Muller says goodbye to Bundesliga as Kane finishes top scorer again
dpa
Sinsheim, Germany
Departing Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller said farewell to the Bundesliga with a victory but gave no clues as to his next destination.
He started Saturday's 4-0 win at Hoffenheim in the final Bundesliga game of the campaign.
The 35-year-old recently wrapped up a record-extending 13th Bundesliga title but will not stay in the German top flight out of respect for his so far only club Bayern.
'People have been bidding me farewell for six weeks,' he joked to Sky about the time since his exit announcement.
'It was a lot of fun. The time was crazy. The Bundesliga has always been my league, to play so many games is obviously nice.
'I wanted to score but only to win the game, not as a farewell goal.
Football is about winning.' Müller made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern way back in 2008 and has made 503 league appearances.
He might still turn out for Bayern at the Club World Cup from mid-June but is then widely expected to go to the MLS, also in the United States.
'I know what I'm doing tomorrow and the day after. Afterwards it is only in the stars. I will take my time. There is a bit of a pause before the next game in the middle of June,' he said.
'I like it when people think out of the box and make me an offer. The whole package has to work out.'
Harry Kane finished the season as Bundesliga top scorer for the second straight campaign with 26 goals. He said winning the title made the honour much sweeter.
'It is what I have been waiting for. It is a special feeling,' he said after netting off the bench at Hoffenheim. 'It was nice to finish with another goal.'

Report: FIFA slash ticket prices for Club World Cup before June 14 opener
Hoping to fill a lot of empty seats, FIFA is reportedly slashing ticket prices for the June 14 Club World Cup opener hosted by Inter Miami. The Athletic reported on Wednesday that 'tens of thousands' of seats at the 65,326-capacity Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, remain unsold for the 8pm ET match between football superstar Lionel Messi's MLS club and Egyptian side Al Ahly. FIFA rejected a suggestion that fewer than 20,000 tickets had been sold, insisting the number is 'much higher' but declining to provide a specific total. 'We are introducing many new, successful clubs from all over the world to the world through this tournament being staged in the 11 cities across the United States,' FIFA said in a statement. 'Overall, we anticipate great attendances throughout the competition for this first-ever edition – a tournament that we believe will grow edition-on-edition.' As of Tuesday night, tickets for that game had dropped to $55 on Ticketmaster – half of what they were going for last month. The cheapest seat available after the tournament draw in December was $349 but had dropped to $230 by December, per The Athletic. The 32-team FIFA Club World Cup runs through to July 13 and includes MLS clubs Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders and Los Angeles FC, plus global powerhouses like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

La Fuente praises Spain's ambition ahead of Nations League semis
PA Media/dpa London Spain boss Luis de la Fuente feels his young side have already shown the 'tremendous ambition' needed to go on and successfully defend their Nations League crown in Germany. The European champions face France in the semi-finals in Stuttgart on Thursday in a repeat of last summer's Euro 2024 last-four clash. Having topped their Nations League group with five wins, La Roja needed a penalty shoot-out to edge past the Netherlands in the quarter-finals following a thrilling 3-3 draw in the second leg in Valencia. Spain head to Germany on the back of a 23-game unbeaten run in competitive matches - last losing against Scotland in a Euro 2024 qualifier at Hampden Park during March 2023. 'I am proud. When you win so often, you get closer to losing because one day that will happen, but we see it as something completely normal,' De la Fuente told 'This is a group of very young players with tremendous ambition who don't get tired of winning. They will always bring us the joy of fighting for victory and that is always a wonderful thing. 'In the end, any result can happen, especially at this level where anything is possible - but the spirit of this team is always to compete to win, fight to win and endure whatever it takes to win, that is very important.' De la Fuente, who took over from Luis Enrique in December 2022, handed an international recall to veteran midfielder Isco after a six-year absence following his impressive campaign with Real Betis. New Real Madrid signing Dean Huijsen - having completed a switch from Bournemouth ahead of the Club World Cup - could be paired alongside fellow youngster Pau Cubarsi at centre-back. France also needed spot-kicks to come through their quarter-final against Croatia, having fought back from losing the first leg 2-0 in Split. Missing several players through injury, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps gave Lyon winger Rayan Cherki, 21, a first senior call-up. Seven members of the French squad who were involved in the Champions League final - which saw Paris aint-Germain thrash Inter Milan 5-0 - joined up with their team-mates at Clairefontaine ahead of travelling back out to Germany. Despite not being able to call upon the likes of defensive regulars William Saliba, Jules Kounde and Dayot Upamecano, France coach Deschamps wants his players to be brave against the European champions. 'Ideally speaking, I would wish all the three who are absent to be with us,' Deschamps said at a press conference. 'They have been my back-line for the past two years, but it means I can give playing time to somebody else. 'Against a rival like Spain we need to be sufficiently solid at the back - but if we are only planning to defend then there is no point in playing a football game. We need to strike the balance between defending and attacking. The primary objective is that we need a team which is capable of making life difficult for Spain.'

Goretzka, Wirtz to start for Germany vs Portugal
dpa Munich Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has decided on nine of the starting XI for the Nations League semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday, but has not told all his players yet. 'If they've been paying attention in training, they know if they'll play,' Nagelsmann told a news conference at Munich's Allianz Arena on Tuesday. Four names are certainly in the line-up. Captain Joshua Kimmich will be making his 100th cap, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is returning after a long injury break and midfielder Leon Goretzka will start. 'I've been paying attention,' the Bayern Munich man smirked at the news conference. Florian Wirtz will also play despite a transfer saga involving current club Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool. Nagelsmann said: 'I don't think that it is weighing on him. It's quite normal to have one or two thoughts.' Forward Nick Woltemade, given a first call-up to the squad after a strong season for VfB Stuttgart, has made a good impression in training but Nagelsmann stopped short of confirming he will start. Germany are back in a semi-final for the first time in eight years. Their last title was at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. 'When you take part in a competition, my mindset is that you want to win it,' Goretzka said of the Nations League, Europe's secondary national competition. Spain meet France in the other semi in Stuttgart on Thursday. Sunday's final is in Munich.
