I'm an ex McDonald's worker - what I think of the new breakfast menu item
the revival of the breakfast wrap and the introduction of a new fruit juice.
So, when I was invited to be one of the first people in the UK to try something "brand new" to the breakfast menu in Liverpool's recently revamped Lord Street store, I was pleasantly surprised. The morning menu has been almost unchanged for decades - so my mind went into overdrive thinking of all the creations the McDonald's bosses could have cooked up.
I've worked in several McDonald's kitchens between 2014 and 2018, so I half expected that the 'new' item would use some of the existing ingredients. Upon arriving, the McDonald's staff asked me, 'red or brown?' which confirmed that it wouldn't be a breakfast of chicken nuggets or classic burgers.
It took just a few minutes for all my questions to be answered when two sandwiches arrived. Simplicity was the key here as McDonald's workers talked us through the idea behind the new Saver Bacon Roll (£2.19) and Sausage Roll (£1.99).
The sandwiches arrived with our choice of meat paired with a dash of either ketchup or brown sauce. Instead of an iconic McMuffin, our breakfast was served on a toasted burger bun.
It was explained that these would be the stars of the new morning Saver Menu - offering hungry customers a cheap and cheerful way to start their day. I'll admit, upon seeing the items, I was not thinking about dropping my go-to McMuffin order for one.
However, they did end up impressing me with a much lighter experience. I felt like this would be a much easier on-the-go option than a towering McMuffin or a packed Breakfast Wrap.
We were told that, once available, these could be bundled with selected drinks to make a £2.99 Saver Meal. A hash brown would not be included, but nothing stops you from adding the £1.59 golden treat to your order.
I was also told that the new Bacon Roll would not replace the existing Bacon Roll for fans who usually opt for this of a morning. The new Bacon Roll is offered as a cost-effective alternative, while the sausage sandwich was something entirely new.
These buns will be launched in over 330 McDonald's stores across the north west. The areas McDonald's customers will be able to order the new breakfast items from include:
These will be launched alongside the new seasonal menu, which you can read about here, on May 7. If successful, they will be available later in the year in more locations.

Gird your loins, McDonald's fans: the Snack Wrap is back this summer
McDonald's fans have been very busy in the past ten years—ever since the beloved Snack Wrap was discontinued in 2016, diners have been asking the world-famous fast-food chain to bring back the treat. McD's devotees have desperately taken to social media and even created a petition that garnered almost 19,000 signatures in an effort to see the wrap on the menu again. And now those Snack Wrap dreams are coming true: the fan-favorite menu item is officially returning to participating McDonald's restaurants on Thursday, July 10. For those who aren't familiar, the Snack Wrap is a soft flour tortilla holding McCrispy strips—all-white-meat chicken strips that are breaded and fried—topped with lettuce, a mix of cheddar jack and Monterey Jack cheeses and your choice of sauce (ranch, honey mustard or salsa roja). The roll-up comes in two flavors: The spicy version has a touch of habanero pepper, a flavor aficionados might recognize from the Spicy McCrispy sandwich already on the menu, while the ranch option has those classic hints of garlic and onion. The Snack Wrap was phased out nationally in 2016, and now as we hit summer 2025 and its blistering temperatures, we have a chance to eat the chain's sole menu item that isn't hot (other than the desserts and beverages). It's a healthier option than many on the menu, coming in at less than 300 calories. And, as folks who created the petition point out, it's the perfect snack for a road trip because you can hold it in one hand and drive with the other.
