Last-gasp goal helps UAE keep Fifa World Cup hopes alive

Khaleej Times25-03-2025
Sultan Adil's late goal kept UAE' hopes of automatic qualification alive after they secured a last-gasp 2-1 win against North Korea in their AFC World Cup qualifying Group A match on Tuesday.
The result moved the UAE to 13 points, four behind second-placed Uzbekistan with just two matches remaining.
Iran earlier booked their spot at next year's global showpiece after a 2-2 draw with Uzbekistan.
UAE seized the early control and went ahead after only five minutes with Fabio de Lima notching his 21st international goal.
Harib Abdalla played the ball behind North Korea's defence with Kim Yu Song's attempted clearance bouncing off goalkeeper Kang Ju Hyok to allow Lima to pounce on the rebound and knock home the opener.
Paulo Bento's side had North Korea pinned in their own half with Caio Fernandes going close in the 15th minute with a diving header that had Kang beaten but was just slightly off target.
The game turned midway through the first half with DPR Korea starting to ask questions of the UAE's defence, Pak Hwang Hun produced a towering header that was inches away from finding the target.
North Korea got themselves back on level pegging in the 43rd minute from a corner kick when Jong Hwi Nam's initial header crashed against the bar with Yu Song nodding the rebound home.
The second half was a more balanced affair albeit one where chances were few and far in between.
Bento and his counterpart, Sin Yong Nam both made changes to their respective sides but the game looked no closer to producing another goal.
There was finally some goalmouth action with 10 minutes left on the clock, Kang making back-to-back saves to stop Abdalla Ramadan's free-kick before catching Lucas Pimenta's overhead attempt.
With seconds left in the seventh minute of added time, UAE found the winner with Adil glancing home a header from Abdalla's cross to break North Korea hearts.
The UAE, on the other hand, reignited their hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1990.
Asia has eight direct slots for the next Fifa World Cup which will be a 48-team tournament.
Eighteen teams have been divided into three groups of six each in the third round of the Asian qualifiers.
The UAE have been drawn in Group A with Qatar, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and North Korea.
South Korea, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Palestine and Kuwait are competing in Group B while Group C features Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, China and Indonesia.
The top two teams from each group will qualify directly for the World Cup. The third and fourth-placed teams in each group will then compete in the six-team fourth round of qualifiers.
The six teams in the fourth round will be divided into two groups of three teams. The winners of each group will earn the last two direct slots for the World Cup, while the two runners-up teams will be locked in a playoff battle.
The winner of the Asian playoff will then advance to an inter-confederation playoff tournament featuring five other teams for the final two slots in the World Cup.

Pogba in race against time as French League season looms

Paul Pogba's return to Monaco this summer set tongues wagging as the 2018 World Cup winner made his comeback to football after nearly three seasons on the sidelines -- a turbulent period blighted by injury, blackmail and an 18-month doping ban. Now with the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season looming large, the former Manchester United star must put all that behind him and get to work if he is to light up Monaco's Stade Louis II and realise his 'dream' of winning back his spot in the France national team. 'It's the wish of every French football player to represent the France national team, but there are stages,' Pogba said during his unveiling at Monaco in July. 'Today I'm at stage one: coming back and performing well.' Pogba's words attracted attention for what he could still offer on the field, but it was his tears of joy that really grabbed the spotlight. Images of the 32-year-old weeping as he signed a two-year contract with Monaco went viral on social media -- thus setting the tone for a very different type of graft. The arrival of the midfielder at Monaco represented more than just the return of a star name of French football to Ligue 1, it was clearly a marketing opportunity too good to pass up. Pogba was sent straight to work. First, he joined Zinedine Zidane for a video produced by their mutual sponsor, which garnered huge attention. Then, he took a trip to Saint Tropez with American influencer Darren Watkins Junior, who has 40 million followers under the name IShowSpeed. After that, he and his wife, Zulay, launched their new high-end jewellery brand, accompanied by a suitable social media campaign. Named 'Unbreakable', the jewellery collection is a direct nod to Pogba's recent travails. He was the victim in March 2022 of an attempt to extort 13 million euros ($15.1 million) from him by relatives, including his brother Mathias who was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, in 2024. Pogba was also injured for a long period and then suspended for 18 months after failing a drugs test while at Italian club Juventus in August 2023. 'High intensity': Since having his contract terminated by the Serie A outfit last November, Pogba had been living in the United States and training alone until Monaco came calling and offered him the chance to make his comeback. 'A lot of boxes were ticked: the conditions, the lifestyle, France, Ligue 1, the family, and of course the club,' explained Pogba, who will be playing club football in his home country for the first time in his professional career. Once back in a professional environment at Monaco, 'the easy part was just beginning' for Pogba. If the exquisitely gifted ball-player was less worried about getting his touch back, rediscovering the fitness and intensity of an elite athlete would be more challenging. A month later, Pogba has moved on to the second phase of his programme: individualised work on the pitch, often with the ball. 'I'm determined,' he said on his arrival. 'I want to get back on the pitch. But it will take as long as it takes.' 'Everything is going in the right direction,' Monaco general manager Thiago Scuro told AFP. 'He has started sessions on the pitch and is making progress. The timing is on track, the process is positive, with no red flags or setbacks so far.' Pogba's progress is been closely monitored by Monaco coach Adi Huetter, who so far is impressed by his commitment and how quickly he has integrated into a squad in which he is the elder statesman. For Scuro the key moment will be 'when (Pogba) is able to participate in all training sessions with the group'. 'The intensity, pressure and level are very high. He will have to be able to repeat this training load on a daily basis. We will then see how his body adapts.' Should all go to plan, Pogba could return to competition in the autumn -- perhaps even in time for the home match against fierce rivals Nice on Oct. 5. Agence France-Presse

UAE approves national team's schedule ahead of World Cup 2026

The UAE Football Association has approved the national team's schedule for September as they prepare for two Asian play-off matches for the 2026 World Cup. The play-offs will take place from October 8 to 14, with the national team facing Oman and Qatar at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The national team will also be holding a training camp in Dubai from August 25 to September 9, where they will play two friendly matches, the first against Syria on September 4, and the second against Bahrain on September 8. The matches will both be held at Zabeel Stadium in Al Wasl Club. Matar Al Sahbani, a leading member of the national team's administrative management, confirmed that the upcoming training camp will be more beneficial, following the success of the first training camp in Austria last month. He added that the local competitions will begin soon, and the players will play official matches with their clubs, which will aim to enhance their technical and physical readiness. He also stressed the technical staff's keenness to monitor the performance of all players, including those who missed the Austria camp due to injury. Al Sahbani explained that the selection of the Syrian and Bahraini teams for the upcoming friendly matches is due to the proximity to the level of the competitors in the Asian play-off.
