Teachers' body to stage state-wide protests today

The Hindu11-05-2025

The leaders of the AP United Teachers Federation (UTF) are gearing up for State-wide protests on Monday against the stand taken by the School Education Department on key issues like school reorganisation programme, teacher transfers and promotions.
The federation's state president N. Venkateswarlu and general secretary K.S.S. Prasad said: 'Sit-in protests would be staged at the offices of the District Education Officers (DEO) across the State.' They said that though the department officials had been holding talks with representatives of the recognised teacher unions every week, they were taking a unilateral stand on key issues and this could harm the school education system.
The UTF leaders criticised the previous government and said that the policies implemented were detrimental to the education sector, such as the merger of Classes 3 to 5 with high schools, the teacher re-apportionment process through GO 117, and reducing the teacher strength, which led to increased workloads. These measures ultimately led to the migration of 10 lakh students from government schools to private institutions.
The leaders alleged that the TDP-led coalition government had promised to repeal GO 117 and introduce new policies to strengthen the education sector, but it was following in the footsteps of its predecessor.
The proposal to upgrade 779 high schools and establish 9,652 model primary schools was welcomed. But they opposed the decision to allot a second teacher post to only high schools with a minimum strength of 54 students. They warned that the move would lead to thousands of surplus posts in high schools, especially those of Mathematics, English, and School Assistant teacher posts.
They raised concerns about the priority being given to establish model primary schools at the cost of foundation schools and basic primary schools, and called the move 'objectionable'.
They said: 'Monday's protest aims to draw attention to these critical issues that need to be resolved immediately. If the government failed to heed to our demands, then we would be forced to intensify our agitation and will stage a massive sit-in at the Vidya Bhavan on May 15.'

Railway convention raises alarm over rising accidents, urges govt action

Hubballi: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) president K Hemalatha said despite the alarming rate of accidents and the huge loss of lives, the Union govt is not showing any concern for protecting the lives of the people and staff who are crucial to the operation of the trains. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at a state-level convention on 'Safety in Railways', organised by the CITU, here on Sunday, Hemalatha stated that the BJP-led NDA govt failed to take effective measures to prevent train accidents. "Instead, govt is blaming the railway employees for these accidents and taking punitive action against them," she added. The number of train accidents, which was 21 in 2020-21, increased to 34 in 2021-22, 48 in 2022-23, and 81 in 2024-25. The Railway Minister informed Parliament in 2022 that 469 passengers were killed and 1,275 injured in train accidents during 2014-19. "The trains running in suburban areas are experiencing accidents too. Hundreds of track maintainers died. More than 450 trackmen died in . Rail travel, an affordable mode of travel used by more than 2 crore people every day, must be made safe," Hemalatha demanded. S Varalakshmi, Karnataka President, CITU, said to oppose the privatisation of railways and address the safety concerns of passengers and employees, the organisation is creating awareness. "Govt is casting a negative shadow on employment. Contract employment is increasing, and due to this, accidents are increasing. The employees are working overtime, which is leading to accidents. Every passenger should travel safely, and govt should provide this," she urged. General secretary Meenakshi Sundaram demanded that the Union govt should ensure the safety of railway passengers and provide safe working conditions for railway employees. "Govt should stop the privatisation of in any form and improve facilities for passengers on trains, with senior citizens receiving concessions like women and other demands," she said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "In Karnataka, eleven station division-level conferences should be completed by the end of July-August 2025. Cong seeks narco test of chief poll officer over ‘election fixing'

Mumbai: A day after leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged "match fixing" between and ECI, state Congress chief Harshawardhan Sapkal on Sunday demanded narco tests on chief electoral officer (CEO) S Chockalingam and then additional CEO Kiran Kulkarni to expose the truth in Maharashtra's "vote theft" in the 2024 assembly election. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sapkal said it is BJP and CM who have jumped in with rebuttals, instead of the election watchdog. Fadnavis had on Saturday called Rahul's allegations an outright lie and in an article published in a national newspaper and a Marathi daily on Sunday, he said the Congress MP has been repudiating the mandate given by the people, instead of introspecting on the defeat. Accusing Rahul of constantly "insulting" the democratic process, Fadnavis said he is preparing his excuses for future defeats in assembly polls, including in Bihar. Sapkal dubbed Fadnavis's reply as laughable and an evasive attempt to distract the public. He said Fadnavis and BJP-led Mahayuti alliance are the ones who directly benefited from the vote manipulation and are enjoying the spoils of power. Yet, he added, they are offering a defence. "Stop acting like a judicial icon. Your (Fadnavis's) governance resembles that of a corrupt police chief. His (the CM) responses are weak and superficial and fail to address the actual issues. " AICC general secretary Ramesh Chennithala said BJP's immediate response to the key issues raised by Rahul confirms the match fixing allegations. "If there was no rigging, why was the mock poll in Markadwadi (in Solapur district in Dec 2024) blocked?" he asked, adding that the stain on the assembly election must be wiped clean and ECI must offer a clarification to restore public trust in democracy. Chennithala said what happened in the assembly polls was not accidental but was a meticulously planned operation that hijacked the election for securing power. In response to Rahul's allegations of poll rigging, Chockalingam said such charges were not expected from a leader of a political party like Congress, "that too on officers whose only loyalty is to the Constitution and the people".
