There are concerns for the safety of a police officer's family after a recent troubling incident in Cape Town.
According to police, an armed man walked into a 'local institute of learning' in the suburb of Bellville with 'malicious intent', and asked a teacher for the whereabouts of a student.
The learner, a child of an unnamed police officer, had been collected earlier in the day.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi would not divulge the prominence or rank of the officer to The Citizen, but the incident has been disturbing enough to warrant the involvement of the province's Serious and Violent Crimes Unit and a R50 000 reward to be offered.
An image of a man wanted by police in connection with the incident has been shared, and anyone with information about him is encouraged to report it.
'It is imperative that the person be traced and brought in for questioning. A reward of up to R50 000 is offered for any information on the whereabouts of the person of interest, depicted in the attached photograph.
'The investigating officer Detective Constable Mawande Mqhwayi can be contacted on 073 734 2611 or alternatively use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,' said Swartbooi.

WATCH: DA marches on Germiston SAPS over GBV and crime crisis
WATCH: DA marches on Germiston SAPS over GBV and crime crisis The Democratic Alliance (DA) staged a march to the Germiston SAPS on Friday, demanding increased resources to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) and crime across Ekurhuleni's police stations. According to crime statistics, Ekurhuleni recorded more than 1 600 murders in 2024, with precincts such as Primrose and Germiston ranking among the most dangerous in South Africa. Despite the crisis, many police stations in the district face severe staff and vehicle shortages, leaving GBV victims without adequate support. ALSO READ: WATCH: Delville residents protest over alleged police bias at Germiston station The march, led by DA Deputy Spokesperson on Police, Lisa Schickerling MP, wound through the Germiston CBD before stopping at the police station to hand over a memorandum of demands. 'Out of 1 154 police stations nationwide, only 134 have dedicated GBV desks. This means that most victims have no proper support,' said Schickerling. 'National government is failing to protect the people of Ekurhuleni. Communities are terrorised daily while SAPS remains understaffed, under-equipped, and overwhelmed.' The DA's memorandum calls for: Increased visible policing and crime prevention in hotspots. Fully operational vehicles and adequately staffed police stations. Strengthened GBV support services at all precincts. Transparent, quarterly crime statistics. A dedicated crime-reduction strategy for Ekurhuleni. Schickerling emphasised that without urgent intervention, the safety of residents will continue to deteriorate.

Don't wait to report a missing person police urges
Contrary to popular belief, there is no waiting period to report a missing person. This was reaffirmed by the South African Police Service, which emphasised that when someone goes missing, 'time is critical', urging the public to report a missing person at their nearest police station immediately. Here's what you need to report a missing person: Produce a recent photograph of the missing person, if possible Give a complete description of the missing person's last whereabouts, clothes they were wearing, as well as any information that can assist the investigating officer Complete and sign a SAPS 55(A) form. This form safeguards the SAPS from hoax reports, and indemnifies the SAPS to distribute the photograph and information of the missing person Obtain the investigating officer's contact details, and send any additional information that might become available If a missing person is found or returns voluntarily, inform the investigating officer immediately. A SAPS 92 form must be completed to inform the Bureau of Missing Persons that the missing person's report can be removed from the circulation system. RT #sapsHINT There is NO waiting period to report a #missing person. When someone goes missing, time is critical. Report a missing person at your nearest police station immediately. Police minister vows to capture Jabulani Moyo, the cop killer
Jabulani Moyo is alleged to have killed two police detectives in Roodepoort on Friday, August 8. Image: SAPS Acting minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia said the SAPS will not rest until Jabulani Moyo is behind bars for the murder of two police officers who were transporting him back from court on Friday in Roodepoort, Gauteng. The officers were shot at and disarmed in Roodepoort CBD while returning Jabulani Moyo to prison after his court appearance for a February 2023 business robbery. Moyo was seen driving the abandoned police vehicle, which was later found kilometres from the crime scene, and police confirmed a murder case with two counts is under investigation. The suspect is currently on the run, and a manhunt has been launched. In a statement on Saturday, Cachalia offered the ministry's condolences to the families of the deceased officers. Their sacrifice in the line of duty is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by our police officers as they work to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all South Africans,' he said. Cachalia said South Africans owe them and every officer who puts on the blue uniform a debt of gratitude. He said the National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, has deployed maximum resources to track down and apprehend Moyo. 'We condemn this brazen act of violence in the strongest possible terms. An attack on the police is an attack on the state. We will not rest until Jabulani Moyo is behind bars,' said the acting Minister. Cachalia urged the public to come forward with information on Moyo's whereabouts immediately. 'No detail is too small, and your assistance could be critical in ensuring that justice is served,' he said. He added that the Ministry stands with the men and women in blue. 'We mourn with you. And we will continue to support you as you carry out your vital work on behalf of our nation.' Masemola has deployed maximum resources to trace Moyo, including crime intelligence operatives, detectives, as well as the Gauteng DPC tracking teams and the Hawks. He urged all South Africans not to shelter the dangerous criminal, who is armed with a SAPS firearm stolen from an officer and allegedly used to kill the two detectives. 'Moyo must be stopped in his tracks, and he can only be prevented from committing further crimes if the community cooperates with the police by providing us with information on his whereabouts. 'Moyo is a dangerous criminal, and our operatives are on the ground looking for him to prevent him from committing any more heinous crimes. We will not rest until we find him, and we are also warning him to hand himself over to his nearest police station,' said Masemola. Those who may have information on this case, including the whereabouts of Moyo, are encouraged to call Warrant Officer Rabosiwana from the Hawks on 0728444442. The murder of two detectives precedes SAPS's annual Commemoration Day, held on the first Sunday of September, honouring 27 officers who died in the last financial year. SAPS has lost five officers in the line of duty since April 1 to date.
