Jets offensive line already showing why it could make good on sky-high potential
Want to take the glass half-full approach and find a reason the offense could surpass low expectations?
Focus on the men up front. That's where Gang Green have pedigree.
Three first-round picks (Alijah Vera-Tucker, Armand Membou and Olu Fashanu), a second-round selection (Joe Tippmann) and a quality veteran (John Simpson). Five players between the ages of 21 and 27. It's easy to imagine this being the best offensive line the team has employed in a decade.
'Very, very impressed with how they operate,' first-year head coach Aaron Glenn said Monday. 'Big, strong men. They fit the personality that we want as an offense and how we want to operate. Obviously, we drafted Membou as our first pick, we added Olu last year, our interior is outstanding, and even some of the guys that are in the backup roles are doing a really good job for us.'

'The first thing is physicality,' Vera-Tucker added. 'Each of us come into work every day and are an example of that. And also, our communication up front, I feel like, has been really key to the execution.'
There is competition. Tippmann, who started every game at center last year, is battling free agent acquisition Josh Myers, who previously played for the Packers. Of the aforementioned six linemen, four of them played together at the end of last season, once Fashanu replaced Tyron Smith at left tackle. Membou, the seventh pick in April's draft, is the newcomer, starting at right tackle. The two youngsters have impressed their older teammates.
'You would never guess that Olu and Membou are both young guys,' Tippmann said. 'They carry themselves like vets. They take on each and every day like they're a vet.'
A year ago, the Jets were last in rushing attempts with 363. Part of that was the result of playing from behind so frequently. They were 16th in rushing yards per carry at 4.3. The plan is expected to be very different this year. They have a quarterback who can use his legs in Justin Fields and a deep running back core led by Breece Hall.

'The coaching staff has told us straight up, we're going to run the ball. That's different from the past,' Vera-Tucker said. 'As an offensive line, we like that. Obviously, we like hearing that. You always want to run the ball and get the defense tired out. The play-action opens up. You can get a couple of dropbacks for [Wilson] and all the wideouts to do their thing out wide.'
Vera-Tucker, the longest-tenured Jet of the five, is coming off what he described as the best offseason of his pro career.
No major injury to rehabilitate. No new position to learn. He has stability at right guard for the first time since the Jets drafted him in the first round in 2021.
'I was able to get an offseason full of just training,' said Vera-Tucker, who is eligible for free agency after the season. 'I feel really fast, quick and comfortable going into my senior year staying at one position.'
There is clearly the potential for the Jets to feature their best offensive line in quite some time. Vera-Tucker wasn't ready to make any predictions, considering it's still training camp, but he sees the possibilities.
'I think there's potential for that for sure,' Vera-Tucker said.

Former 1st Round QB Is Having An Awful Training Camp
Former 1st Round QB Is Having An Awful Training Camp originally appeared on The Spun. Either the New York Jets' defense is really good, or Aaron Glenn and Co. potentially have a big problem on their hands. After moving on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason and deciding to go in a younger direction by signing Justin Fields, the former No. 11 pick is reportedly having a really tough time getting his rhythm going during the team's training camp. According to SNY's Connor Hughes who was on-hand at this morning's practice, the Jets' passing game is "is not good at [the] moment." Adding, "Justin Fields finished 9 of 17 with 2 interceptions. I did not have a completion beyond five air yards. He took three sacks. Stats do not include 1 of 4 passing with an INT in 7o7 period." "Fields has had a rough go of it lately. He is 15 of 43 passing (34%) with the two INTs in full-team work his last three practices." This definitely wasn't the news folks in the tri-state wanted to hear to start the week. "And what was the reason why Tyrod wasn't given a fair shot in training camp again?" a user asked. "I'm staying silent," another commented. "Steelers-Jets is going to have a final score of 6-3," a fan predicted. "Still baffles me the jets made this move," another person said. "Steelers dodged one," another user posted. "Not a training camp merchant but a completion percentage shouldnt look like a batting average." "We will always have Ohio State," a Fields fan coped. If practice was always perfect there wouldn't be any reason to do it. But it's never great to hear about a QB struggling in any context — especially when they play for a franchise that's pretty much been starving for one since the Ford administration. There's still time to get things corrected — and Fields has been dealing with a toe injury — but Jets fan are only going to have so much patience before they get tired of watching the same old movie for the last 14 1st Round QB Is Having An Awful Training Camp first appeared on The Spun on Aug 5, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 5, 2025, where it first appeared.

Jets alums from the 1990s show up at camp, say Aaron Glenn has team going in right direction
As the Jets get ready to play their first preseason game this weekend against the Green Bay Packers, first-time head coach Aaron Glenn says there are marks he wants the team to meet ahead of the season. On Tuesday, he got some winning backup from former teammates who know what it takes to succeed. Jets alums from the 1990s came out to support Glenn and get a feel for the direction the team is heading in before the start of the season. It appears they liked what they saw. Former Jets cornerback Ray Mickens, Glenn's partner in the secondary for much of his eight seasons in green and white, said he remembers his former teammate's journey from player to scout to, finally, his dream job, head coach. "It's always good to see those guys. I want those guys to be part of what we're trying to build. They've been there. They know exactly what it is to be a Jet. There's a number of things that go into playing for this team and those guys know what it is. We're teaching our guys what it is. [The alums] have been through it. It's like déjà vu," Glenn said. Mickens said Glenn's rise from NFL player to head coach has been a testament to his dedication. "What it took to get there, you don't know if everybody is willing to do it. What I saw from him is someone who was willing to do anything that it took to become a head coach, and that's what gives me goosebumps," Mickens said. Glenn has seen both hard times and a winning culture with the Jets. Former offensive tackle Jason Fabini said he believes that will set him apart. "He's a brother, man," Fabini said of Glenn. "We played together. We've been through a lot, and to see him succeed is awesome. He knows New York and he knows what it takes to win here, and if he wins here what's gonna happen. It's awesome. Us former players want to see the team win." Kevin Mawae, a Hall of Famer center who played for the Jets, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans, said he's seen quite a progression from Glenn the player to Glenn the head coach. "It's neat to see the growth and the maturity of where he's at, but also the passion that he has for this organization," Mawae said. "It's one thing to be a coach somewhere else but it's another thing to coach your franchise that drafted you and brought you into this business, and wanting to turn it around." Mawae said there's a palpable buzz about the path the Jets are on. He said there will be bumps in the road along the way, but under Glenn's leadership the team should be able to handle adversity. "There's a pride that we had when we went to the AFC championship game when they went 1-15 and 2-14 the two previous years, especially as a drafted guy for him. Then to have the success playing together five years, it feels like we're heading in that direction again and we're exited about what lies ahead." As far as how practice went at camp on Tuesday, Glenn said the defense won the day. It was a mixed bag for quarterback Justin Fields, who at times showed great field vision and deep-pass ability. The hope is the team continues to gel before Week 1 of the regular season.
