Information panel orders filing of plaint against RTI petitioner
State Information Commissioner R. Priyakumar expressed concern over the behaviour of S. Sudalaimuthupillai of Kanniyakumari, the petitioner who sought an information under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
Instead of making good use of the noble Act, some petitioners were misusing the rights and privileges by using harsh and abusive language, which often caused mental agony to the public authorities, restraining them from discharging their duties, he said.
Condemning the objectionable words used by the petitioner against the PIO and his family members, Mr. Priyakumar asked the PA (General) to Collector to lodge a complaint with the police and submit the action taken report to the commission within a month.

Sreenivasan murder case: HC grants bail to four PFI members
The Kerala High Court has granted bail to four members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) who had been arraigned as accused in the murder of RSS leader Sreenivasan of Palakkad in 2022. A Division Bench of Justice V. Raja Vijayaraghavan and Justice K.V. Jayakumar granted them bail while hearing their plea challenging the dismissal of their bail applications by the NIA Special Court, Ernakulam. Muhammed Bilal, Riyasudheen, K.P. Ansar, and K.V. Saheer, who were granted bail, had been arraigned as among the accused in the case. They had been charged with participating in a conspiracy, conducting reconnaissance along with the other accused, and playing a prominent role in facilitating the murder. They contended that, though the incident was a 'political murder', the NIA deliberately gave it a communal colour by deleting the name of the political party from the final report, replacing it with 'a Hindu leader,' and incorporating provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NIA deposed before the court that the investigation had revealed that the PFI had a hidden agenda to overthrow democracy in India and to establish Islamic rule by 2047. The court said that the final report filed by the NIA was voluminous, consisting of 1,688 documents, 1,114 witnesses, 696 material objects, and 10 terabytes of forensic reports. Given the magnitude of the prosecution case and the stay on proceedings issued by the Supreme Court, specifically interdicting the framing of charges, there is no foreseeable possibility of the trial commencing or concluding in the near future. Out of the total 66 accused in the case, 49 had already been enlarged on bail either by the High Court or the Supreme Court, and only 12 remained in custody. The court granted bail to the four accused since the accused persons facing almost similar charges had already been released.

Hemant govt ‘grabbing' tribal land, says Champai
1 2 Ranchi: BJP MLA from Seraikela and former CM Champai Soren on Tuesday hit out at the Hemant Soren-led alliance govt by reiterating that the incumbent regime is busy "grabbing" tribal land. Addressing the media in Kanke ahead of his announced stir on Aug 24 against the proposed Rims-2 hospital project, Champai demanded that the state govt take this project to the Smart City area. "On Aug 24, I will be part of the mass protest here where tribals will plough the field to raise their voice against the govt's attempt to grab their agricultural land in the name of the hospital project. Neither I nor anyone else is against this project, but all that we are demanding is that farmers must not be robbed of the agricultural land," said Champai. Notably, in the past, many BJP leaders have already criticised this project at this particular site, citing large-scale displacement of farmers. Champai accused the state govt of violating the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and the Chotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) Act before acquiring the land for the project. However, the govt had earlier said the land belonged to it. "Nobody got any notices for land acquisition here. How can the govt take the land without following the rules? Under this regime, tribals and their land are constantly under threat," the former CM claimed. Reacting to the stir in the past, state health minister Irfan Ansari had said the land belongs to the govt and the project was aimed at revamping healthcare infrastructure, which will benefit people of Ranchi as well as the state. Activist demands transparency in functioning of T.N. SC/ST Commission
An activist has demanded transparency in the functioning of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Based on a recent Right to Information (RTI) Act reply to a number of petitions resolved by the commission since its inception in 2021, social activist Karthik said of 6,291 petitions received, only 4,173 petitions were resolved. Over 2,100 petitions had not been settled, he added. Commenting on the functioning of the Commission, Mr. Karthik said since its formation in 2021, the Commission's functioning lacked transparency. 'Starting from chairperson to the members in the Commission, all are being paid in lakhs of rupees. The chairperson, who is the retired judge, is paid ₹2.50 lakh and the vice-chairperson is paid ₹1.50 lakh,' he said. As the period of members of the first Commission, who were appointed in August 2021 ended in August 2024, a new set of members were selected and appointed in February 2025. In addition to the monthly salary, the members were enjoyed benefits like travel, assistance, stay, and so on, Mr. Karthik added. 'The lakhs and lakhs of rupees paid as salary to the Commission comes from the taxpayers' money,' Mr. Karthik said. In such a situation, to learn about the efficiency of the Commission, a platform to understand its progress should have been created, he added. Akin to the exclusive website for the SC/ST Commission in Karnataka, which allowed to review the performance of the members through the data available on resolved petitions and also comment on their performance, a website should be created for the Commission in Tamil Nadu, he said. As the number of crimes against SC and STs, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), had been increasing every year, the assessment of the Commission formed only to investigate such matters, was very essential, he said. He said: 'Only through progressive comments and suggestions could the functioning of commission be reviewed and improved. The State government, if wishes to mitigate crimes against SC/STs should provide an opportunity for the public to take part in the Commission's functioning.'
