Why sportsbooks will be ‘pulling against the Lakers' and Luka Doncic in the NBA Playoffs

New York Times17-04-2025
With the NBA Playoffs tipping off on Saturday, one team stands out as the most popular NBA title wager at every sportsbook. Is it the defending champion Boston Celtics, who racked up 60-win campaigns in consecutive years? Or the Oklahoma City Thunder, who became the seventh team in history to reach 68 wins in a regular season?

Not quite. That distinction belongs to the 50-32 Los Angeles Lakers.
'They're always going to be one of the top NBA teams bet with us, just like the Yankees [are for MLB] and Cowboys [are for NFL],' said Hal Egeland, trading strategy manager at BetMGM. 'Between LeBron James and the Lakers, those are two of the biggest fan bases in the NBA. But once the Luka [Dončić] trade happened, that Lakers action was supercharged. Adding to the excitement level with someone like Luka, it just became a perfect storm.'
The Lakers opened at +2500 (bet $100 to win $2500) to win the 2025 NBA championship at BetMGM and were up at +4000 before one of the most shocking moves in recent sports history.
BetMGM immediately moved the Lakers' title odds to +1800 after the Dončić-Anthony Davis trade was first reported on Feb. 2. That number went down as low as +700 after a $100,000 wager came in on the Lakers at +1000 for a potential win of $1 million. Now, Los Angeles sits at +1100 — only behind the Thunder (+175), Celtics (+220) and Cleveland Cavaliers (+600) ahead of the NBA playoffs.
Among all NBA championship wagers placed at BetMGM, the Lakers are tops with both 15.9 percent of the bets and 15.4 percent of the money. It's the same story at other sportsbooks as well. ESPN BET is reporting 17 percent of the bets and 19.5 percent of the money coming in on Los Angeles to win it all.
'In terms of liability, it's the Lakers and then everyone else,' said Adrian Horton, Director of North American Sports Trading at ESPN BET. 'They were attracting interest over the first half of the season, but it's really kicked into high gear since the Luka trade, as nearly a third of all NBA champion money has been on LA. As the team continues to perform and the betting public continues to back them, we'll be pulling against the Lakers in just about every playoff scenario.'
But what did Lakers title betting action look like ahead of the blockbuster trade, and how does it compare to what it's been since Luka donned the purple and gold?
According to Pikkit, an app that allows sports bettors to sync their sportsbook accounts, the Lakers were sixth among all teams in both bets (3 percent) and money (2 percent) on NBA title bets tracked from when the market was first posted on June 18 all the way to Feb. 1.
From Feb. 2 to now, Los Angeles has captured 30 percent of all bets and 35 percent of all money among all NBA title bets tracked by Pikkit. There have actually been more Lakers title bets tracked at Pikkit in that span of 10-plus weeks than any other team has received in the entire 10 months that NBA championship odds have been up.

'Whenever a major player goes to a new team, we'll see immediate action on that new team,' said Johnny Avello, race and sports operations director at DraftKings. 'It happens all the time, even outside of the NBA. When the Mets got Juan Soto, we saw a bunch of action on the Mets. The Luka trade was even more so since there wasn't a whole lot going on, and it became the focal point of the week.'
Hard Rock Bet told The Athletic that since the Dončić trade, the sportsbook has seen an average of 66.7 percent more bets on Lakers games compared to when Anthony Davis was still on the team. Additionally, at Hard Rock Bet, the Lakers have collected the most bets and money to win the Western Conference, and the Lakers over the Celtics is the most popular NBA Finals exacta wager.
'Luka to the Lakers changed everything,' said Neil Walsh, Hard Rock Bet's SVP-Sportsbook. 'Since then, we've seen incredible enthusiasm for the Lakers across the board and LA is now our most popular selection to win the title by any measure — and it isn't even close.'
It hasn't been just bets on Los Angeles to win the championship that sportsbooks have been seeing. BetMGM opened the Lakers as -160 favorites to win their first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. That price is up to -200 thanks to 98 percent of the money coming in on Los Angeles, which Egeland called 'easily the most lopsided action' of any playoff series.
'The Lakers and Warriors are the biggest liabilities to win the NBA championship,' Christian Cipollini, BetMGM trading manager, told The Athletic. 'As a result, the sportsbook gets to cheer for the Thunder and Celtics, both favorites to win their respective conferences.'

Where Boston Celtics alumni are signing overseas

With more of the month of August behind us than in front, the 2025 NBA offseason is most of the way over. But there are still a few more weeks left in this month, with September and most of October ahead of us. With that much time having passed since the end of the last season, most players have found their home for the coming campaign ahead. Among them are a number of Boston Celtics alumni, latching on to ball clubs in other leagues when an NBA home is not in the cards at their respective stages of their careers. Keeping track of all the former Boston players still suiting up but not in the Association can be a hard row to hoe, but our sister site put together a list of overseas signings we're leaning on to help make that task easier. Let's take a look at where the wider Celtics diaspora is landing for the season soon to arrive. Evan Fournier - Olympiacos - Extended until 2027-28 Lamar Stevens - Paris Basketball - Signed for 2025-26 Ben Bentil - Mersin MSK - Signed for 2025-26 Mfiondu Kabengele - BC Dubai - Signed until 2026-27 Oshae Brissett - Maccabi Tel Aviv - Signed until 2026-27 Carsen Edwards - Virtus Bologna - Signed for 2025-26 Ante Zizic - Besiktas JK - Signed for 2025-26 Brodric Thomas - Fighting Eagles Nagoya - Signed for 2025-26 Juwan Morgan - KK Buducnost - Re-signed for 2025-26 Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:

Jazz coach says key to Ace Bailey's rookie season is his 'building a routine'

It was hard to get much of a read on No. 5 pick Ace Bailey at the Salt Lake City Summer League because he played in just two games due to a hip injury (he did not play in Las Vegas). After struggling in his initial outing, Bailey looked better in his second game. Bailey is going to get plenty of chances with the Jazz this season, the ball will be in his hands. What will be the key to his success and, more importantly, growth as a rookie? Developing a routine, Jazz coach Will Hardy told Andy Larson of the Salt Lake Tribune. "For Ace, first and foremost, it's going to be about building a routine. The NBA is a lot. The number of appearances is far more than he used to. That's practice, shootaround, games, but it's going to be about sort of him finding his routine, because I think the routine saves you during the season, you don't have to think that much." This is where having veterans on the roster, such as Georges Niang, Kyle Anderson, and Lauri Markkanen, is beneficial for Bailey — he can see firsthand how experienced players who have stuck and thrived in the league prepare themselves physically and mentally for the grind of the NBA season. Having mentors matters. My main positive takeaway from Summer League for Bailey was that he showed improvement between his two games, although Hardy noted he saw more things he liked. "I think Ace showed he was really active in Summer League. He's a good cutter. He can play in off-ball screens. And then defensively, while his body is continuing to get stronger, it's going to be about using his length, because I think that is a real strength of his right now. I think that's how he can survive on the defensive end right now." Utah has enough talent on the roster to be respectable this season — although every one of those veterans mentioned above is available via trade — but the Jazz are rebuilding and this is a team that is looking for its star to build around. While Jazz fans may be looking ahead to the upcoming draft that player, Bailey will get a chance this season to show he can be that guy.

Raptors extend Bobby Webster as GM, not replacing Masai Ujiri's role as president for time being

The Toronto Raptors announced they have extended Bobby Webster's contract as general manager and will not replace Masai Ujiri as president for the time being. Webster has been with the club since 2013. The president position became open the day after the draft in June, when Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the Raptors along with other teams and properties in Toronto, announced the firing of Ujiri. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley said Webster would be a candidate to take over the president's job on the day of the firing, but the club also partnered with CAA Executive Search to look for its next leader. Advertisement While other candidates, such as former Golden State Warriors president and general manager Bob Myers, Indiana Pacers president Kevin Pritchard and former Raptors coach Dwane Casey emerged, Webster, 40, was always the favorite for the job. Webster was already doing much of the daily work while Ujiri was still in place, and is generally respected around the NBA for his dealmaking and knowledge of the league's collective bargaining agreement. For now, the position will go unfilled. 'Going through this comprehensive process this summer and meeting with external candidates played a critical role in arriving at this decision as it made clear that we already have the right person leading the Raptors in-house,' Pelley said in a team statement. 'When we weighed the many considerations, including roster construction, team culture and competitive landscape, it made perfect sense to officially hand the team to Bobby and give him the time and support to allow his plan to develop. 'After spending time together this summer in Las Vegas, I was very impressed by Bobby's leadership style, his rapport with the players and staff, his reputation with his peers across the league and — especially and importantly — his vision for the Raptors. This team is his, now, to lead and I know we all look forward to what comes next.' Webster came to the Raptors as vice president of basketball management and strategy, with Ujiri hiring him away from the league to become his third in command. He became general manager in 2017, when Jeff Weltman left the Raptors to become the president of the Orlando Magic. When Ujiri was let go, Pelley made it a point to say Webster would remain in place and provide stability for the organization throughout the offseason. The Raptors hired Ujiri as president the year after he was named Executive of the Year with the Denver Nuggets, and he went on to lead the Raptors to a playoff berth in each of his first seven years on the job, including the team's lone championship in 2019. He became one of the highest-paid executives in 2021, a negotiation that upset Edward Rogers, the executive chair of Rogers Communications, then a minority partner in MLSE, which became the majority owner of the organization earlier this year. While Ujiri consistently downplayed the friction in his relationship with Rogers, the idea that Ujiri would stay in place well into the ownership change seemed unlikely. Spot the pattern.
