NBA approves US$6.1 billion sale of Boston Celtics
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Boston Celtics centre Kristaps Porzingis blocks a shot by New York Knicks centre Karl-Anthony Towns in last season's NBA play-offs. NEW YORK – The NBA on Aug 13 approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to an investment group led by Bill Chisholm, five months after the deal worth a then-record US$6.1 billion was agreed. 'The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the controlling interests in the Boston Celtics to an investor group led by Bill Chisholm,' the league said in a brief statement. 'The transaction is expected to close shortly.' Chisholm is the managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group. When he and his co-investors agreed to purchase the storied Celtics franchise 'at an initial valuation of US$6.1 billion', that was the highest ever offered for a North American sports team. It has since been surpassed by the US$10 billion sale, in June, of the Los Angeles Lakers by the Buss family to billionaire Mark Walter. When the Celtics sale was announced, it was stated that Wyc Grousbeck would continue in his roles of chief executive officer and governor, overseeing team operations through the 2027-28 season. The Grousbeck family and Steve Pagliuca purchased the Celtics for US$360 million in 2002. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Nevertheless, ESPN reported Chisholm and Grousbeck 'plan to run the team together as originally planned'. The Celtics are one of the most storied teams in the NBA's history, with a record 18 championships, the most recent in 2024. Besides them and the Lakers, Sportico and other US media also reported on Aug 13 that Tom Dundon, owner of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, has agreed to buy the Portland Trail Blazers at a valuation US$4.25 billion from the estate of Paul Allen. The Trail Blazers announced they were up for sale in May, with proceeds to go to philanthropic causes. Microsoft co-founder Allen died from cancer in 2018 and his will called for the Trail Blazers to be sold eventually. Allen's sister, Jody Allen, has been acting as the team's governor and executor of the Paul Allen Trust. Dundon, a billionaire financier, became majority owner of the NHL's Hurricanes in 2018 and completed the purchase of all minority shares in 2021 to become sole owner of the franchise. He leads a group purchasing the Trail Blazers that also includes Blue Own Capital president Marc Zahr and Tyle, who is founder and co-chief executive of investment firm Collective Global. US chip-gear maker sued in China over alleged trade secret theft
[TAIPEI] Top US chip-equipment supplier Applied Materials was sued by a rival in China over what that company characterised as trade secret theft, a further escalation in the technology war between the world's two largest economies. Beijing E-Town Semiconductor Technology filed a lawsuit with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court against Applied Materials, according to a company statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The Chinese chip-gear maker alleged that the Santa Clara, California-based company illegally obtained, used and revealed its core technologies related to the application of plasma source in treating the surface of wafers, the statement said. The court has filed the case but has not begun a trial, E-Town added. Applied Materials earlier hired two employees from E-Town's fully owned US subsidiary, Mattson, and they were privy to the Beijing company's proprietary plasma technologies, the filing said. Applied Materials filed a patent application crediting the duo as inventors with the National Intellectual Property Administration in China after the two joined the Santa Clara company, the Beijing firm said, alleging that the content revealed trade secrets co-owned by E-Town and Mattson. 'The patent application violated the rules of China's Anti-Unfair Competition Law, and it infringes on trade secrets, and has caused significant damage to the plaintiff's intellectual property and economic interests,' E-Town said in the filing, adding that Applied Materials is also suspected of marketing and selling the technologies involved in the case to Chinese customers. E-Town is asking the court to demand that Applied Materials stop using its trade secrets and destroy related materials. It's also seeking about 100 million yuan (S$18 million) in recompense for damage. The Beijing Intellectual Property Court did not answer multiple calls outside of regular hours. Applied Materials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Chip-gear technology is a focal point in the prolonged technology war between the US and China. To date, the semiconductor manufacturing equipment space is still dominated by the US, the Netherlands and Japan. A years-long US-led campaign has prevented Chinese companies from securing Dutch supplier ASML Holding's state-of-the-art extreme ultraviolet lithography systems, which are required to make the most cutting-edge chips for developing artificial intelligence algorithms. ASML's technologies also do not work at a chipmaking plant without support from US equipment suppliers, including Applied Materials and Lam Research. While E-Town's move might be seen as part of China's efforts to retaliate against the US, the two companies have their own existing dispute. In 2022, Applied Materials sued Mattson over alleged corporate espionage. Mattson denied any wrongdoing at the time. BLOOMBERG

A man in the Czech Republic rewrote his own national record after catching a 2.68m catfish in what he described as a 50-minute 'intense battle'. Mr Jakub Vagner, 43, caught the freshwater fish on Aug 2 at Vranov Reservoir, 200km south of the Czech capital Prague. Pictures on his social media accounts showed him with the massive catfish, which is slightly longer than the one he caught about 10 months ago. Mr Vagner, host of National Geographic Channel's Fish Warrior, spotted the fish in the early morning while he was on his boat. He then cast his custom-made rod towards the fish and waited. 'Ten minutes passed and nothing happened. Suddenly, it turned and went straight into my trap,' he told What's The Jam website. What followed was 'the hardest battle I have ever had with a catfish in the Czech Republic', he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
