Prince Harry had reportedly asked his uncle and Princess Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, about changing his family name — signaling that the royal rift is far from over.
The Duke of Sussex sought out his uncle's counsel about taking his late mother's last name during a recent trip to the UK, the Daily Mail reports.
Had he taken his mother's surname, the Invictus Games founder would have had to relinquish the Mountbatten-Windsor family name — one that his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, once shared.

Harry, 40, was discouraged from pursuing the change by his 61-year-old uncle, who reportedly warned that the legal process would be overly complex.
'They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step,' a friend of the 'Spare' author told the outlet.
The Post has reached out to reps for Harry and Earl Spencer for comment.
Unsurprisingly, the move likely would not have been well received by King Charles and Prince William, both of whom have long taken pride in the Mountbatten-Windsor name.

The family name combines the Windsor name with Philip's adopted surname of Mountbatten.
On their birth certificates, the children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are listed as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children were previously known by the Mountbatten-Windsor surname, it emerged last year that the family had formally chosen 'Sussex' as their official last name.
Indeed, this was further confirmed by Meghan Markle earlier this year, who revealed that she also goes by Meghan Sussex now.
In Netflix's 'With Love, Meghan,' she was quick to correct actress Mindy Kaling about her last name.
'It's so funny that you keep saying 'Meghan Markle.' You know I'm Sussex now,' Markle told the 'Mindy Project' star, 45.
'You have kids and you go, 'No, I share my name with my children,'' said the duchess, who has only visited the county of Sussex in England once.

A Daily Mail reporter admitted to wrongfully characterizing Blake Lively's claims of sexual harassment as sexual assault on the set of 'It Ends With Us' in a declaration filed Thursday. As the Lively-Baldoni legal plot thickens, reporter James Vituscka was subpoenaed by lawyers for Lively's publicist Leslie Sloane to turn over text messages in which he incorrectly framed the 'Gossip Girl' star's sexual harassment claims as assault. 'In those text messages, my use of the phrase 'sexually assaulted' was a mistake. I meant to say, 'sexually harassed.' I regret this error,' Vituscka's declaration read. 'Ms. Sloane never told me that Ms. Lively was sexually harassed or sexually assaulted by Justin Baldoni or anyone else.' Representatives for Sloane said that after being 'wrongfully dragged into this litigation' the Daily Mail reporter's statement fully vindicates the publicist. 'Leslie Sloane has repeatedly stated that she never used the phrase 'sexually assaulted' which formed the basis of Baldoni's meritless defamation claim against her and today she is fully vindicated by the declaration of James Vituscka that admits she never said those words,' Sigrid McCawley, managing partner of Boies Schiller Flexner, said in a statement obtained by TheWrap. 'The declaration also makes clear that the Wayfarer Parties never even bothered to attempt to confirm whether the outrageous allegations they were launching at Ms. Sloane were true and they were not,' the statement continued. Sloane's representatives continued to characterize the text messages as the Wayfarer team's attempts to 'ruin Ms. Sloane's reputation with this vicious and wrongful attack and she has consistently told the truth and justice has prevailed.' On Tuesday, a judge granted Lively's request to remove claims of emotional distress from her legal action against her 'It Ends With Us' co-star and director Justin Baldoni. Judge Lewis Liman denied Baldoni's motion to compel because 'the parties have agreed to dismiss Ms. Lively's 10th and 11th causes of action' without prejudice, meaning the court 'will preclude Lively from offering any evidence of emotional distress' in the future. Theresa Nist fires back at ‘Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner's claim they divorced over his cancer
Theresa Nist and Gerry Turner's journey came to an end — but not because of his health battle. The reality star who found love with Turner on Season 1 of 'The Golden Bachelor' revealed that the pair 'absolutely' didn't split over his cancer diagnosis. 'It was a zero factor, zero. Absolutely. In September, the finance whiz made it clear she had no hard feelings toward Turner. 'So Gerry and I have spoken,' Nist exclusively told The Post in September 2024. 'We don't speak regularly.
