Haryana allocates ₹74.5 crore for road safety initiatives to reduce accidents, enhance emergency response systems

The Hindu2 days ago

A budget of ₹74.5 crore was approved at the eighth meeting of the Haryana Fund Management Committee (FMC) on Road Safety for the current year to reduce road accident fatalities and enhance emergency response systems across the State, said a press release issued by the State government.
At the meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi in Chandigarh, it was informed that for the first time in Haryana, PWD (B&R) had decided to launch School Zone Road Safety Treatment project and for this, the FMC has allocated ₹25 crore. Besides, ₹17.50 crore has been set apart for the Health Department for the purchase of around 50 basic life support ambulances.
A total of ₹19 crore has been allocated to the Police Department to establish CCTV-based surveillance systems in 19 districts. Additionally, ₹10 crore has been sanctioned for District Road Safety Committees to carry out safety activities, ₹1 crore for secondary education, and ₹2 crore for Secretariat of State Road Safety Council. These allocations are based on ₹199.09 crore collected as compounding fees during the financial year 2024–25.
As part of its commitment to ensure safe travel for all road users, the State government has been implementing the Haryana Road Safety Policy, 2016. The policy focuses on the effective execution of the four 'Es' — Enforcement, Engineering (Roads & Vehicles), Education, and Emergency Care. These efforts have contributed to a decline in road accidents and fatalities across the State.
In 2022, Haryana recorded 11,105 accidents and 5,596 deaths. In 2023, the figures stood at 10,438 accidents and 5,195 deaths, followed by 9,759 accidents and 4,828 deaths in 2024. In 2025, up to May 25, the numbers have further decreased to 6,770 accidents and 1,942 deaths — indicating the positive impact of sustained road safety initiatives.

5 heavy vehicles hit Sitabuldi flyover height barriers in 36 hours, cops explore solution

Nagpur: Heavy vehicles are crashing into the Adivasi Gowari aka Sitabuldi flyover height barriers at an alarmingly high frequency, with five such accidents reported in just 36 hours since installation of the structures at the Rahate Colony end and Zero Mile end on Monday night. After three separate collisions on Tuesday, two more incidents took place on Wednesday, when in the morning a truck reportedly belonging to a Hyderabad-based explosives manufacturing company rammed into the barrier at the Zero Mile entry point of the flyover, followed by a sand tipper later. Police said the truck belonging to the explosives company was not carrying any hazardous material at the time of the crash. "There was no risk of explosion. The truck was empty and not carrying any explosives consignment," police inspector Vitthalsinh Rajput of Sitabuldi police station told TOI. Th PI added that both drivers involved in Wednesday's collisions have been booked for negligent driving and destruction of public property. The height barriers have been installed to prevent oversized vehicles from using the flyover, which is not structurally designed to support such loads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Amplie seus horizontes: Estude no exterior (Clique para mais informações) Study Abroad Saiba Mais Undo Assistant commissioner of police (Traffic) Madhura Baviskar confirmed that a meeting was held with the Public Works Department (PWD) to explore more effective solutions. "We are considering all options to prevent further accidents," she said. A spot visit by TOI on Wednesday revealed temporary damage control measures. The tattered signage of the height limits was tied to the divider using ropes to prevent traffic disruption. One of the height bars at the Rahate Colony end had been completely removed after sustaining severe damage and is now awaiting replacement by the PWD. Sources said that while a round-the-clock police patrol could help curb such incidents, the solution may not be feasible given existing manpower constraints. "Deploying personnel 24x7 for this one spot would stretch our resources thin," an official said. Traffic NGO Janakrosh too slammed the cops for the accidents, and demanded the company owners or truck owners bear the cost of repairs and replacements.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He warned of disciplinary action against those officials who would fail to take time-bound action and stressed on making the image of administration better. In the meeting, he directed to issue show cause notices to seven departments for careless attitude towards public complaints. The seven departments are Jalkal department, municipal corporation, SDM (Sadar) Kanpur Nagar, PWD, tehsildar Sadar Kanpur Nagar, district inspector of schools and assistant labour commissioner Kanpur Nagar. In a review meeting held at the collectorate auditorium, Singh said that quality disposal of IGRS (Integrated Grievance Redressal System) references was the top priority of the government. The DM stated that in the evaluation report submitted by the government on June 3, the percentage of negative feedback received in relation to the references resolved by various departments was found to be of great concern. Notably, in some departments this negative feedback has been recorded as high as 83 per cent, which reflects serious laxity in departmental functioning and blatant disregard for citizens' expectations. Terming this situation as extremely regrettable Singh said that it was indicative of clear indifference in discharging duty. He said this shows that the complaints have not been resolved seriously and in a qualitative manner by the officers/employees concerned or their supervisory responsibilities have not been discharged efficiently. As a result of this serious lapse, the ranking of the district has been adversely affected, which has also caused a serious blow to the administrative image of the district. Taking cognisance in the matter, the district magistrate had directed all the officers concerned to determine the responsibility of their subordinate officers/employees and ensure necessary and strict action as per
