16 BSF personnel get gallantry medals for Operation Sindoor
The paramilitary force is tasked with guarding the India-Pakistan border along the western flank of the country.
'This Independence Day, 16 Brave Seema Praharis (border guards) are being awarded Gallantry Medals for their conspicuous bravery & unmatched valour, for being resolute & steadfast during the Ops Sindoor.
'The medals are a testament to the Nation's faith & trust reposed in the India's First Line of Defence: The Border Security Force,' the BSF said in a social media post.
Among the medal winners are a deputy commandant rank officer, two assistant commandants and an inspector.
Under Operation Sindoor, India targeted terrorist and military facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir from May 7 to 10 in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed

Kochi: Putting internet users in the city at high risk, cybercriminals are using new tricks to spread APK files and hidden links through messaging apps. This revelation comes after city police busted a major racket that used fake m-Parivahan apps to commit fraud. Investigators said they recovered several similar applications from those arrested, indicating they were conducting multiple such scams. The cyber wing of city police was the first to make an arrest in the m-Parivahan fraud, despite hundreds of complaints being registered in various states where APK files disguised as the official app were being circulated through messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Phones of those who installed the apps were hacked, leading to severe monetary loss. "When we arrested them, we found an array of such APK files. One of them was for installing an app to engage in sex chats, which could then be used for extortion through honey-trapping. Very few victims would file complaints in such cases fearing shame. Another APK file was for bogus KYC updation," said an officer with the cyber wing. The moment someone downloads, data gets stolen. Sometimes they take control of the screen, while sometimes only messages. Many aim to take control of applications on the phone," he said. Fresh complaints in m-Parivahan style are becoming fewer while they are coming up with newer things, he added. Another city police officer said there was a surge in bogus links last week over Independence Day. "Since many e-commerce platforms provide offers during this period, scamsters took advantage. Links were sent with similar offers, luring people into sharing their personal details. Such links can be expected during Onam season. Another trend is sending links warning of private photos being online so that users are tempted to check it by clicking the attached link," said an officer. Vimaladitya said verifying such links remains the most effective safeguard against such scams. "It is very unlikely that an official body would send you important official communication through WhatsApp. Even if that happens, everything must be cross-checked — either by directly contacting the office concerned or by visiting authentic websites and writing to them for clarity. For example, If you search for a bank like Federal Bank on Google, fake website links might appear. Instead, search for the original Federal Bank URL, confirm its authenticity and then proceed. Wall collapse near Humayun's tomb: CCTV footage of nearby areas seized
Delhi Police officers said they have seized digital video recording systems from the neighbourhood of Patte Shah dargah near Humayun's Tomb in southeast Delhi where seven people were killed after a wall collapse on Friday. On Friday, the roof and walls of two rooms at Patte Shah Dargah collapsed allegedly due to heavy rains and waterlogging in the area, trapping 11 people in debris. On Saturday, police said the incident left seven people dead. The deceased were identified as Swaroop Chand, 79; Mohammad Moin, 37; Anita Saini, 50; Mohammad Arif, Mohammad Abid, Meena Arora and her daughter Monushca. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (southeast) Hemant Tiwari said an FIR under sections 290 (negligent act during demolition), 125 (endangering life due to negligent act) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was filed on Saturday against unidentified persons. 'We have also taken statements of eye witnesses and locals. Some alleged that the dargah rooms were in bad shape as there had been no renovation work done for the last 40-50 years. The walls had cracks while the base of the structure was weak due to waterlogging and soil eroding,' an officer part of the investigation said. While the shrine at the Patte Shah dargah is reported to be centuries old, police said the rooms of the dargah were built around 50-60 years back. 'The exact date is not known. We are also trying to access records from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The caretaker of the dargah and the Imam's family are already being questioned. We are verifying all allegations...' added the investigator. While MCD officials on Friday told HT that the dargah comes under ASI, the ASI had denied the claim. Mother-daughter among deceased had sought shelter in rain Among the seven deceased are 56-year-old Meena Arora and her 23-year-old daughter Monushca Arora. The family lives in Vasant Kunj area. Meena is survived by two daughters and a son. Saurabh Khanna, Meena's son-in-law, said, 'For the past few months, she has been visiting the gurudwara in Nizamuddin every Friday. It was Independence Day and Monushca was also free so they went together. They did not have a car or anything so they went inside the dargah to seek shelter as heavy rain started. We did not know this would happen. Everyone is in shock... Monushca was going to turn 24 next month.'

Dhemaji pays tribute to victims of 2004 Independence Day bomb blast

The ceremony, observed as Mourning Day (Shok Divas), held at the college's memorial park, saw attendees lighting diyas and offering prayers in memory of those who lost their lives in one of Assam 's darkest tragedies. The memorial park, where statues of the 13 victims stand, was adorned with flowers as attendees observed a moment of silence. About 22 years ago, on Aug 15, 2004, a remote-controlled bomb planted by the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) exploded near the college gate during Independence Day celebrations. The blast, which occurred around 8.50 am when students and teachers from various schools were entering the parade ground, claimed 13 lives — most of them schoolchildren aged between 12 and 14. Dhemaji DC Rahul Suresh Javir, SSP Hitesh Chandra Roy, Dhemaji development authority chairman Tulan Konwar, Dhemaji College principal Dipak Kumar Neog, faculty members, students and community members gathered to honour the victims. In his address, DC Javir called for unity against violence, stating, "We must uphold the spirit of non-violence and work collectively to eradicate terrorism. The innocent lives lost that day remind us of the need for peace and harmony in society. " Principal Neog recounted the tragedy while paying homage to the victims, whom he termed "martyrs of peace." "That fateful morning shattered countless families. Today, we remember not just their deaths, but their dreams that were never fulfilled," he said. Asst professor of history, Dhemaji College, Dolly Boruah emphasised the importance of educating future generations about the consequences of extremism. "Terrorism only brings suffering. We must teach our youth the value of peace. The 2004 Dhemaji blast remains a painful scar in Assam's history, a grim reminder of the cost of insurgency," she said. The ceremony saw participation from people of various faiths, who joined in prayers for the departed souls. A collective oath was taken to reject violence and stand united against terrorism.
