Recently, that disruption has elevated from a yellow alert to a full-blown red alert, which is a clear signal that the situation is serious and immediate action is needed. Whether someone is heading out for work, catching a flight, or watching the forecast, what lies ahead in the day demands attention.
Parts of Delhi-NCR were hit by heavy rain early Thursday morning, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to elevate the weather warning from yellow to red alert.
The streets of NCR are highly inundated
The downpour brought severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the region. Streets in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad were inundated, with vehicles crawling through flooded roads and commute times significantly impacted.
This intense spell of rain is intensifying just ahead of Independence Day, raising concerns over potential disruptions to celebrations and travel plans.
IMD issues a warning for heavy downpour
The IMD has issued alerts not just for Delhi-NCR, but also for Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh, warning of continued heavy rainfall in the coming hours.
According to a TOI report, over 300 flights were disrupted during a heavy rain spell over Raksha Bandhan, with areas like Safdarjung and Pragati Maidan recording more than 100 mm of rain within hours. On another morning, more than 130 flights were delayed as rain battered the region.
Climate experts note that this monsoon season has deviated from usual patterns. 'Last year, we had La Niña conditions, which were driving the monsoon.

This time, there are neutral conditions, but we have had a lot of active weather systems dominating northwest India. This has kept the plains particularly wet, with light to moderate spells on most days and heavy spells on isolated days,' explained Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, as per a TOI report.
With monsoon still active, more rain is expected to push the city even closer to or beyond that benchmark.
The red alert isn't just a label; it's a warning for us to stay informed, take precautions, and adjust plans as the monsoon continues to challenge life in India's capital.

With Beas river in spate, SDRF teams deployed in Sultanpur Lodhi villages
1 2 Kapurthala: With the Beas river in spate, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in several villages of Sultanpur Lodhi within the Dhusi bundh. The teams have assisted the district administration in delivering dry rations, animal fodder, and drinking water to residents marooned in their homes. Crops spread over thousands of acres along the river have been submerged. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha member Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal and his volunteers have begun evacuating residents and delivering relief materials. In previous years, they had similarly assisted locals during floods. Deputy commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal said the SDRF was deployed and kept on alert before the water levels increased. He said a relief centre was also established at Govt School, Lakh Varhian, in the Mand area to support affected residents. Medical teams have been deployed to provide immediate healthcare assistance as needed. Additional deputy commissioner (General) Navneet Kaur Bal has been appointed as the overall in-charge of relief operations and flood prevention measures. She will be stationed at Sultanpur Lodhi to oversee all arrangements, ensuring seamless coordination and execution. Though the district administration has urged residents of low-lying areas to reach safe places, people are not leaving their houses completely and are shifting only the children and women to safe places, mainly with their relatives. Pilibhit–Uttarakhand road stretch swept away by floods
PILIBHIT: A 20–25ft stretch of the Majhola–Sitarganj road, connecting Pilibhit with Uttarakhand, was washed away by floodwaters from the Kailash river on Thursday afternoon, cutting off interstate traffic. The breach, near Birhani village in the district, has hit over 500 students from half a dozen villages who travel daily by school buses to English-medium schools in Sitarganj, Uttarakhand. The spot lies barely 200ft from the main channel of the Kailash, which forms part of the UP–Uttarakhand border. Locals said the same stretch was swept away in floods last year as well. After that, the PWD had built a long culvert using Hume pipes, but it failed to withstand the force of the river's discharge this time. SDM Amaria, Mayank Goswami, said PWD assistant engineer Jaipal Lodhi has been directed to conduct a technical survey and start repairs at the earliest to restore traffic. 'A long-term solution will be decided by PWD engineers, but I will suggest the construction of a bridge here,' he said. Residents said the disruption would also affect farmers and traders. 'Many farmers have shops and businesses in Sitarganj, while others go there for banking, fuel, fertiliser and pesticide needs. Now, we will have to travel 30–35km more via Amaria,' said Manjit Singh, a farmer from Bela Pokhra village. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
