This one age-old remedy can fix dehydration
As summer temperatures soar, the risk of dehydration and sunstroke becomes very real. These heat-related issues can leave you feeling weak, dizzy, and even dangerously ill if not treated quickly.
While modern electrolyte drinks are popular, there's one age-old remedy that continues to stand the test of time: buttermilk, also known as chaas in India. Simple, natural, and highly effective, this traditional drink has long been used to beat the heat.
Natural Hydration
Buttermilk is a natural coolant made by mixing yogurt with water and a pinch of salt or spices. It helps replenish lost fluids and cools the body from within, making it an ideal drink for hot climates.
Unlike sugary sodas or commercial energy drinks, buttermilk hydrates without causing a sugar crash or artificial overload.
Rich in Electrolytes
When you sweat, your body loses electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which is essential for nerve function and muscle health. Buttermilk, especially when prepared with a pinch of rock salt, restores these vital minerals. It's particularly useful after prolonged sun exposure or physical activity, helping to balance your body's internal fluids quickly.

Soothes the Digestive System
One of buttermilk's hidden powers is its ability to calm the digestive tract. The probiotics from yogurt support gut health and can help ease nausea, a common symptom during sunstroke or dehydration. It also prevents bloating and heaviness that often come with heat exhaustion.
Cooling Effect on the Body
This humble drink has a natural cooling effect on the body, which helps regulate body temperature after being out in the sun.
Spices like cumin, mint, and ginger, often added to buttermilk, enhance its cooling and detoxifying properties. It's no wonder it's a staple in many tropical households during peak summer.
Easily Available
What makes buttermilk a truly remarkable remedy is its accessibility. All you need is yogurt and water—both commonly found in most homes. It's easy to make, affordable, and free from preservatives, making it a far healthier choice than many store-bought options.

Child labour can be curbed when rescued kids are educated: Mandya DC
Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara has emphasised that child labour can be curbed effectively only when rescued children are not just protected but also given sustained access to quality education. Speaking at a progress review meeting held at the deputy commissioner's office here on Tuesday, Kumara said, "It's not enough to rescue children from labour; we must ensure they stay in school and continue their education. Without follow-up, many may drop out again." The meeting was organised by the labour department under the provisions of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act. Kumara shared that the labour department enrolled 36 child labourers in school over the past three academic years: 10 in 2022–23, 20 in 2023–24, and 6 so far in 2024–25. He urged the education department to maintain updated records on these children and called on local education officers to closely monitor their academic performance and attendance. He noted that while raids to rescue child labourers are regularly conducted in urban establishments like bakeries and garages, similar vigilance is needed in rural areas, particularly in stone quarries, small-scale industries, and farms. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo World Day Against Child Labour Kumara said that the district will observe the World Day Against Child Labour on June 12, where workshops will be organised for hotel owners, quarry operators, and factory managers to raise awareness on the issue. Boyfriend kills woman, later dies by suicide in Chennai
T Abinaya and S Akash By Harine A S CHENNAI: A 19-year-old woman, a college student, was strangled by her boyfriend, also aged 19, who then died by suicide at a house they had rented in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Perambur, on Monday night, police said. The couple, T Abinaya and S Akash, were college mates in Villupuram's Arignar Anna Arts College and had come to Chennai a little over a week ago after telling their parents they were going to the city to take up part-time jobs to support their families. With a friend's help, Akash and Abinaya moved into the house in Chennai, claiming to be husband and wife. The incident came to light on Monday night after one of the neighbours saw the teenager hanging from the ceiling through a window. The neighbour alerted police, who broke the door open and found Abinaya lying on the floor with injuries on the neck and face. Both the bodies were taken to the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. Police suspect Akash and Abinaya quarrelled and he strangled her before ending his life. TOI spoke to Abinaya's family at KMCH, and they said they were unaware that she was staying with Akash in the city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'She told us that she was going to Chennai to work as a home nurse to support the family financially,' a family member said. However, Akash's brother, Tamizhmaaran, told police that both families knew about their relationship and that they opposed the couple's marriage. He said he was unable to contact them for the past two weeks.
