Former Red Sox Star Xander Bogaerts Faces Backlash Amid Struggles
Former Red Sox Star Xander Bogaerts Faces Backlash Amid Struggles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox may have dodged a bullet by not signing Xander Bogaerts to an extension after the 2022 season. The current San Diego Padres' shortstop now has fans calling for his demotion after a brutal start to this season. Advertisement San Diego signed Bogaerts to a deal worth $280 million over 11 years, and the contract has looked increasingly worse as time has gone on. He was expected to be continue as one of the best shortstops in the baseball, but his play has gradually declined in every major category since he joined the team. Bogaerts has hit just .227 this season, with mediocre OPS of just .615 and a WAR of 0.3. It is by far the former Red Sox superstar's worst season since his first full year as an MLB starter. One popular podcast of Padres fans posted this on X, "Losing words to describe Xander Bogaerts. Legit DFA candidate and he's got 8.5 years left," said Devine Sports Gospel. Plenty of other San Diego fans have also been getting on the bandwagon of frustration with Bogaerts, which has become a popular topic of late. Advertisement This is a fall from grace for Bogaerts, who played very well in his first year with the Padres back in 2023. That season he had a .285 batting average with 19 homers and a solid .790 OPS. It was arguably his worst season since 2017, but still a very good year for most hitters. There was a drop-off last season, where Bogaerts slashed a .264 average, .307 on base percentage, and .381 slugging percentage. San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (2) between innings against the Atlanta Braves in the first inning at Truist Davis-Imagn Images The fall off since 2022 and even 2023 has become jarring, but there is still some hope in store for Padres fans. Bogaerts has walked 29 times to date and is on pace for this season to be his second most career walks, while he has struck out just 50 times across 71 games. Advertisement That means the 32-year-old is having a strong approach at the plate, even if the hits are not coming. It does not mean he will return to his 2022 form with the Red Sox, a .307 AVG with an .833 OPS, but there may still be hope for results closer to 2023 or 2024. Bogaerts is now a possible trade candidate, but with a contract that big the Padres may just have to wait it out. Kasatkina will hope to make BJK Cup bow in Tasmania
Australia will host a Billie Jean King Cup tie in Tasmania in November with Daria Kasatkina hoping she'll be cleared to be in contention to make her debut for her adopted country in the World Cup of women's tennis. The draw for the play-offs was made in London on Thursday when it was revealed that Sam Stosur's Australia team will host a three-pronged play-off tie against Brazil and Portugal in Hobart between November 14 and 16. When Kasatkina, the new Australian No.1 after gaining permanent residence in March, was asked about her ambitions of competing in the BJK Cup having previously competed for her native Russia, she talked of her enthusiasm about making a green-and-gold debut. Hobart x @BJKCup 🇦🇺 Australia🇧🇷 Brazil🇵🇹 Portugal14-16 November, Domain Tennis Centre - Stay tuned for more 👀 — TennisAustralia (@TennisAustralia) June 19, 2025 But talking at Roland Garros, she admitted it was still unclear when and if she would get clearance to play. "Talking about the Billie Jean King Cup, that process is more complicated, which is not depending on me," she told reporters. "It's something which Tennis Australia has to deal with the ITF (International Tennis Federation organisers). This is where it's already different language. I'm not going to be the part of it. This is where the Federation has to deal with the ITF." If she does get clearance and is selected, the Australian team would be strong favourites to top their three-team round-robin group at Hobart's Domain Tennis Centre against two teams who don't have the same strength-in-depth to call on. Even without Kasatkina, the world No.16, Stosur has rising teenager star Maya Joint (No.52), Ajla Tomljanovic (No.66) and Kim Birrell (No.79) to choose from in the top 100, while Olivia Gadecki is 104. Ellen Perez is the 16th-ranked doubles player in the world. In contrast, Brazil have only one stand-out player in the shape of 21st-ranked Beatriz Haddad Maia, with their next two on the WTA computer being the No.219 Laura Pigossi and No.240 Carolina Alves. The Portuguese team will be the rank outsiders with their hopes resting on two sisters, 21-year-old Matilde Jorge (No.251) and her 25-year-old sibling Francisca, who's at 259. Stosur's team will be hoping to get back among the elite next year by winning their November tie after failing to reach this season's week-long final which will be held in Shenzhen, China, in September. Play-offs draw: Group A: (Monterrey, Mexico): Canada, Mexico, Denmark Group B: (Gorzow Wielkopolski, Poland): Poland, Romania, New Zealand Group C: (Cordoba, Argentina): Slovakia, Switzerland, Argentina Group D: (Varazdin, Croatia): Czech Republic, Colombia, Croatia Group E: (Hobart, Australia): Australia, Brazil, Portugal Group F: (Ismaning, Germany): Germany, Belgium, Turkey Group G: (Bengaluru, India): Netherlands, Slovenia, India

Bills' 2025 'To-Do List' Revealed
Bills' 2025 'To-Do List' Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mid-June marks the quiet portion of the NFL offseason. OTAs and mandatory minicamps are over, and players are off until the start of training camps. Advertisement But, that doesn't mean coaches and general managers are exactly putting their feet up, waiting for action to happen. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox compiled a "to-do list" for each NFL team for the remainder of the offseason, and the Buffalo Bills' list has some intriguing options. First and foremost, Knox wants the Bills to end the contract dilemma with running back James Cook, and pay him. "The Buffalo Bills were only a few plays away from reaching the Super Bowl in January, so much of the offseason has been about maintaining continuity." Knox wrote. "Ascending running back James Cook should be considered a long-term piece of the puzzle." Cook has spent the offseason being vocal about his desire for a new contract. Cook made a somewhat-surprising appearance at mandatory minicamp, which many expected him to skip out on and initiate a holdout until he got a new deal. Advertisement "While the Bills barely have any cap space remaining, general manager Brandon Beane should do what he can to extend Cook to ensure the backfield leader has no distractions in 2025." Knox wrote. Next on Knox's list is creating a plan for receiver Keon Coleman. Coleman was selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft, but his rookie season was underwhelming at best. Knox insists that Buffalo figure out how to unlock him. "Head coach Sean McDermott and offensive coordinator Joe Brady, meanwhile, need to set up a plan for second-year receiver Keon Coleman." Knox wrote. "The 2024 second-round pick was expected to become Josh Allen's new go-to wideout, but his rookie numbers (556 yards, 4 TDs) left plenty to be desired. It's imperative that the Bills figure out how to highlight Coleman's strengths and create a rapport between him and Allen." Last, but not least, Knox points to the safety position, writing the Bills should "examine safety options." Advertisement Knox cited analysis from fellow Bleacher Report writer Alex Ballentine, who wrote "Perhaps Cole Bishop will take on more responsibility in his second season, but the starting combo of Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp are the weak link of the defense as constructed." Knox noted there are a few veteran options still available in free agency, such as Justin Simmons, Marcus Williams and Chuck Clark.
