Braintree set to begin play in Little League World Series. Here's everything to know

Braintree's summerlong quest to capture a Little League World Series championship begins Thursday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The boys of summer from Massachusetts earned the right to represent New England in the prestigious tournament after a walk-off win over New Hampshire last week. Braintree's team has been a formidable force this summer, remaining undefeated through regional tournament play. They'll next take on South Carolina at 3 p.m. on Thursday. It will air on ESPN. The team's run to Williamsport is the longest in Braintree American's program history, and support has been off the charts, with fans packing local bars and restaurants to cheer the squad on. Braintree arrived in Williamsport last Friday after holding a fundraiser to pay for travel and accommodations. 'We appreciate everything they've done. It's awesome that the community has backed us up like this, and other towns, it's just been incredible,' Shawn Needle, whose son plays second base, told Boston 25's Butch Stearns. PJ Kippenhan, whose son Owen plays first base and pitches, added, 'I cannot believe the support they've given. It makes us want to do even better. We're telling them how much people are behind them. The support is unbelievable.' Players and coaches took part in the annual 'Grand Slam' parade on Tuesday night, which marks the official start of the tournament. The Little League World Series features 38 games over 11 days. There are a total of 20 teams participating in the tournament, including 10 from the United States and 10 from around the world. This means Braintree will need to win three rounds to advance to the United States Champions game. If they emerge victorious in that round, they'll square off against an international team for all the marbles in the Little League World Series final. Alexander Volkanovski responds to Aaron Pico: 'I mop the floor with him'

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski warns Aaron Pico that he's a different level. Pico (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) said he's confident that he has the skillset to knock out Volkanovski (27-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC), and that the champion has never faced anyone with his wrestling caliber. Volkanovski, who's fought the likes of Islam Makhachev, Ilia Topuria, and Max Holloway, is not threatened by Pico's game. "You've got to think that," Volkanovski responded to Pico in an interview with FOX Sports Australia. "That's perfectly fine. Everyone has a puncher's chance, so he does have big hands. He is an All-American wrestler. But I'll tell you right now, what's the bet if we were to wrestle, I'd embarrass him there anyway? That's the thing. A lot of people want to be like, 'Oh, I did this, I did that.' Like I haven't faced them guys in the gym. "I've faced really, really good wrestlers even much heavier than him, and trust me, I do all right. MMA grappling is my world. I love that. He's got to have that confidence. I'm not really going to take it serious until he goes and shows me something. You've done stuff in your other promotions and whatnot. Come over here, do it here, all right? Then I'll look into it a little bit more. But yeah, he's only got a puncher's chance. I'll leave it at that." Pico makes his octagon debut against Lerone Murphy (16-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 319 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) co-main event at United Center in Chicago. Volkanovski thinks the winner could end up being his next title challenger. "It excites me because I reckon I'd crumble him in the wrestling department," Volkanovski said. "He might be good for one takedown, two takedowns – if he even gets me down, I'm straight back up. Watch him not want to clinch up anymore after that. His best bet is to obviously try and land a big shot. Other than that, I mop the floor with him."

The Tiger Beat: Rain, rain go away

Good morning, everyone! The Tigers suffered a rather abysmal loss to the White Sox last night, thanks to some very rough pitching from the fifth inning onward. Despite a few rally efforts, the team simply weren't able to undo the damage. Let's just hope that this, unlike the weather, is not a 'when it rains it pours' situation. The Tigers will face the White Sox one more time this afternoon and are hoping to claim a series win. Meanwhile, we've got lots of fun tidbits in today's links, including a look at which Tigers took the number three spot in ESPN's Top 50 players list (the answer will not surprise you), and a few minor league moves. On the general baseball side of things, Shohei Ohtani could have new legal woes, and baseball players share what horror movies have them shaking (some answers WILL surprise you). Let's get right into it! Detroit Tigers News Spencer Torkelson's reaction to getting that go-ahead home run in last night's bizarre win. Rain delays never slow down the TV crew. Some minor league moves to keep an eye on. ESPN ranks the top 50 players in baseball right now, and here's what they had to say about Tarik Skubal, who ranked third (behind only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani): After winning the Cy Young Award last season, Skubal has gotten better in 2025: higher strikeout rate, lower walk rate, lower batting average allowed and pitching slightly deeper into games. His SO-BB% is one of the highest of all time. He doesn't have the AL Cy Young locked up, given the strong competition, but the consensus view is he's the top starter in the majors. AL Central News Would Steven Kwan be a reliable emergency contact? I suppose that depends who you ask. A look at why Luke Keaschall was named AL Player of the Week. Jose Ramirez has his 27th multi-home run game for the Guardians. MLB News Which horror movies scare MLB players? (Jack Flaherty cameo!) Mark your calendars, the postseason schedule is here. An updated ranking of all 30 farm teams from MLB dot com. (The Tigers come in at 6th after ranking number 1 in the pre-season.) The Mets hit so many home runs against the Braves, they ran out of home run fireworks. Shohei Ohtani's legal woes persist as he and his agent are being sued over a real estate development project in Hawaii.
