey. Hyundai as a brand also ranked 10th out of 31 manufacturers for dependability in 2024.
To minimise maintenance expenses, regular servicing and preventative checks are key. CEO and Co-founder of ClickMechanic, Andrew Jervis, advises: "The first thing you want to do is stick to a regular service schedule, preventative maintenance can stop bigger problems down the line. It's the same for conducting regular checks, such as tyre pressure and engine oil levels. If these are kept up, it avoids any unnecessary wear and tear."
He also recommends driving sensibly, as aggressive driving leads to premature wear. Andrew added: "If you're driving aggressively, like hard braking, navigating through potholes or speed bumps too fast or 'riding' the clutch excessively you should expect premature wear to critical components."

Goodbye Kia Ceed! Popular hatch has been sensationally killed off in the UK

The Kia Ceed has been removed from sale in the UK, marking the end of almost 20 years on the market. A Kia spokesperson confirmed the news as the XCeed variant received an update for 2026 with new engines and equipment. While this crossover edition lives on, the Ceed in its hatchback guise, as well as the Sportswagon estate and ProCeed shooting brake, have ended production and sales. Kia said: 'The end of Ceed family production frees up our manufacturing plant in Zilina, Slovakia to produce the EV4 – Kia's first European-built EV – as we prepare to offer an electric C-segment hatchback for the first time. It also frees up space on the production line for EV2, which will be manufactured in Slovakia from early 2026.' The Ceed first went on sale in 2006 – with the 'Cee'd' name – and quickly became a huge success for Kia, thanks to its industry-leading seven-year warranty, attractive pricing and solid build quality. Lotus was even involved in the original Cee'd's suspension tuning, although it was never a hot hatch by any means. While you can't buy a new Kia Ceed anymore you can check out the Auto Express Marketplace, where you'll find loads of great deals on used Ceeds, including the ProCeed and the Ceed Sportswagon. Having launched a year after the third and final generation of the Ceed, the XCeed will continue to be produced in Slovakia for the UK market. One of Kia's oldest models has had a refresh for 2026

The XCeed crossover SUV is one of the older models in Kia's line up having launched in 2019, but now it's been updated for 2026 with a new trim level range and even a couple of new engines. In 2022 the XCeed received its mid-life facelift with cosmetic tweaks including new lights, bumpers and wheels and this is all retained for the latest car with significant changes happening under the surface instead. Kia says the new XCeed is available to order now with first deliveries expected in September. First up there's a new mild-hybrid 1.0-litre 'T-GDi' engine replacing the old 1.5-litre unit. The 1.0-litre petrol engine produces 113bhp and 200Nm of torque, which is some way off the old 1.5-litre's 158bhp output. It's more frugal, however. Fitted with a six-speed manual, the new engine provides up to 47mpg, up from 44.8mpg. Advertisement - Article continues below Elsewhere there's a new 1.6-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with 177bhp and 265Nm of torque - providing a zero to 62mph time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. While the smaller 1.0-litre unit comes with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearboxes, the 1.6-litre unit only comes with the auto. There's no mention of a return for the plug-in hybrid that went off sale back in 2023. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Like the Picanto city car, which also gained an update for the 2026 model year, the XCeed's trim level structure has been re-jigged. Replacing '2' and '3' trims, the XCeed now kicks off with the 'Pure' from £25,165, rising to the 'GT-Line' from £26,565 and finally the GT-Line S from £31,215. Aside from the 177bhp engine only being offered on the GT-Line S, there are several differences between the trims in terms of equipment. The Pure gets all the same kit as the old '2' but gains some new additions such as; electric folding and heated door mirrors with LED indicators, rain-sensing wipers, black cloth and artificial leather seat upholstery, an electric driver's seat lumbar support, automatic air conditioning, paddle shifters (for the automatic only) and a selection of three drive modes. GT-Line adds bigger 18-inch wheels than the Pure's 16-inch rims, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats, sportier GT-Line design inside and out, tinted windows and adaptive cruise control. GT-Line S comes with a 12.3-inch driver's display to sit alongside the standard-fit 10.25-inch touchscreen, a wireless smartphone charger, an uprated sound system, panoramic sunroof, a powered bootlid, leather and suede upholstery and heated outer rear seats. For 'consistency across the range' Kia will add the new trim level structure to other models across its line up - whether they're pure-electric or not. Everything we know about Hyundai's funky new EV – well before it's revealed

New model will lead brand's push for more customers in key markets Open gallery Close Hyundai is readying an affordable rival for the Renault 4 as it looks to reinforce its position in Europe and get significantly closer to its Kia sibling for sales success. The imminent arrival of the Bayon-sized EV, which is likely to be badged Ioniq 2, shows the breadth of Hyundai's expanding line-up as it pushes into the booming new electric hatchback segment. The move is intended to bring new buyers to the brand. In the first half of 2025, Hyundai sold 265,680 cars in Europe, just 7939 behind its Kia sibling. The arrival of the Ioniq 2 is most notable because it will push the Korean brand into a completely new segment. Understood by Autocar to be twinned with sibling brand Kia's incoming EV2, the Ioniq 2 will plug the gap between the compact Inster and the Kona Electric in Hyundai's current six-strong electric vehicle line-up. Pictures of the car testing confirm that it will be close in size to the combustion-engined Bayon, giving the brand a foothold in a segment that is growing in popularity with the launch of the Renault 4 this summer and the imminent arrivals of the Volkswagen ID 2X and Skoda Epiq. The model is set to be revealed at the Munich motor show next month and will go on sale in the third quarter of 2026. It is understood that Kia's EV2 will arrive a few months before it. Hyundai Europe boss Xavier Martinet told Autocar: 'We are very much involved with the electrification of our line-up and to increase our electrified mix in the coming years.' These spy shots confirm that the Ioniq 2 will be a raised hatchback with a raked roofline, similar in positioning to the incoming ID 2X. Under that heavy camouflage, the design at the front is expected to mirror that of the new Ioniq 6, with slimmed LEDs and an aggressively styled 'technical' look. Inside, the Ioniq 2 will have a more tech-focused cabin than that of the hybrid-powered Tucson. Offering what Hyundai refers to as a 'step change' in usability for its models compared with the current Ioniq line-up, this includes a combined instrument and infotainment display set-up that spans roughly half the width of the dashboard. Like the EV2, the Ioniq 2 will be built on the scalable E-GMP platform used by nearly all EVs in the Hyundai Motor Group, comprising Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. It's therefore likely to get a similar set-up to that of the slightly larger Kia EV3, which is offered with either a 58.3kWh or an 81.4kWh battery pack for ranges of 267 and 372 miles respectively. All versions of the EV3 are powered by a single electric motor that sends 201bhp and 209lb ft to the front wheels. Pricing for the new crossover is likely to be close to that of the EV2, at around £25,000. Join our WhatsApp community and be the first to read about the latest news and reviews wowing the car world.
