Celebration turns into chaos: How Bengaluru stampede unfolded during RCB's IPL bash
While entry to the stadium was permitted only through passes, fans without access gathered in massive numbers around the premises. According to preliminary information shared with the government, a temporary slab placed over a drain near the stadium premises collapsed under the weight of those standing on it. The collapse reportedly caused panic, leading to a stampede. Here is the account of Nikhil Naz, Consulting Editor – Sports, who was at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium along with cameraman Deepak, describing how the stampede unfolded.advertisementThe stampede happened outside Cubbon Park Metro Station. It occurred as a huge crowd of youth, mostly males, blocked a road to dance. People who were trying to move to either side of the road could not move because the road was blocked by this boisterous crowd. That's when people started pushing into the crowd, trying to move either to the left or the right side of the stadium. In the melee, young people-mostly girls and some teenage boys-got trampled upon. There were no security personnel in this area. Security had restricted themselves to only the gates. The people who got trampled fainted and were brought inside the stadium to be taken to hospital in the ambulances that were deployed inside. Some were taken to hospital by ambulance. But because there were only two ambulances inside, some weren't lucky enough to get one. Those who didn't get an ambulance were carried in the arms by security personnel. These security people ran towards the main road to find cars to take these unconscious people to the nearby hospital. Because the roads immediately outside the stadium were blocked by crowds, unconscious people had to be carried for 500 metres to reach a point where regular traffic was flowing.advertisementWe got caught in the crowd because we were heading to Gate 13, our entry point. When we started going towards the gate, there were three different forces: one going in one direction (Cubbon Park to Gate 13), another going in the opposite direction (from Gate 13 towards Gates 1 and 2), and a third force of people who were standing in the middle of the road, screaming and dancing. At one stage, we lost control of our movement and naturally got pushed around, eventually reaching outside the whirlpool of the crowd. But because me and Deepak (my cameraman) are full-grown men, we could survive the push of the crowd. Women and young male fans, however, would have easily succumbed to the force of the crowd and got trampled upon.In a statement, RCB said it amended the fan interaction event immediately upon learning of the incident. "The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us," the statement said.BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia acknowledged there were lapses in the organisation of the event, but clarified that the cricket board had no role in it. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the board was not even informed about who was behind the arrangements. The RCB team was earlier felicitated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Vidhana Soudha. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had received the players at the airport earlier in the day before joining them for the event in the evening. You May Also Like

Dale Steyn goes bonkers, uses F-word after Dewald Brevis blasts blockbuster T20I century against Australia
Ever since Dewald Brevis first came to the limelight in the U19 World Cup for South Africa, he has been destined for great things. It has taken some time for the right-hander to display his big-hitting exploits at the world stage, but one cannot complain. What a talent, the 22-year-old truly is. Brevis is finally a consistent feature in South Africa's T20I side, and on Tuesday, Mitchell Marsh's Australia witnessed what a force to reckon with Brevis truly is. The young batter smashed 125 runs off 56 balls in the second T20I as the Proteas registered a comprehensive 53-run win. Dewald Brevis celebrates after scoring a century during the second T20I against Australia. (AP) Following Brevis' remarkable performance with the bat, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn reserved some special praise, saying the former is the 'real deal.' 'Brevis is the real f***** deal,' Steyn wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Brevis smashed 12 fours and 8 sixes in his unbeaten knock of 125 as he batted at a strike rate of 223.21, blowing the wind out of Australia pacers' sails. He didn't even spare Josh Hazlewood as the premier pacer conceded 56 runs in his quota of four overs. The right-hander also took down Australia's spinners, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa, which was the main reason the hosts had no grip on the contest. As a result of Brevis' knock, South Africa posted 218/7 in the allotted twenty overs. South Africa had no difficulty in defending the score as Australia were bowled out for 165 in 17.4 overs. Brevis also completed two catches in the outfield as he rounded off a remarkable game for himself and the Proteas. What did Brevis say? Dewald Brevis, known as 'Baby AB', said that he is really grateful to god after his whirlwind blitz in the second T20I. The right-handed batter had earlier become a household name this year after coming in as a replacement for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. In the second T20I against Australia, Dewald Brevis also smashed the highest T20I score by a South African batter. 'I haven't thought about it to be honest (on having the highest score for South Africa in T20Is). Really grateful and thankful to god for winning tonight. We want to win and to come back stronger after the first game.' 'Everyone played a part, and we took our catches. They are great players and they hit the ball hard and over the ropes, we have to be on it in this format. We played well today, so it's great,' he added. The three-match T20I series between Australia and South Africa stands on level terms. Both teams will now play the decider on Saturday, August 16, at the Cazalys Stadium in Cairns.

CSK have to trade R Ashwin and... for Sanju Samson: Chennai offered way out to enforce 'transition from MS Dhoni'
Former Chennai Super Kings star Robin Uthappa reacted to media reports claiming all was not well between Sanju Samson and Rajasthan Royals, prompting the captain to ask the franchise to release or trade him ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Uthappa said that, considering RR's decisions during the IPL 2025 season, Samson's reported move was always a writing on the wall. Sanju Samson is reportedly set to part ways with Rajasthan Royals(PTI) Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uthappa pointed out that the Rajasthan Royals already have promising players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Riyan Parag filling key batting positions. He questioned where that leaves Samson, suggesting the captain would likely be pushed down to the number four spot—a role he might not want, given that he opens for India. Uthappa further explained that the wicketkeeper-batter probably saw this as a 'writing on the wall,' especially with RR's tendency to back their youngsters. He added that Samson may be trying to stay ahead of the curve by seeking a move now, aiming to open elsewhere and maintain his spot at the top of India's batting order. Uthappa said: "They have both Yashasvi, who has done really well for them, and Suryavanshi has absolutely smacked it out of the park, and Riyan Parag likes to bat at number three. Where does that leave Sanju Samson? A number four spot. Would I want to bat at number four when I am opening for India? Absolutely not. From his perspective, he probably felt that perhaps that won't change at RR, and they back their youngsters, quite a bit, don't they?" "That has been the culture there at RR. So he probably sees it as a writing on the wall, perhaps, and so perhaps, he's trying to get a little bit ahead of the curve a little bit and say, 'let me move now' so that I can go elsewhere and open the batting and still vie for that position at the top of the order in the Indian team. So that's perhaps a small reasoning as well". Uthappa finds a way out for CSK Media reports on Samson's departure from Rajasthan Royals also revealed that Chennai Super Kings have openly expressed interest in signing the India star, viewing him as a perfect replacement for MS Dhoni. However, with Samson's current valuation at INR 18 crore, a trade deal might prove difficult. Just days after the Samson reports, speculation arose that Ravichandran Ashwin might part ways with CSK, fueling rumours of a potential trade between RR and Chennai involving the two players. Although Ashwin clarified why such a trade may not materialise—citing his contract being half Samson's value—Robin Uthappa suggested a solution. He proposed that if Chennai are serious about acquiring Samson, they could trade both Ashwin and Vijay Shankar in exchange for the India batter. "CSK for sure. If they are able to get him and if they are able to snap him up, then it'll do really well for him. I think the transition of MS Dhoni to the next wicketkeeper, they already have in Sanju, so that is already taken care of. Otherwise, they would have to look at, say, at this point, say Devon Conway as a wicketkeeping option. But if he comes onboard, there is a lot of good that can happen for CSK," he said. "What they don't have? They only have Shimron Hetmyer at six. They don't have a finisher at number six or seven. Maybe Sam Curran. Vijay Shankar could be the one who goes with Ashwin as well. That could happen. He's a pretty decent bowler, but they haven't utilised him." "I think perhaps Rajasthan also feel Sanju doesn't want to be there anymore, so if a player doesn't want to be there, why do we have to keep him? Give him what he wants. In that sense, I think it makes sense for them," Uthappa said.

BJP accuses Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar of abetting RCB stampede
Bengaluru: The opposition BJP accused the govt of "abetting" the stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations at M Chinnaswamy stadium on June 4, and demanded a CBI investigation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Eleven people died in the incident. The accusation came during a discussion under Rule 69, with opposition leader R Ashoka and BJP veteran S Suresh Kumar leading the attack. Ashoka, in a two-and-a-half-hour speech, alleged the govt was complacent and failed to anticipate the massive turnout despite repeated warnings from all quarters. "In your hurried intent to lap up popularity and affection of the people, you rushed into the celebratory event… If it was not so, then why did traffic police decide to draw up traffic diversions around the stadium?" he asked. Drawing a parallel with suicide cases, Kumar said: "This govt is an abettor in this tragedy." BJP demanded a joint house committee and a CBI inquiry, along with "an unconditional apology from the govt" to families of the victims. Ashoka called it a total failure of crowd management, saying, "Who gave permission for the celebration? Who finalised the SOP? Were ambulances kept ready?" He insisted a case of negligence causing death should have been filed, adding, "I fail to understand what the CM and deputy CM were doing." He criticised the IPL, alleging it fuels betting among the poor: "My own cook indulged in theft to get money for betting," Ashoka said. He accused the govt of seeking political mileage, while presenting govt letters to top officials as evidence of official permission. "Without directions from the CM and deputy CM, it would have been impossible for DPAR to permit the event," he said. Quoting Justice Michael D'Cunha's report, he said directions from the CMO to RCB and event managers were documented. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If the govt had spent just five minutes thinking about it on June 4, the tragedy could have been prevented," Ashoka said. Yatnal berates Ashoka Suspended BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal, meanwhile, castigated opposition leader R Ashoka during the debate on the stampede, for shying away from directly blaming CM Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar. "I have heard you since morning speaking about the faults of the administration, but nowhere are you fixing blame on the political leadership of this govt," Yatnal said, intervening in the discussion. "Say it in plain words that the CM and DCM are directly responsible for the tragedy." Yatnal was suspended from BJP for six years for alleged anti-party activities.
