Sean McVay reveals what Matthew Stafford's workouts are, from 'static throwing' to walking
As the Los Angeles Rams wrap up training camp and the preseason approaches, quarterback Matthew Stafford remains sidelined from practice due to back soreness.
While the veteran quarterback, who is gearing up for his 17th season, continues to stay active in a controlled but individualized capacity, Stafford will not take part in Monday's jog through, according to head coach Sean McVay, and will instead have a separate workout session.
McVay was asked Sunday what's involved in Stafford's individual workouts and while he deferred to head trainer Reggie Scott for specifics, he did shed some light on what the quarterback has been doing.
'It's really just static throwing," McVay said. "It's some of the unloaded running on the treadmill. Sometimes it might even be walking. He's able to do a little bit of lighter cardio and able to do some good core work. But it's more just functional strength surrounding the area while making sure that you don't do anything to set yourself back based on the trajectory that he's doing. But we are looking forward to getting him and easing him back into football hopefully in the near future.'
The team continues to emphasize the health of its Pro Bowl quarterback by taking cautious measures, focusing on strengthening the right areas without pushing the 37-year-old too hard.
Los Angeles hopes to have Stafford as healthy as possible and on track for its season opener on September 7 at home against the Houston Texans. Stafford has been a focal point of the Rams' offense since he arrived in 2021 via trade, helping guide the team to a Super Bowl title in his inaugural season and back-to-back playoff appearances over the past two years.
The Rams will hold their first joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on August 5, followed by a preseason matchup between the two teams on August 9. Earlier this weekend, McVay wasn't too optimistic about his quarterback's chances for this week against a live opponent.
'The Cowboys, no,' McVay said Saturday. 'The Cowboys, I would say that's less than likely. With the Chargers, and I know I'm probably irritating you guys, but it truly is a week-to-week thing and what I don't want to do is set a timeline. I know he's making good progress, saw Dr. Watkins again today. Everything is in good shape. But to answer your question, the Cowboys is a no and then we'll see about the Chargers.'
While no timeline has been set for his return, the Rams continue to play it safe as the season approaches.

Chargers land Terry McLaurin on the cheap in most recent trade prediction
Chargers land Terry McLaurin on the cheap in most recent trade prediction originally appeared on The Sporting News Training camps are in full swing all over the NFL, but as is often the case this time of year, the players who aren't in camp due to a disagreement over how much money they're making are dominating the headlines. Such is the case in the nation's capital, where Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is at odds with the front office and is searching for a new deal. Though McLaurin has clearly outperformed his contract and has been one of the few bright spots in Washington for years before they broke out in a big way last year, the front office is standing pat... for now. That has led to McLaurin requesting a trade and setting off a myriad of ideas around the NFL media world as to which team could make a move for him. Washington would be taking a great risk by not paying him and conceding to his trade request, but if that happens, several teams would jump on the Pro Bowl wide receiver for the right deal. The Los Angeles Chargers have been connected to those trade ideas all offseason, and now a new one has come up in which the AFC West team would make out quite well. Recently, Daniel Popper of the The Athletic put together a list of potential trade partners for McLaurin and what the team would have to give up to get a deal done. He has the Chargers acquiring him for a fourth-round pick in 2026. Yes, that's it. "The Chargers are still figuring out who is going to play on the outside alongside star slot Ladd McConkey in three-receiver packages. They have Quentin Johnston and two ascending rookies in Tre' Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, but that group is unproven. The Chargers signed Mike Williams as a veteran option in March. Williams, though, retired before training camp. McLaurin would check a number of boxes for the Chargers offense. He played more than 83 percent of his snaps on the outside for Washington in 2024. He was elite in contested-catch situations, a skill the Chargers are seeking. The Chargers have the cap space to take on McLaurin's salary for this season. They are also projected to have the second-most cap space in the league in 2026, according to Over the Cap. Their top five receivers — McConkey, Johnston, Harris, Lambert-Smith and Derius Davis — are all on rookie deals. They could afford a more expensive veteran contract in this room from a cap perspective. The Chargers would have to do a deal with McLaurin after trading for him. Would he be open to something more short-term? A two-year extension at $30 million in AAV could make sense for both sides", wrote Popper. The Chargers need more help at wide receiver, and that has been documented all offseason. To get McLaurin for a fourth-round pick would be a steal. Yes, they would need to sign him to the extension that Washington is not giving him, but the team has the cap space available to do that. That has also been well documented. READ:Chargers backup QB may be trade bait for NFC South team The Chargers are a team rising into contention with the money available to make at least one deal that significantly pushes the envelope before the season kicks off. For those reasons, they will continue to be mentioned in potential blockbusters such as this one. But to get a top-flight wide receiver for a day-three draft pick is one that the front office could not pass up on. MORE CHARGERS CONTENT Chargers' Brenden Rice shows that he shouldn't be completely dismissed just yet Chargers' may not be able to count on 2024 third-round pick when they need him most Antonio Gates becomes a Hall of Fame first that may never be equaled Chargers acquire Micah Parsons in proposed deal that sends Cowboys Najee Harris Trey Lance has potentially career-altering performance in Hall of Fame Game

Falcons Recap: Rookie gets in practice brawl, Raheem Morris goes viral
In our latest recap, Kaleb McGary gets an extension, James Pearce Jr. gets in a practice brawl, and Raheem Morris' fall goes viral. The Atlanta Falcons held their sixth open practice on Monday morning, and fans got to see the team's full slate of rookies. First-round pick Jalon Walker and third-rounder Xavier Watts returned after being restricted to individual drills over the last few days. In today's Falcons news recap, Michael Penix Jr. is compared to Super Bowl quarterback Matthew Stafford, right tackle Kaleb McGary gets a contract extension, and rookie James Pearce Jr. gets in another practice brawl. Rookie James Pearce Jr. in another practice scuffle Pearce has done a good job of getting under the skin of Atlanta's offensive line throughout training camp. The rookie was involved in two practice skirmishes last week. On Monday, Pearce was in the middle of another practice scuffle. Head coach Raheem Morris took the rookie out for the next rep to cool down. "James Pearce Jr in the middle of it," wrote 11Alive News reporter Maria Martin. "Raheem Morris got in his face after. Tyrone Wheatley and JPJ chirping at each other for a while after. [It] looked like JPJ grabbed a face mask at some point. He was taken out of the next rep." Falcons OC thinks Penix has Stafford-like traits Penix has one of the strongest arms in the league, and it was on display during a rainy Monday practice. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson told NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe that Penix reminds him of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. "I talked to their offensive coordinator, Zac Robinson," said Wolfe. "Robinson was with Matt Stafford with the Rams. He said '[Penix] processes like Matthew Stafford.'" Kaleb McGary signs two-year extension After losing Drew Dalman in free agency, the Falcons weren't about to let right tackle Kaleb McGary get away so easily. The team signed the former first-round pick to a two-year, $30 million extension on Monday afternoon. McGary has been durable for Atlanta, starting 92 games over the last six seasons. The extension is also good news for left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr. since his blind-side protector is locked up through 2027. Raheem Morris' fall vs. Drake London goes viral Morris knows how to fire up his team, but he may regret his latest tactic. During Monday's practice, the second-year Falcons head coach took a rep against wide receiver Drake London and it went south fast. Morris attempted to press London at the line of scrimmage but was quickly disposed of by the former first-round pick. Watch the viral clip below. Falcons camp highlights: Best of Monday's practice

Browns Sign Pro Bowl QB After Injuries to Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Four quarterbacks apparently wasn't enough for the Cleveland Browns. The team announced its first depth chart of training camp on Monday with Joe Flacco leading a group that also features (in order) Kenny Pickett, rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel and rookie fifth-rounder Shedeur Sanders. However, there's one player not listed on there who has the potential to shake things up. Hours after the Browns' depth chart was released, the team signed former Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Sources: Browns are signing QB Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley, who spent part of last season with Cleveland," Schefter wrote on X. "With Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel nursing hamstring injuries, and Shedeur Sanders having a sore shoulder, the Browns need another arm. Enter Huntley." The news comes after three of the team's QBs are set to miss varying amounts of time with differing injuries. Shedeur Sanders #12 and Dillon Gabriel #5 of the Cleveland Browns throw passes during Cleveland Browns mandatory minicamp at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus on June 11, 2025 in Berea, 27-year-old Huntley spent time with the Browns last season, signing in late March but he was cut on Aug. 29 despite making the 53-man roster after he received little to no trade interest. In five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins, Huntley has passed for 2,786 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a record of 5-9 as a starter. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 after winning two of his four starts as Lamar Jackson's backup in Baltimore. Tyler Huntley #18 of the Miami Dolphins warms up before the game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on January 05, 2025 in East Rutherford, New has been battling self-reported shoulder soreness. He was held out of practice on Saturday after the issue arose, and Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot provided a little more clarity on the extent of his prognosis. "The fact that he self-reported the soreness is significant, because he's still involved in the four-way competition for the starting job, and wouldn't miss a snap unless he absolutely had to," Cabot wrote. Conversely, Gabriel joined Cleveland's injury report on Monday. He was a limited participant in practice with hamstring tightness. Pickett, who many believed was a serious threat to Flacco for the starting job, had been out with a hamstring injury for a few days but returned to practice on Monday as a limited participant. More NFL: Ex-Raiders Coach Jon Gruden Hints a Coaching Comeback Is in the Works Prior to missing time, Pickett impressed head coach Kevin Stefanski and other Browns coaches with his mobility and some of his decision-making ability in the first block of camp. "Obviously disappointed that he's not full go, but he's very much involved in everything we're doing," Stefanski said, via the team's official website. "He's a player that has had a good amount of NFL game exposure. "He's had a lot of reps going back through the spring and what we've gotten accomplished so far through training camp. You don't want anybody to be missing action due to any injury, but he has done a nice job of staying very much engaged."
