An 11-year-old Class 5 student allegedly poured pesticide into the drinking water tank of his government school in Karnataka's Shimoga district after his classmates refused to follow his instructions. The incident took place in Hoovinakone village in Hosanagara taluk. According to police, the student brought pesticide used for ginger crops from his home and secretly poured it into the school's drinking water tank. Two classmates who saw him in the act were reportedly threatened into silence.advertisementThe contamination was detected just before lunch, when the school staff noticed a foul smell and abnormal colour in the water while preparing midday meals. Authorities immediately stopped using the water and ensured no student consumed it.
Police said the boy, who was the school's 'chief minister' (student leader), had become upset because his classmates weren't listening to him. He had allegedly taken inspiration from a previous incident at the same school where a Class 2 student mixed phenol from the bathroom into a classmate's water bottle. The boy has been apprehended and is being dealt with under the Juvenile Justice Act. Police confirmed he acted alone and wasn't influenced by anyone else. Before it was known that the minor was behind the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had written on X- 'It is my sentiment that this act, with the malicious intent of causing a massacre of dozens of young children, is no less than any terrorist act. Due to the timely awareness of the kitchen staff, a major tragedy that could have occurred has been averted. I congratulate the school's kitchen staff.'- EndsTune InMust Watch

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah orders probe into Rahul Gandhi's ‘vote theft' allegations ahead of BBMP Polls

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the state's Law Department to investigate allegations of vote rigging in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, following Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's explosive claims of 'choreographed' polls to favour the BJP. The probe, Siddaramaiah said, will be completed before the upcoming Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah. 'Legal action will be taken based on the recommendations,' he assured. The move comes a day after Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, alleged massive electoral malpractice in Karnataka's Mahadevapura constituency. At an August 7 press conference, Gandhi claimed that the BJP's Lok Sabha victory in the state was aided by 'vote theft' involving over 1,00,000 votes. Citing Congress's internal analysis, he said the party had expected to win 16 seats in Karnataka but secured only nine. Seven 'unexpected' defeats were examined, with Mahadevapura flagged as the most glaring case. 'The BJP's margin in the Lok Sabha seat was 32,707, but this one segment changed the entire result,' he alleged. Karnataka Minister G. Parameshwara also announced that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will file a formal complaint with the State Election Commission, while Rahul Gandhi will take the matter up with the Central Election Commission. 'There is a difference in the voter list, and the commission must accept this,' Parameshwara insisted, adding that the EC has sought documents on the allegations. (With PTI inputs)

First-Year Student Brutally Ragged In Andhra Pradesh Hostel, Assault Caught On Video

New Delhi: A disturbing ragging incident has come to light from a boys' hostel in the Dachepalli area of Palnadu district, Andhra Pradesh. A group of senior students allegedly assaulted a first-year intermediate student in a brutal and inhumane manner. The assault took place on August 7 but only came to public attention recently after a video of the attack surfaced online. In the purported video, five second-year students, all minors, are seen surrounding the victim and physically assaulting him and beating him with sticks. The accused did not let go, no matter how much the victim tried. According to local media reports, the victim was taken to the hostel by the accused seniors, where he was tortured and threatened with death. Shockingly, an outsider, not affiliated with the college, also assisted in the attack. The video, now viral on social media, shows the victim being slapped multiple times by the group. He is seen sitting on the floor, visibly distressed, while one of the boys sits in front of him on a chair. Another boy kicks him. A particularly horrifying moment in the video shows one of the accused bringing what appears to be a live wire, as the victim pleads not to be shocked. Local media reports confirm that the group gave the victim electric shocks and continued to beat him, while filming the act and issuing threats. Despite his resistance, the boy was overpowered and subjected to relentless abuse. The victim's parents have filed a formal complaint with the local police, the reports stated. However, they have expressed disappointment over the authorities' slow response and lack of immediate action. Police have now registered a case and launched an investigation. Given that all the accused are minors, the legal process will follow provisions under the Juvenile Justice Act. The role of the outsider involved is also being examined. Meanwhile, the incident has triggered protests from various student associations, demanding swift action and strict enforcement of anti-ragging measures. There has been no immediate statement from the college administration regarding the matter. The case has raised serious concerns over student safety and hostel supervision.
