There are concerns for the safety of a police officer's family after a recent troubling incident in Cape Town.
According to police, an armed man walked into a 'local institute of learning' in the suburb of Bellville with 'malicious intent', and asked a teacher for the whereabouts of a student.
The learner, a child of an unnamed police officer, had been collected earlier in the day.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi would not divulge the prominence or rank of the officer to The Citizen, but the incident has been disturbing enough to warrant the involvement of the province's Serious and Violent Crimes Unit and a R50 000 reward to be offered.
An image of a man wanted by police in connection with the incident has been shared, and anyone with information about him is encouraged to report it.
'It is imperative that the person be traced and brought in for questioning. A reward of up to R50 000 is offered for any information on the whereabouts of the person of interest, depicted in the attached photograph.
'The investigating officer Detective Constable Mawande Mqhwayi can be contacted on 073 734 2611 or alternatively use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,' said Swartbooi.

The DA's memorandum calls for: Increased visible policing and crime prevention in hotspots. Fully operational vehicles and adequately staffed police stations. Strengthened GBV support services at all precincts. Transparent, quarterly crime statistics. A dedicated crime-reduction strategy for Ekurhuleni. Schickerling emphasised that without urgent intervention, the safety of residents will continue to deteriorate.

Don't wait to report a missing person police urges
Contrary to popular belief, there is no waiting period to report a missing person. This was reaffirmed by the South African Police Service, which emphasised that when someone goes missing, 'time is critical', urging the public to report a missing person at their nearest police station immediately. Police minister vows to capture Jabulani Moyo, the cop killer

Image: SAPS Acting minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia said the SAPS will not rest until Jabulani Moyo is behind bars for the murder of two police officers who were transporting him back from court on Friday in Roodepoort, Gauteng. The officers were shot at and disarmed in Roodepoort CBD while returning Jabulani Moyo to prison after his court appearance for a February 2023 business robbery. Moyo was seen driving the abandoned police vehicle, which was later found kilometres from the crime scene, and police confirmed a murder case with two counts is under investigation. The suspect is currently on the run, and a manhunt has been launched. In a statement on Saturday, Cachalia offered the ministry's condolences to the families of the deceased officers.
