Man charged with DUI, reckless homicide in crash that killed 5-year-old son in Lake County, Illinois
Lake County Sheriff's officials said 35-year-old Steven McKnight Jr., of Zion, has been charged with two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, four counts of aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, one count of reckless homicide, and one count of endangering the life of a child causing death.
On Nov. 26, McKnight was driving south on Green Bay Road in a Chevrolet Malibu, just north of Hart Street in Beach Park, and illegally passing other cars by driving in the northbound lanes, when he crashed head-on into an oncoming GMC Sierra, according to sheriff's police.
Investigators determined McKnight was holding his 2-year-old son in his lap at the time of the crash. His 5-year-old son, Sy'mere McKnight, was in the back seat, and also was not wearing any sort of restraining device. Sy'mere was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined he died of blunt force injuries from the crash.
McKnight was seriously injured, and his 2-year-old son was critically injured, but survived.
The driver of the GMC was seriously injured, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Following an investigation into the cause of the crash, police determined McKnight was driving under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash. He was arrested at his home in Zion on Thursday.
According to Lake County court records, McKnight was ordered held in jail while he awaits trial. He is due back in court on Aug. 7.

A teenage mother had to run from a moving car with her infant after her Lyft driver canceled the ride, drove past a turn for her destination, and locked her inside the vehicle, she told Indianapolis police. The 18-year-old mother told investigators she was only able to get out when her 2-month-old son started crying, and the driver rolled down the window to console the baby with fresh air, police wrote in a probable cause affidavit for the man's arrest. The driver is facing charges of kidnapping and criminal confinement in the case and remained in the Marion County Jail early Aug. 8. In a statement to IndyStar, Lyft said the driver's account was immediately banned after they learned about the Aug. 5 incident they called "deeply disturbing." "We have been in touch with the rider to offer our support," the company said, noting they are assisting law enforcement with the investigation. The case highlights safety longstanding safety concerns among passengers and drivers, especially women, using rideshare apps like Lyft and Uber. At 4:34 p.m., Aug. 5, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer responded to a gas station in the 3800 block of North Mitthoefer Road after being called by the mother. Earlier that afternoon, she told police, the teen ordered a ride to get to a family member's east side home from her apartment on the city's north side, a roughly 4-mile drive. According to court documents, she was picked up in a Chevrolet Malibu at 3:13 p.m., and after a couple of minutes, the driver cancelled the Lyft ride, and said to her "I don't know why it did that." The driver took the woman and child nearly 7 miles away their intended destination. During the trip the mother called family to let them know about the situation and attempted to get out of the vehicle, but told police the child safety lock was engaged. Near the intersection of East 38th Street and North Mitthoefer Road, the driver rolled the window down because the baby had started crying, according to court documents. That's when the teen reached through the window to unlock a car door from the outside, causing the man to suddenly brake. According to court records, she ran from the vehicle with her baby, and a family member who had been tracking her location picked her up and took her to the gas station. Before the family member had picked her up, she said the Lyft driver was sitting nearby in his vehicle and later circling the area in the car. Police did not document in the probable cause affidavit if they interviewed the driver. Lyft, which is considered Uber's smaller rival, has also reported thousands of sexual assaults. Court documents revealed that while Uber faces thousands of lawsuits in federal and state courts, Lyft is facing hundreds. Both companies have launched options that allow passengers to select female drivers. On July 23, Uber announced its preference option, which is piloting in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Detroit this month with plans for it to expand throughout the U.S. Lyft's Women+Connect option on the app offers women and nonbinary drivers a preference that helps them match more often with the same type of riders.

25-year-old killed in Wareham crash remembered for his humor and compassionate nature
A 25-year-old who died in a motor vehicle crash in Wareham on July 25, was remembered for 'his caring and compassionate nature' and was 'always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need,' according to his obituary. At around 5:05 p.m. on July 25, Wareham police responded to a crash near 2628 Cranberry Hwy., according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz's office. Emergency personnel found Jordan Anthony Hansen on the ground with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham before being taken to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, where he died of his injuries. Raymond Cardoza, a 67-year-old man, is facing drunken driving, manslaughter and hit-and-run charges in connection with the crash, according to Cruz's office. Cardoza and his car were found a quarter-mile from the crash scene. He was arrested after being identified as the driver involved in the crash, Cruz's office said. Cardoza has been charged with operating under the influence resulting in manslaughter, operating under the influence — 4th offense, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Hansen was born in New Bedford and lived in nearby Mattapoisett all his life, his obituary reads. Detroit police seeking tips on hit-and-run crash that injured a motorcyclist
The Detroit Police Department is seeking information from the public regarding a hit-and-run crash that injured a motorcyclist. The crash happened about 11:14 p.m. Tuesday on Grand River Road, near Hubbell Avenue. A Chevrolet Malibu on Grand River that attempted to make a left turn struck the motorcycle, police said. The 34-year-old motorcyclist had serious injuries as a result. There was a driver and a passenger in the Chevrolet Malibu, which had visible damage to the front driver's side after the collision.
