Ahead of a Major Show, Artist Jeffrey Gibson Reflects on His Meteoric Rise

The Venice Art Bienniale is not known for its crowds—the city is simply too big, and the dozens of exhibitions are too spread out to ever result in a critical mass.
And yet last year, during the 60th edition's opening day, a sea of people jostling and craning and taking photos had gathered outside the US Pavilion. There, the artist Jeffrey Gibson had covered the building's staid, Palladian facade with bright red panels and equally vivid geometric designs. In the building's courtyard, standing on and alongside a multitiered platform that Gibson designed, a team of 26 Native American Jingle Dancers moved in unison, the metal cones on their traditional, brightly colored regalia tinkling in rhythm. As the performance ended, Gibson took the stage to applause and cheers.

Newlyweds Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez want R3,3m in damages from her brother

Fresh from their lavish R900-million Italian wedding, billionaire newlyweds Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have turned their attention to a far less romantic matter: collecting legal fees from family. The Amazon founder and his wife are demanding R3,3 million in legal costs from Lauren's estranged brother, Michael Sanchez, following years of bitter court battles which have torn the family apart. While R3,3 million might be pocket change for the world's third-richest man, the couple's lawyers aren't letting it slide. They recently filed a motion demanding that Michael pay R3,2 million in attorney's fees as well as R143 594 in legal costs. The motion, which was filed in July, says that these costs came about because of a successful Special Motion to Strike and a later motion for attorney's fees. The filings refer to California's Anti-SLAPP law, which protects people from lawsuits that try to scare or silence them about things that are important to the public. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sánchez Bezos (@laurensanchezbezos) The family drama began in early 2019, just as Jeff announced his divorce from MacKenzie Scott after 25 years of marriage. At the time, the tech mogul was rumoured to be romantically involved with Lauren, who had separated from her then-husband, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell. Their budding romance took a dramatic turn when American tabloid, The National Enquirer, threatened to publish intimate photos and explicit text messages between the couple. Jeff beat the tabloid to the punch and published descriptions of the images himself, along with his correspondence with the tabloid's owners on Medium. 'I had nothing to do with the leak of the pics,' Michael said previously. 'There are, like, 20 d*ck pics. Lauren likely shared them with multiple girlfriends – not in a malicious way, that's not her style, but when she's in love, she got a kick out of sharing them.' He claims Lauren once tried to show him one of the images. 'I was like, 'What the f**k is wrong with you? I don't want to see that!'' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sánchez Bezos (@laurensanchezbezos) In 2020, Michael unsuccessfully sued Jeff for defamation. The following year, Jeff was awarded R3,9 million in legal fees, but the back-and-forth litigation continued. Michael has denied leaking the pictures but it's been reported that he had signed a nondisclosure agreement about the couple's alleged affair. However, Michael claims he worked with the tabloid to help his sister, not harm her. Lauren's version of events paints a different picture. 'Michael secretly provided my most personal information to the National Enquirer – a deep and unforgivable betrayal. My family is hurting over this new baseless and untrue lawsuit, and we truly hope my brother finds peace,' she said in a lawyer's letter. Despite the ongoing family chaos, the newlyweds seem unfazed by the legal drama. They've been spotted partying across Europe, from exclusive Ibiza nightclubs to double dates with Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, aboard Jeff's R8,7-billion superyacht.

Justin Bieber's New Single Enjoys Its Biggest Week Yet

A month after releasing his new album Swag, Justin Bieber's latest project is in a state of decline on the charts in the United Kingdom. The surprise project, which arrived with only a few hours' warning, is largely stepping back, even as promotion of several tunes increases. The full-length's lead single, 'Daisies,' is also falling, but follow-up cut 'Yukon' bucks the trend and is actually gaining ground week after week. This frame is its biggest yet in the country. 'Yukon' Debuts on Two Charts 'Yukon' debuts on two of the four U.K.-based charts on which it appears. The track enters the Official Singles Downloads list at No. 88 and the Official Singles Sales tally at No. 92. Justin Bieber Has Scored Dozens of Sales Wins Bieber is far more successful on the downloads chart, where 'Yukon' earns the singer his seventy-first appearance. He has yet to crack 40 wins on the singles sales ranking, as this new placement becomes his thirty-seventh on the Official Singles Sales roster. 'Yukon' Drives to New Peaks At the same time that 'Yukon' debuts on two charts, it also rises to new high points on another pair. Four weeks into its lifetime on the Official Singles chart — the ranking of the 100 most-consumed tunes in the U.K. — the second Swag smash jumps more than 10 spots, climbing from No. 37 to No. 24. The track manages an even greater ascent on the Official Streaming roster, pushing from No. 89 to No. 58. 'Daisies' Lives Inside the Top 10 'Daisies,' which was selected as the first single from Swag, is still Bieber's biggest hit from the bunch. The former champion on the Official Singles chart steps back from No. 2 to No. 3 and also retreats on both the Official Streaming and Official Singles Downloads rankings at the same time. 'Go Baby' Holds On Again Another album cut, 'Go Baby,' has spent three frames on the consumption-based roster. After hitting an all-time high of No. 49, 'Go Baby' dips from No. 76 to No. 82 on the Official Singles chart. Justin Bieber's Swag Begins to Fall Swag holds at No. 13 on the Official Albums chart this week. That's the only tally where the Canadian singer's latest full length doesn't fall. After three weeks inside the top 10, Swag dips beneath the highest tier on the Official Albums Streaming roster, where it now settles at No. 11. The title barely hangs on inside the top 40 on the Official Album Downloads ranking, stepping back from No. 37 to No. 40.
