Should we go against Constitution? Poll body defends Bihar voter list revision

The Election Commission, on Thursday, again defended the revision of voter rolls in election-bound Bihar and its timing even as protests continued both inside the Parliament and the Bihar Assembly and outside. The election body asserted that a purified voters' list undertaken as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is the foundation of free and fair elections and strong its latest statement, the Commission raised two questions regarding the controversy: whether the poll body should go against the Constitution merely to appease those opposing the move, and whether the step is essential to ensure fair elections.'So, should the Election Commission -- out of fear of such matters and swayed by such people -- go against the Constitution and clear the path first in Bihar and then across the country for fraudulent voting in the name of dead voters, permanently migrated voters, voters registered in two places, fake voters, or even foreign voters?,' the statement read. It asked further, "Isn't the purified voter list being prepared through a transparent process by the Election Commission the foundation for fair elections and a strong democracy?", adding, "At some point, all of us -- all citizens of India -- must come together, rise above political ideologies, and deeply reflect on these crucial questions".The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar has sparked a significant controversy, primarily due to concerns about large-scale deletions and potential disenfranchisement ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. While the Election Commission says the process is aimed at weeding out ineligible persons, the Opposition calls it a "conspiracy" by the BJP to manipulate voter data and exclude a significant portion of their traditional voter base, especially from marginalised sections and minority Tuesday, the Commission said that 52 lakh names have been removed from the electoral rolls so far, including 18 lakh voters reported dead, 26 lakh who have moved to other constituencies and 7 lakh who are registered in more than one controversy has escalated into protests in Parliament since the Monsoon Session began three days ago, with the Opposition insisting on a debate on the matter. The Chair's refusal to allow a discussion has triggered massive uproar in both the Houses, resulting in frequent adjournments and walkouts. Most recently, the Lok Sabha was adjourned on Thursday just minutes after it process has also faced a legal challenge in the Supreme Court, which, while allowing the revision to continue, questioned its timing. The court directed the Election Commission to consider Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration cards as valid identity documents in addition to the existing list.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Bihar#Bihar Assembly Elections
