TunM to PMX: No harm stepping down due to pubic pressure; both Boris Johnson, Sheikh Hasina did so

TWICE former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged his once disciple-turned-nemesis Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to resign immediately because he is clearly clueless on running the country, thus only creating a wide array of hardships for Malaysians at large.
Speaking at the Periktan Nasional (PN)-fuelled Himpunan Mandat Negarawan rally in Alor Setar last night (July 17), the centenarian said various gatherings have been and will be held are to persuade PMX to step down from his position of Prime Minister (PM).
Last night's gathering also featured PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhamad Sanusi Md Nor.
Although it is customary for PMs to step down from office through elections, this is not necessarily so as evident from what has been done by PMs of several countries, according to Dr Mahathir.
'In the UK, Boris Johnson who was embroiled in the Partygate scandal which entailed gatherings of government and Conservative Party staff during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 (when public health restrictions prohibited most gatherings) reigned half-way following a mass revolt by ministers.
'In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as mass protest was held to demand her resignation till she eventually fled to India,' Dr Mahathir told a crowd of more than 30,000 who attended the gathering at the Suka Menanti Stadium in Alor Setar.
'In Japan, even if he makes the slightest mistake, the PM has to quit. Many Japanese ministers, too, have resigned in this manner. Don't wait for the election. When the people already dislike the PM, he should step down.'
Speaking from experience, Dr Mahathir recalled that he himself had resigned as PM because some quarters disliked him in stark contrast to PMX who is facing mounting pressure to step down.
On this note, the elderly stateman who helmed Malaysia for a total 22 years and 22 months quantified that there were so many mistakes made by Anwar, including 'failure to utilise the nation's wealth properly till many subsidies meant for the rakyat were withdrawn.'
In essence, Dr Mahathir who is now the PN adviser is confident that Malaysia would be better off with a change of government given this would overcome the various hardships, including poverty which Malaysians should not be subject to. – July 18, 2025

Japan's Ishiba calls for debate on pros and cons of sales tax cut

TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Monday stressed the need to establish a common understanding among parties on the pros and cons of cutting the country's sales tax rate. Cutting the sales tax could increase household income temporarily, but would raise questions on how to pay for Japan's ballooning social welfare and pension costs, Ishiba told a news conference. "There needs to be a common understanding over the facts" on the pros and cons of a sales tax cut, Ishiba said. "Just looking at one side of the debate won't do," he added. Ishiba spoke after vowing to remain in office despite his ruling coalition's defeat in upper house elections, which analysts blame in part on voters' frustration over rising living costs. The premier has repeatedly brushed aside calls from opposition parties to cut Japan's sales tax rate, currently set at 10 per cent except for an eight per cent levy on food products. In the news conference, Ishiba urged other parties to join discussions on how to cushion the blow from rising inflation, while being mindful of the responsibility to keep Japan's fiscal house in order.

#SHOWBIZ: Syed Saddiq pledges all modelling earnings to Muar constituents

KUALA LUMPUR: Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has reaffirmed his commitment to donating every single penny earned from his work as a model or campaign ambassador directly to support the welfare of his constituents. In a news report yesterday, the 32-year-old politician shared that he carefully reviews every offer he receives, especially contracts involving collaborations with various parties. "Every single sen earned through these contracts is channelled entirely towards the welfare of the Muar community," he said in the report. "Whatever the endeavour, I undertake this with a clear intention, and that is for the people's well-being. That's my main focus." He added that when deals are secured through agencies, there are often restrictions, such as being unable to publicly disclose that all proceeds go to Muar, though the aid still reaches his constituency. "I always go through every agreement in detail before agreeing. Sometimes, brands that work through agencies don't allow public announcements, but if they do agree, we still convey what kind of aid is being provided," he said. Syed Saddiq also admitted to receiving numerous offers from various companies but remains selective, often declining those he deems inappropriate. "I've turned down many offers due to poor quality. I believe we must protect our image. As a policymaker myself, quality must always come first for the benefit of Malaysians," he said. In March, the former Youth and Sports Minister donated his entire RM1.36 million earnings from a modelling campaign — in which he appeared alongside actress Bella Astillah — to residents in Muar. This move came after he revealed that government allocations for his constituency had been delayed. Syed Saddiq's popularity has surged since his appearance with Bella in a festive clothing campaign, making him a sought-after ambassador for many brands.

Include financial literacy in school curriculum, says Puchong MP

KUALA LUMPUR: Puchong Member of Parliament Yeo Bee Yin has proposed that financial literacy be included in the school curriculum. She said children and teenagers need to be taught about money management, credit and investment. "I believe that financial literacy is a vital life skill that should be given greater emphasis in the school curriculum. "Hence, I am suggesting that the Finance Ministry collaborate with the Education Ministry to integrate this crucial life skill into the school curriculum," she said when debating the Consumer Credit Bill 2025 in Dewan Rakyat today. In addition, Yeo said a nationwide public awareness campaign should be launched. "The government as a whole must work to improve the financial well-being of the Malaysians. It is not just about knowing what credit options are available, but also about knowing how to manage one's income. "For example, what percentage should be spent, saved or invested? I urge Bank Negara and the relevant ministries to launch a large-scale campaign to promote financial literacy among the public," she said. Earlier, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying tabled the Consumer Credit Bill 2025 for its second reading. Twenty-three members of parliament are expected to take part in the debate. The Consumer Credit Bill 2025 aims to strengthen consumer protection by regulating the credit industry in Malaysia, including overseeing the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) scheme.
