World Matchplay Darts draw sees legends collide in Blackpool

Metro10-07-2025
Dutch legends Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld meet in the opening round of the World Matchplay, in one of a string of standout ties in Blackpool.
Five-time world champion Barney is still competing at 58 years old and remains hopeful that he can win his first Matchplay title, although he faces a man 22 years his junior who has won it three times.
One of the highlights of the darts calendar runs from July 19-27 this year at the Winter Gardens, with the winner leaving Blackpool with a £200,000 top prize.
The Matchplay sees the top 16 in the world rankings drawn against the top 16 on the PDC's Pro Tour Order of Merit, so it is a field boasting quality and form.
Defending champion and world number one Luke Humphries has a very tough opening test against Gian van Veen.
As ever there will be plenty of attention on Luke Littler, with the Nuke taking on Ryan Searle in his first round match.
The world champion is playing in the Matchplay for only the second time and is looking to pick up his first win in the famous old tournament.
There are attractive ties throughout the draw, with other standouts including James Wade playing Joe Cullen, Ross Smith taking on Josh Rock and Gerwyn Price meeting Daryl Gurney.

Charlie Woods out at U.S. Junior Amateur Championship

July 23 - Charlie Woods did not qualify to move on to the match play rounds at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in Dallas. The 16-year-old son of Tiger Woods shot rounds of 81 and 74 for a 14-over 155 during stroke play Monday and Tuesday. Match play began Wednesday morning. The tournament began with 264 players taking part in stroke play at Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club. The field was narrowed to the top 64 for match play. The younger Woods is a rising high school junior in Florida. His first round at Brook Hollow was marred by four double bogeys and five bogeys with just two birdies to offset them. In his second round at Trinity Forest, he played the front nine at even par with three birdies and bogeys but lost three strokes on the back nine with two double bogeys and three bogeys with two birdies. Tiger Woods was in Dallas to watch his son play. Charlie Woods will have other chances to play in the U.S. Junior Amateur, seeking to join an impressive list of winners who went on to become majors champions. That list includes Johnny Miller (1964), David Duval (1989), Tiger Woods (1991-93), Brian Harman (2003), Jordan Spieth (2009, 2011) and Scottie Scheffler (2013). Tiger Woods was 15 when he won his first Junior Amateur. The younger Woods missed the cut last year at the tournament at Oakland Hills in Michigan. --Field Level Media
