‘Glitch' in display changes bogie positions at last minute, passengers run around Ajni station

Nagpur: Passengers boarding the Nagpur–Pune Humsafar Express (train no. 22142) on Friday faced severe inconvenience and chaos after the coach positions were changed multiple times on the display boards, triggering panic and confusion on platform no.
3 of Ajni railway station.
The train, scheduled to depart at 3.15pm and reach Pune at 6.25am the next day, was delayed on Friday and did not arrive until 3.50pm. In the meantime, passengers — especially senior citizens — were left scrambling along the length of the platform in search of their coaches as platform indicators kept displaying incorrect information.
"There was total mismanagement. The B1 coach, which was supposed to be at the rear, was shown at the front.
Then the position was changed. One of the attendants told us it had been reversed three times," said Venkatesh Iyer, a harried passenger. "No proper display was given. The final position did not match what was shown earlier on the platform boards."
Speaking to TOI, a senior railway official clarified that it was a minor technical glitch and only a temporary one. "We had shifted some trains from the main station to Ajni, and this was the first such train.
The signboards required updated data — it was a glitch, which was sorted within 15 minutes," the official said.
However, many passengers reported that after finally locating their coaches, they had to rush to the opposite end of the platform multiple times due to last-minute changes in the displays. "Everyone was running around in panic. Seniors were especially troubled," said another passenger Rohit Sharma. "We went from front to back, then back to front.
It was done three or four times."
Passengers described the boarding experience as 'nightmarish' due to the repeated shuffling of coach positions and lack of real-time announcements or assistance. Some even missed boarding in the confusion and had to be helped into the train at the last moment.
The train rake reportedly arrived just 30 minutes before departure, adding to the confusion. While passengers expected order and clarity, the display boards kept changing the coach positions, contradicting what officials on the ground were telling them.
Passengers have urged the Central Railway authorities to improve platform coordination, especially in cases where rake or last-minute changes are involved.

Red alert for Delhi: IMD issues warning, as heavy rains flood streets and cancel flights

When heavy monsoon rains pound Delhi, they don't just bring inconvenience; they can disrupt entire routines. Streets flood, traffic slows to a crawl, flights get delayed or canceled, and the city's infrastructure gets tested to its limits. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Recently, that disruption has elevated from a yellow alert to a full-blown red alert, which is a clear signal that the situation is serious and immediate action is needed. Whether someone is heading out for work, catching a flight, or watching the forecast, what lies ahead in the day demands attention. Parts of Delhi-NCR were hit by heavy rain early Thursday morning, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to elevate the weather warning from yellow to red alert. The streets of NCR are highly inundated The downpour brought severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the region. Streets in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad were inundated, with vehicles crawling through flooded roads and commute times significantly impacted. This intense spell of rain is intensifying just ahead of Independence Day, raising concerns over potential disruptions to celebrations and travel plans. IMD issues a warning for heavy downpour The IMD has issued alerts not just for Delhi-NCR, but also for Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh, warning of continued heavy rainfall in the coming hours. According to a TOI report, over 300 flights were disrupted during a heavy rain spell over Raksha Bandhan, with areas like Safdarjung and Pragati Maidan recording more than 100 mm of rain within hours. On another morning, more than 130 flights were delayed as rain battered the region. Climate experts note that this monsoon season has deviated from usual patterns. 'Last year, we had La Niña conditions, which were driving the monsoon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This time, there are neutral conditions, but we have had a lot of active weather systems dominating northwest India. This has kept the plains particularly wet, with light to moderate spells on most days and heavy spells on isolated days,' explained Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, as per a TOI report. With monsoon still active, more rain is expected to push the city even closer to or beyond that benchmark. The red alert isn't just a label; it's a warning for us to stay informed, take precautions, and adjust plans as the monsoon continues to challenge life in India's capital.

Nagpur's Private Bus Ban Without Alternative Hubs to Hit Passengers Hard Before Festive Rush

Nagpur: The last-minute traffic clampdown on private buses has thrown both operators and passengers into disarray ahead of the Janmashtami–Pola–Ganesh Utsav travel rush. From August 13, the city's traffic police barred private buses from halting anywhere inside the Inner Ring Road between 8 am and 10 pm — without creating even a single designated satellite terminal, parking bay, or passenger shelter on the outskirts. The month-long order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani, targets all private buses without authorised premises in the city. Operators have just seven days to update booking portals with new boarding and alighting points. But thousands of passengers who booked tickets weeks in advance now face last-minute diversions, longer commutes, and higher costs — with no clarity on exactly where they will be picked up or dropped off. In cities like Hyderabad, Pune, Surat, and Mumbai, similar restrictions have worked only because authorities first invested in satellite bus stations linked to city buses, autos, and metro lines. These hubs provide waiting areas, ticket counters, food stalls, and security. Nagpur, however, is attempting the same shift with no alternative network in place — a recipe for chaos that could see crowds spilling onto unmarked roadside spots near metro stations and choking peripheral roads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The policy also sits uneasily alongside a central govt-backed directive issued in April 2023 — and reiterated by Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar after a meeting chaired by state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik — exempting All India Tourist Permit (AITP) buses from penalties if stationary only for boarding or alighting. That exemption now directly collides with the local police's push to keep all private coaches outside Inner Ring Road, creating contradictory rules and leaving operators unsure which directive takes precedence. Transport planners warn that such a ban, if implemented without preparation, risks simply relocating congestion rather than resolving it. "You can't just pull the plug and expect order to emerge. Without marked terminals, signage, and last-mile links, you're just moving the mess to the outskirts," one metropolitan transport official told TOI. Operators say the sudden change will force them to improvise at unsafe, inconvenient spots on the city fringes, adding to travel times and risking accidents. For passengers — especially elderly travellers, families with children, and those arriving late at night — the absence of lit, secure waiting areas is a serious safety concern. Officials insist the restriction is needed to ease festive-season gridlock and improve pedestrian safety. But the lack of coordination between the traffic department, the state transport authority, and the local civic agencies has exposed years of missed opportunities to develop planned intercity bus hubs. For now, Nagpur's passengers and operators will have to navigate not just congested roads, but a tangle of unclear rules and absent infrastructure in the busiest travel weeks of the year. TRAVEL TANGLE Ban applies between 8 am and 10 pm for all private buses without authorised premises inside Inner Ring Road Operators have seven days to update booking portals with new pick-up and drop-off locations No satellite bus terminals exist in Nagpur, unlike in other major cities Policy coincides with festive-season travel surge for Janmashtami, Pola, and Ganesh Utsav Overlap between state transport directive (protecting AITP buses) and police order causes enforcement confusion Experts warn congestion may shift to outskirts without last-mile connectivity Officials cite pedestrian safety and smoother traffic flow as primary goals Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
