Atom says Malaysia sees around 15 cases of radioactive material smuggling yearly
The syndicate forged customs declaration forms that stated it was importing toys, dairy products or textiles as a cover for smuggling in the radioactive materials.
Atom Malaysia deputy director-general Monalija Kostor said the syndicate's activities were recently uncovered after an inspection by the authorities.
She said attempts to smuggle in the radioactive materials were carried out via land and sea routes, involving the national border areas, with an average of 15 such cases per year.
'The syndicate also attempted to smuggle in radioactive materials via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang and through the entry point in Penang.
'However, the most frequent attempts occurred in Port Klang, Selangor, where the radioactive materials were declared as other items,' she told reporters after the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise, Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand-Singapore 2025 (MITSATOM 2025) opening ceremony at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel here today.
Present at the event were Atom Malaysia director-general Noraisha Pungut and Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin.
Monalija said Atom Malaysia actively conducts radioactive material smuggling detection at Malaysian borders through the installation of Radiation Portal Monitors (RPM) at the respective entry points.
'Most of the radioactive materials are smuggled in from foreign countries, including some taken out of our own country without a licence.
"This activity, which is carried out illegally without permission, can cause harm and be used by terrorists,' she said.
Monalija explained that the radioactive materials were smuggled mainly for use in the oil and gas, electronics, research and medical industries.
She added that such radioactive material, which is very dangerous when openly exposed, was smuggled to reduce the cost of legally importing the material.
'Legally importing radioactive material usually costs more than RM1 million and is dependent on the type of radioactive material.
'By smuggling these materials, the users aim to maximise their profits without realising the harmful public health effects and national security risks they pose,' she said.

DVS investigates animal deaths on Penang Hill as suspected poisoning case unfolds
GEORGE TOWN, July 7 — The Penang Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) today collected samples from the carcasses of animals believed to have been poisoned in the Penang Hill area. Its director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the samples have been sent to the Penang DVS laboratory for further analysis, including to determine whether the animals were poisoned. 'Penang DVS officers are conducting further investigations, including taking samples from the carcasses and sending them to our laboratory. So far, no other materials have been found at the site, as the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has already cleaned the area.'Based on our investigation, the incident occurred on July 5, and the carcasses had already undergone autolysis (decomposition), making them unsuitable for a post-mortem. Trio to face lesser charge over Palestinian's kidnapping
Fourteen people were charged with kidnapping a Palestinian man on Sept 28, 2022, to obtain confidential information on how to create and disable computer software used to hack mobile phones. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has accepted the representation of three men previously charged in connection with the kidnapping of a Palestinian man three years ago. Kuala Lumpur prosecution director Badius Zaman Ahmad informed the High Court here of the development on the first day of the trial involving 14 accused today. The three are Edy Ko'im Said, Al Hatim Fauzi, and Azwan Jamaludin, aged 26 to 46. 'We will offer them an alternative charge under Section 365 of the Penal Code (for kidnapping with the intent of secretly and wrongfully confining a person),' Badius told Justice K Muniandy. Section 365 provides for a jail term of up to seven years and a fine, upon conviction. The court set July 10 for the alternative charge to be read to the trio and for them to enter their plea, as well as to hear the outcome of representations submitted by some of the other accused to the AGC. Previously, all 14 accused were charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961 with abducting the victim for ransom, which is punishable by 30 to 40 years in prison, and a whipping, upon conviction. The other accused are Norakmal Hassan, Dody Junaidi, Tengku Arif Bongsu Tengku Hamid, Naziree Mustapha, Faizull Hardey Isa, Iqmal Abdul Rahis, Sufian Saly, Zaidi Zain, and Tengku Hazarul Ismail Tengku Hamid, aged between 28 and 59. Married couple Nidarahayu Zainal, 36, and Raibafie Amdan, 41, were also charged under the Kidnapping Act. All 14 are accused of kidnapping the 31-year-old victim to obtain confidential information on how to create and disable computer software used to hack mobile phones. The kidnapping allegedly took place along Jalan Mayang here at about 10.40pm on Sept 28, 2022. Nidarahayu, Raibafie, and Tengku Arif were also charged with money laundering involving RM250,000 on Oct 20, 2023.

20-year-old claims trial to raping younger sister over 2 years

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : A 20-year-old in Kelantan was charged in the Kota Bharu sessions court today with raping his younger sister on three occasions over two years. The accused, who works at a food outlet, claimed trial after the charges were read before judge Zulkifli Abllah, Sinar Harian reported. He was accused of raping his sister when she was 11 at a house in Bachok in April 2023, and again in December 2024 and April this year. The charges were framed under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for between eight and 30 years in prison and at least 10 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Firdaus Zainal Abidin. The victim, now 13, is currently in the care of the welfare department. Firdaus had appealed for the accused to be allowed bail, saying he was a first-time offender and that the first offence allegedly occurred when he was 17. 'He got married just three months ago and his wife is in the early stages of pregnancy. His father and wife are both here today, ready to act as sureties and to ensure that he doesn't bother the victim,' he said. The lawyer added that the accused would be moving to Kuala Lumpur with his wife for work. Faiz objected to the bail application but asked the court to impose an amount of RM15,000 if it decided to allow the accused bail. 'The rapes allegedly occurred when the victim was 11, 12 and 13. These are three serious accusations against her own brother. And the court is well aware of the seriousness of these cases in Kelantan. 'The victim is traumatised and receiving treatment after confirmation that she's experiencing psychological stress from the incidents,' he said. The judge fixed bail at RM30,000 for all three charges and set Aug 6 for case mention. The accused did not post bail.
