Malaysia Sun21-05-2025

Langkawi [Malaysia], May 20 (ANI): An Indian delegation led by Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth took part in the opening ceremony of the 17th edition of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 2025) in Langkawi, Malaysia, on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence said in a release.
The five-day event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, and is being attended by global leaders and industry representatives from across the maritime and aerospace sectors.
At the event, Sanjay Seth inaugurated the India Pavilion, which highlights the growing capabilities of India's indigenous defence industry. The pavilion features participation from key Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and private companies.
Demonstrating India's increasing self-reliance in the defence sector, the pavilion showcases advanced technologies such as the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Dornier aircraft manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. India's well-curated presence among global defence leaders reflects its rising prominence in the field of indigenous defence production and innovation.
During his visit, Raksha Rajya Mantri toured various exhibition stalls at the LIMA 2025 venue. He interacted with dignitaries and senior officials from several participating countries, exchanging views and reaffirming India's commitment to international collaboration in defence and aerospace.
His meetings focused on strengthening existing ties and exploring new avenues for strategic cooperation in line with India's defence outreach goals.
India and Malaysia share a strong and evolving bilateral relationship, with deepening engagements in defence and security. The relationship has been further strengthened under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was formally established during the Malaysian Prime Minister's visit to India in 2024.
The partnership continues to expand across multiple strategic domains, including maritime cooperation, aerospace, and defence manufacturing.
Adding further weight to India's participation at LIMA 2025, an Indian Naval Ship is also scheduled to take part in the event. Established in 1991 and held biennially, LIMA has grown into one of the largest and most significant maritime and aerospace exhibitions in the Asia-Pacific, bringing together leading global stakeholders in defence, technology, and innovation. Emerging Markets -Asian shares fall on Trump's steel tariff threat but currencies steady

SINGAPORE (Reuters): Asian equities fell on Monday, dragged by losses in South Korean and Vietnamese steelmakers, after US President Donald Trump threatened to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium, while regional currencies held firm against a softer dollar. Trading volumes were thin overall due to a public holiday in the region, with markets in China, Thailand and Malaysia remaining closed. Trump's announcement late on Friday to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50% intensified a global trade war and came just hours after he accused China of violating an agreement to mutually roll back tariffs on critical minerals. Shares in South Korea fell 0.5% on Monday, with steelmakers POSCO and Hyundai Steel falling 3% and SeAH Steel Corp down as much as 12.6%. In Vietnam, major steelmaker Hoa Sen Group fell 5.8%. Investors were cautious as markets digested tariff uncertainty and geopolitical risk, including from the latest developments in Ukraine and Russia, said Junvum Kim, a sales trader at Saxo Capital Markets. Ukraine's overnight drone strikes hit Russia's Kursk and Voronezh regions triggering residential fires and disrupting traffic. Shares in Taiwan and Indonesia fell more than 1.5% each, while those in Singapore and India slipped 0.5%, each. The Indonesian benchmark index emerged as the best performer regionally in May, adding more than 6%, and Monday's trading could be due to profit-taking, said Fakhrul Fulvian, an economist at Trimegah Securities. Data showed Indonesia's annual inflation rate at 1.60% in May, slowing more sharply than expected. Currencies in the region were largely steady, with the South Korean won advancing 0.7%. The Indian rupee, and Singapore dollar advanced 0.2%. The Taiwanese dollar , however, lost 0.2%. The US. dollar declined 0.5% as mounting fiscal concerns and a broad "Sell America" wave continued to weigh on U.S. assets from stocks to Treasuries. "In the Asean region, we expect the currencies to further appreciate this year as global investors spread their holdings more widely after years of heavy U.S. positioning," Maybank analysts said in a research note. On Tuesday, South Koreans go to the polls in a snap presidential election to replace Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted from office in April after his brief martial law attempt sent shockwaves through the country. Investors are also awaiting inflation figures from Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines later this week. - Reuters

Indian all-party delegation meets Malaysian leaders in key diplomatic outreach

Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 2 (ANI): An all-party delegation from India, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, held a series of key diplomatic engagements in Malaysia, meeting with representatives of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), as part of a broader outreach to strengthen regional ties and convey India's stance on peace and counter-terrorism. The first meeting was held with the DAP, where the Malaysian delegation was headed by YB Tuan M. Kulasegaran V. Murugeson, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms). The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, including regional peace, legal cooperation, and the fight against terrorism. The Indian delegation later met with representatives of PKR, the People's Justice Party. The Malaysian side was led by YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity. Both meetings highlighted the growing collaboration and diplomatic engagement between India and Malaysia. Expressing concern over the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Malaysian leaders acknowledged India's 'measured' response and reiterated their support for peace and regional stability. Deputy Minister Kulasegaran termed the incident as 'shocking' and said, 'India has taken necessary action. We spoke about Malaysia's concerns, and we feel India took steps to protect its national interest. We hope cross-border terrorism doesn't take place anymore,' he told ANI. Echoing these sentiments, Deputy Minister Saraswathy Kandasami stated that the Indian delegation conveyed a strong message of peace and development. 'The all-party delegation very clearly conveyed the aspiration of the Indian government that India is not at all interested in war,' she told ANI. She emphasised India's economic priorities, saying, 'India, as the world's fourth-largest economy, is focused on continued economic growth with the goal of becoming the third-largest economy.' She added that the delegation urged Malaysia and other regional countries to support this vision by helping convey the message of peace to Pakistan. Reiterating Malaysia's position, she said, 'Our response has been made very clear by our Prime Minister--that Malaysia also has zero tolerance towards any form of violence, be it in any part of the world.' The Indian delegation includes BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lala, Pradan Baruah, Hemang Joshi; TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee; CPI-M's John Brittas; and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, among others. Their visit is part of a multi-nation tour to brief international partners on India's counter-terrorism efforts and promote regional cooperation. The engagements come in the wake of Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians were killed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. The Indian Armed Forces launched precision strikes targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, neutralising over 100 terrorists from outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The delegation's tour includes stops in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore, underscoring India's commitment to regional peace, security, and development. (ANI)

"India took steps to protect its national interest," says Malaysian minister YB Kulasegaran Murugeson

Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 2 (ANI): Expressing strong concern over the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Malaysian leaders have acknowledged India's measured response and affirmed their support for peace and regional stability. YB Kulasegaran Murugeson, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) of Malaysia, said the incident was 'shocking' and 'should not have happened at all.' Speaking to ANI, Murugeson stated, 'India has taken necessary action. We spoke about Malaysia's concerns, and we feel India took steps to protect its national interest.' He added, 'We hope cross-border terrorism doesn't take place anymore,' underscoring Malaysia's desire for peace in the region. Malaysia's Deputy Minister of National Unity, YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, echoed similar sentiments following a meeting with an Indian all-party delegation. She said the message brought by the delegation was clear -- that India seeks peace and development, not conflict. 'There was a detailed explanation of what had happened on 22 April, and the Indian government's measured reaction after the attack. The all-party delegation very clearly conveyed the aspiration of the Indian government that India is not at all interested in war,' Kandasami told ANI. Highlighting India's economic focus, Kandasami said, 'India, as the world's fourth-largest economy, is focused on continued economic growth with the goal of becoming the third-largest economy. There needs to be an end to this aggression... They were seeking support from Malaysia and other countries in this region.' She emphasised that India and Pakistan are both friendly countries to Malaysia and noted that the Indian delegation urged Malaysia to help convey the message of peace and development to Pakistan. 'They brought us this message so that we could convey it to Pakistan--that the need of the hour is not conflict, but economic development,' she added. Reaffirming Malaysia's stance, Kandasami said, 'Our response has been made very clear by our Prime Minister--that Malaysia also has zero tolerance towards any form of violence, be it in any part of the world.' The Group 3 Indian delegation, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, met with representatives of Malaysia's Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) - People's Justice Party - in Kuala Lumpur. The visit comes in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, which killed 26 people. As part of the operation, Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, eliminating over 100 terrorists affiliated with groups including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The delegation's tour includes visits to Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore to highlight India's firm stance against cross-border terrorism and to reinforce its commitment to peace and development.
