Flyover Repairs On 4th Ring Road Spark Widespread Frustration
KUWAIT CITY, April 23: The partial closure of the Fourth Ring Road, in the direction of the United Nations Roundabout—from the King Fahd flyover bridge to the Damascus Street flyover bridge—has led to significant traffic congestion over the past two days. The closure, announced by the General Authority for Roads and Land Transport, coincided with the start of the school year, and the employees who daily commute further worsening traffic conditions in the area. The closure began at dawn on Friday and is part of a month-long comprehensive maintenance plan launched by the Roads and Transport Authority in collaboration with the General Traffic Department.
Despite prior coordination and approval from the Ministry of Public Works, the Roads and Transport Authority, and other relevant agencies, the closure timing has sparked frustration among Kuwaiti citizens and expats. Many believe that carrying out such extensive roadwork during this busy period has intensified their daily hardships. They have called on authorities to reconsider the timing of major infrastructure projects to minimize disruption to public life.
In a related development, the Ministry of Public Works secured all necessary approvals before implementing the closure. They also noted that alternative routes are being arranged with the General Traffic Department to help ease traffic during peak hours, particularly when students and employees are commuting in the mornings and evenings. The Ministry emphasized that maintenance work is progressing rapidly to ensure timely completion. It also highlighted that a traffic management plan has been implemented in cooperation with the Traffic Department to mitigate congestion during the ongoing roadworks.

Rare views of Al-Hala Island documented by Kuwaiti photographer
KUWAIT: Kuwaiti environmentalist and photographer Dr Abdullah Al-Zaidan has successfully observed and documented the rare natural phenomenon of Al-Hala Island, located in the southern part of Kuwaiti waters, specifically in the Al-Zour area. The island is a stunning and unusual natural feature. Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday, Al-Zaidan explained that Al-Hala is a temporary sandbar that emerges during low tide and completely disappears during high tide. Its unique nature makes it a favored destination for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility. He added that the island's transformation is a key attraction, making it a prime spot for environmental marine tourism. Visitors are drawn to this nontraditional experience amid the clear waters of the Gulf, where they can engage with untouched nature far from pollution and urban development. Al-Hala Island Fish swim near the coral reefs in the waters surrounding Al-Hala Island. An endangered green turtle swims underwater at the island. Al-Zaidan emphasized that visiting Al-Hala Island helps raise environmental awareness and promotes sustainable tourism, which balances enjoyment with the preservation of natural ecosystems. Regarding the surrounding area, he noted that the Al-Zour coastline is ecologically significant due to minimal human activity and construction, making it a vital habitat. It hosts endangered green turtles, which come to nest and lay eggs during specific seasons, and it is home to vibrant coral reefs essential to marine biodiversity. The area also serves as a resting site for migratory and resident seabirds, which use the island as a natural stopover along the coast. Dr Al-Zaidan concluded by stressing the importance of protecting these fragile marine areas and encouraging mindful visits to help preserve marine life and ensure ecological balance for future generations. — KUNA

Behbehani leads Kuwait's challenge at Asian Junior Gymnastics Championships
SEOUL, June 3: The Kuwaiti artistic gymnastics team is participating in the 18th Asian Junior Championships, taking place in South Korea from June 5 to 8. Representing the team is rising talent Abdullah Behbehani, who continues to make strides on the international stage. Behbehani recently delivered strong performances at the West Asian Youth and Junior Championships in Amman, Jordan, and the Luxembourg International Open Artistic Gymnastics Championships—both held last May. The Kuwaiti delegation departed for Seoul, led by team manager Khaled Al-Mazen. The traveling party also includes Ukrainian coach Vitaly Arsenyev, international referee Salah Askar, and athlete Abdullah Behbehani. The Kuwait Gymnastics Federation extended its best wishes to Behbehani ahead of the tournament, noting the elevated level of competition at the Asian Championship compared to previous events. The federation, however, expressed full confidence in Behbehani's dedication and potential to represent Kuwaiti gymnastics with pride. 'This championship offers a valuable opportunity for Abdullah to engage with some of Asia's top gymnasts, test his skills under pressure, and continue his development,' the federation stated. The participation in this continental championship is part of a broader, long-term strategy to prepare Behbehani for future international milestones, including the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
