Lake Champlain gets national recognition

Yahoo02-05-2025
PLATTSBURGH — Lake Champlain, long known anecdotally as one of the best fisheries in the nation, has gained official recognition of such a title.
FishingBooker, one of the world's largest platforms for booking fishing trips, has listed the lake as one of the top 18 freshwater fishing destinations in the country.
FISHING 'GREAT THROUGHOUT' SEASON
In naming Lake Champlain as one of the best, FishingBooker said, 'To start with, you'll get to chase after big lake trout, landlocked Atlantic salmon, and bass here. These are the most commonly targeted species, but the lake also holds northern pike and musky, as well as yellow perch and walleye.'
It also mentioned, 'Trout and salmon fishing starts in early April, which is also an excellent time to reel in the rest of the lake's most coveted game fish. Usually, the fish will be lurking close to shore in spring and fall and moving deep in summertime, but the fishing is great throughout the open water season.'
FishingBooker offers more than 50,000 fishing trips in more than 2,370 destinations worldwide.
The North Country Chamber of Commerce, which promotes many of the professional fishing tournaments on the lake, said the lake has once again proven itself a world-class destination for anglers.
'Recognized for its incredible variety, accessibility, and strong year-round fishing, the lake stands proudly alongside some of the most iconic freshwater fisheries in the country,' the chamber said.
NATIONAL RADAR
The chamber noted that FishingBooker highlighted Lake Champlain for its abundance of sought-after species, making it a dream for anglers of all interests and skill levels.
'With its natural beauty, diverse fishery, and strong local partnerships, Lake Champlain continues to rise on the national radar,' Kristy Kennedy, Vice President of Marketing for the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, said.
'This recognition wouldn't be possible without the years of dedication from our team — and especially Alyssa Senecal, who has planned and executed these nationally recognized tournaments for the past 11 years with incredible professionalism and care.'
Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman said the lake is truly one of the great treasures of the North Country, and its recognition as one of the best fishing lakes in the nation is well deserved.
'We are proud to celebrate the lake's remarkable fishery... But Lake Champlain is more than just a fishing destination. It's a critical economic engine, a recreational playground, and an environmental asset that shapes the character of our entire region,' Cashman said.
'This national recognition underscores the importance of safeguarding the lake's health and ensuring it continues to thrive for the benefit of our residents, visitors, and future generations.'

Georgetown guide: What's new and next in D.C.'s trendy-again neighborhood

On the hot topic of whether Georgetown is cool again, we'll throw our weight behind "yes." Why it matters: An influx of trendy attractions and waterfront revival means one of D.C.'s most charming and historic neighborhoods is also among its most happening. 🚣 What's new on the water: A public boathouse is coming to the Potomac near Key Bridge — the result of a major land deal between Georgetown University, the city, and the National Park Service. More waterfront will become publicly accessible, and the Capital Crescent Trail will finally connect through the neighborhood. Two residential-retail projects at 1000 Potomac Street and 3333 K Street promise more upscale housing and retail by the harbor. 🌮 Bonus float: A taco-themed party boat now sails weekdays from Washington Harbour. The big picture: With nearly 7 million visitors in the first half of the year, Georgetown is one of the most popular D.C. destinations — but there's plenty to draw locals, too. What's new 🍣 Restaurants: Japanese restaurants are flocking here — and it's not just sushi, though Sushi Gaku is among them. Two Nine: A chirashi cafe with matcha and sweets by day. Omakase at night. Koryouri Urara: Cozy kaiseki restaurant with homestyle dishes. 🍨 Plus, cool off with a sweet treat from Yala Greek Ice Cream shop. 👗 Shops: Fashion girlies welcome LA's Staud. 🛎️ Sleep: Marriott's boutique hotel Canal House just opened with a cozy lounge and Mid-Atlantic restaurant. Or if you have $25,000 (a night) to burn, this ultra-luxe private villa. What's next All slated to open this year. 💐 Restaurants: Argentina's lauded cocktail bar Florería Atlántico and sister restaurant Brasero Atlántico make their U.S. debut along the C&O Canal— both accessed, speakeasy-style, through a flower shop. (ETA: late Aug./early Sept.) We're also excited for: Flor Coffee + Books: Argentinian cafe culture in a zen-like space. Dutch Darlings: Stroopwafels! Amorino Gelato: Parisian pedigree, rose-shaped scoops. 🐶 Shops: Gtown's cat cafe will have a canine counterpart at Milo and Mav, a dog-friendly retailer and coffee shop. 💻 Also huge: D.C.'s first Google store, one of only a few. Tech, gadgets, gear and merch.

American adds Budapest, Prague and Buenos Aires flights for summer 2026

American Airlines is reviving some of its pre-pandemic destinations like Prague and Budapest, Hungary, as international travel continues to hold up better than domestic demand. Other additions include its first-ever Dallas Fort Worth International flights to Athens, Greece, and year-round nonstop service between Miami and Milan. American is also extending service for next year's World Cup, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Dallas and between Dallas and Zurich, where soccer's governing body, FIFA, is based,. Those flights will run from May 21 to Aug. 4 of next year, a bid for more business travel and sports tourism. Brian Znotins, American's senior vice president of network and schedule planning, told CNBC that the airline saw high numbers of customers from Argentina travel to Doha, Qatar, during the 2022 World Cup and that he expects even more to travel to the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. He also said the airline is expanding its Europe service in a bet that customers would rather connect in a U.S. hub like Dallas or Charlotte, North Carolina. 'We took a fresh look at where the demand hotspots are in Europe and we continue to see strength in Italy and Greece,' Znotins said. 'We continue to see high numbers of travelers connecting in Europe to get to places like Rome and Athens,' so the airline is adding more options from U.S. hubs. With Prague and Budapest service from American's hub at Philadelphia International Airport, he said many customers already fly into one city and out of the other for Danube River cruises and other tours. American's unit revenue for domestic flights in the last quarter fell 6.4% from 2024, while trans-Atlantic revenue rose 5%. Many of American's summer routes were discontinued because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but Znotins said the changes weren't just a return to that period. 'We've redesigned the entire airline based on today's demand environment and not some desire to get back to 2019,' he said. 'Everything has changed.' American will use Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners for all the new flights except for Zurich to Dallas, which will be flown by Boeing 777-200s.
