Manchester City begin title quest with convincing win against Wolves

Erling Haaland and new signings Tijjani Reinders and Rayan Cherki combined as Manchester City thrashed Wolves 4-0 in their Premier League opener. Haaland struck twice either side of a fine effort from Reijnders, and substitute Cherki added a late fourth, as City began their quest for a seventh title in nine years in convincing fashion at Molineux. Reijnders also had a hand in both of Haaland's goals in what was a particularly impressive introduction to life in the English top flight. Whilst it may be premature to suggest City have found the ideal replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, it was a very promising showing from the Dutchman. His presence brought dynamism to a City side that also raised eyebrows in other areas. Most notably, goalkeeper James Trafford was handed a debut and Ederson – described as 'number one' by manager Pep Guardiola this week despite speculation over his future – was missing from the squad altogether. The club, however, later confirmed the Brazilian's absence was due to illness, with the 31-year-old suffering from gastroenteritis. John Stones returned in defence for his first appearance since February and another new recruit, Rayan Ait-Nouri, featured against the club he left in the summer. It was an emotional occasion for Wolves as they paid a series of tributes before and during the game to Diogo Jota, their former striker who died last month following a car accident. The visitors assumed control early on but did not create a clear-cut opening until the 19th minute when captain Bernardo Silva crossed for Haaland but the Norwegian, having to stretch too much, headed over. City had some moments of alarm as Wolves got behind the defence. Marshall Munetsi thought he scored when he headed past Trafford from a Matt Doherty cross but he was clearly offside. A chance also appeared to open up for Jean-Ricner Bellegarde but again the flag was raised. City took charge of the game after two moments of brilliance from Reijnders in the space of three minutes. The Netherlands international, whose outings at the Club World Cup may have helped him settle, played a delightful lob over the defence for Rico Lewis and his pull-back presented Haaland with a simple tap-in. Moments later the former AC Milan midfielder applied the finishing touch himself with a superb low strike across goal after Andre Gomes lost possession to Oscar Bobb. Jorgen Strand Larsen spurned a good chance to pull one back after the break when he side-footed narrowly wide and the same player also forced Trafford to palm over. Haaland increased City's lead just after the hour following more incisive work from Reijnders, who received a long ball from Trafford and exchanged passes with Bobb on the right. He continued his run and pulled back for Haaland to sweep home from the edge of the area. Cherki, having been on the field just eight minutes, added to Wolves' woes when he drove in from distance nine minutes from time after combining with Nico O'Reilly.

Spurs get Frank off to flier as Haaland sparks revamped Man City

Richarlison scored twice to give Tottenham manager Thomas Frank a dream home debut with a 3-0 win over Burnley, while Erling Haaland inspired new-look Manchester City's 4-0 rout of Wolves on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The former Brentford boss replaced Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought by lifting the Europa League last term. Postecoglou was undone by Tottenham's worst domestic season since 1976-77 as they finished just above the relegation zone in 17th place. Frank's bid to revive Tottenham's league fortunes got off to the perfect start in north London. Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus' cross to open the scoring. The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison's bicycle kick converted the Ghanaian's delivery. Brennan Johnson was Tottenham's Europa League final hero with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third. "Perfect start or dream start. A good performance against a difficult opponent. I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important," Frank said. At Molineux, Pep Guardiola unveiled his City revamp as he bids to bounce back from last season's third place finish. City's failure to defend the title after winning it for the previous four seasons has prompted a major overhaul from Guardiola. Norway striker Haaland opened the scoring with a 34th minute tap-in from a Rico Lewis pass. Tijjani Reijnders, signed from AC Milan in the close-season, doubled City's lead with a fine finish from an acute angle three minutes later. Haaland blasted City's third goal in the 61st minute before Rayan Cherki, lured from Lyon in the summer, marked his debut by drilling in from the edge of the area in the 81st minute. For the past two seasons, all three promoted teams have gone down. Hoping to buck the trend, Sunderland shocked West Ham 3-0 on their return to the Premier League. Former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka is among pool of new signings attracted to the Stadium of Light. But it was three players key to their promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 who scored. Eliezer Mayenda's looping header gave the Black Cats lift off on the hour mark. Centre-back Dan Ballard headed in the second before Wilson Isidor rounded off a huge win in stoppage time. - Newcastle miss Isak - Newcastle missed the unsettle Alexander Isak as they failed to find the breakthrough against 10-man Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. The Magpies were the dominant side even before Ezri Konsa's red card for bringing down Antony Gordon 24 minutes from time. Isak had not been involved during Newcastle's pre-season as he appears determined to force through a move to Liverpool, who reportedly saw a £110 million ($149 million) offer for the Swedish striker rejected. The two clubs face off in their next league match at St. James' Park on August 25. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he wants an end to the saga one way or another. "From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It's taking away the focus of the players and the supporters," said Howe "We want to be united together. We'd like a resolution, but we're not in control of that." Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz struck in the 96th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw at Brighton after Matt O'Riley's penalty put the Seagulls in front. Arsenal, top-flight runners-up for the last three seasons, are in action on Sunday when they travel to Manchester United. Champions Liverpool began their title defence with a 4-2 win against Bournemouth on Friday. kca-smg/pb

Wolves 0 Manchester City 4 – How good are Bobb and Reijnders? Is Trafford No 1? What must Pep still solve?

Tijjani Reijnders delivered a superb Premier League debut and Oscar Bobb a reminder of his great ability as Erling Haaland scored twice to help Manchester City sweep aside Wolves in their opening game. Wolves paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota before kick-off with a stand-size display of him celebrating one of his many goals in his two years for the club before he joined Liverpool in 2020, as both teams observed a minute's applause for the forward and his brother Andre Silva, who died in July. Advertisement When the game began it was Wolves who thought they had taken an early lead but Marshall Munetsi's header was ruled out for offside before City scored twice before half-time through Haaland and the impressive Reijnders. Haaland, who has scored on the opening day of the Premier League in each of his four seasons, added a third for City on 61 minutes with a powerful finish at the end of another fine move. Rayan Cherki also scored on his league debut for City, firing in a fourth after a clever exchange of passes. Here The Athletic's Jordan Campbell breaks down the key talking points. Anyone still talking about Savinho? Much of the discussion in the build up to City's opening game centred on the future of the Brazilian winger amid transfer interest from Spurs, but Oscar Bobb produced a display that suggested he may make the right wing position his own regardless of Savinho's future. The 22-year-old Norwegian looked destined to break into the team this time last year when he starred in pre-season and won man of the match in the Community Shield. A leg break days later put paid to that notion and when he returned to the team at the tail end of last season, there was a rustiness that suggested the window of opportunity may have closed on him. Not if the level he produced at Molineux is anything to go by. He brought everything Pep Guardiola demands from his wingers. Time after time he received the ball on the touchline and gradually took City up the pitch, showing a maturity to understand when to retain the ball and when to drive at the full-back. There is a delicacy and flow to the way he dribbles that makes him so hard to read. In the 33rd minute he dazzled three or four Wolves defenders inside the penalty, snaking in so many different directions that they were left chasing shadows. Advertisement But it wasn't just the flashy he did well. He was decisive. For the second goal he led City's counter attack in which he had Reijnders to his left and Haaland to his right. It would have been easy to panic and rush but he took his time before picking the perfect weight of pass to Reijnders to finish first time. Just as it felt like City may be wilting under the intensity of Wolves's pressure, Tijjani Reijnders decided it was time to take things down a notch or two. By that, he meant luring in two players, producing Andreas Iniesta's famous La Croqueta skill to glide through two defenders – all while moving at barely more than walking pace. Rico Lewis reacted by running in behind from right back but there was no clear route through to him so Reijnders chose to deliver the ball via the aerial route. Scooping the pass while on the run, he took out three Wolves defenders and allowed Lewis to cross the ball on the half-volley for Haaland to tap home. It was a continuation of the classy touches he showed in the Club World Cup after joining from AC Milan, but this was the day the Dutchman introduced himself to the Premier League. The pre-assist so may not count toward the headline statistics but he scored a beautifully taken goal to make it 2-0 and then cut the ball back for Haaland to notch his third. Not a bad first day at the new office. This was a day ten years in the making for James Trafford, who joined the academy as a 12-year old. Having only made his return from Burnley two weeks ago, Guardiola confirmed on Friday that Ederson would continue as his No1 if fit. The Brazilian was not in the squad, though, so Trafford made his long-awaited senior debut. While his first act in City's friendly against Palermo last week saw him caught on the ball, it took until the 75th minute for the first hint of any hesitancy at Molineux. Advertisement Nerves would have been natural but he was assured throughout, bar one slack pass that was almost intercepted in the first-half. There was not much in the way of big saves for him to make but there were several time he aggressively came off his line to intercept a cross or ball over the top. The only times he was called into action were in the first half when the ball broke to Marshall Munetsi at the back post, which saw Trafford block the ball with his foot after sprinting out to close the angle with both arms and legs splayed wide. He tipped a deflected shot over the bar in the second half and parried another Strand Larsen shot wide but both were comfortable. He took a little too long on the ball when an awkward back pass came to him on his own goal line and he only got his pass away just as the attacker made contact. There was a 15-minute spell midway through the first half when it looked like City could crumble. Munetsi scored a goal that was disallowed but Wolves were buoyed by how often they were able to counter attack from slack City passes. Kolo Toure was out on the touchline urging the players to calm down but they were unable to get control of the game in the way they used to do so easily. Two quickfire goals helped dampen the spirit of the home crowd but the lack of security on the ball in the first half could easily have seen them trailing. John Stones shone in what was his first Premier League start since February and the understanding between him and Ruen Dias helped provide City with an assuredness they lacked for much of last season in his absence. Finding a way to incorporate so much attacking talent into the starting XI is never going to be easy but Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki both starting on the bench, with Phil Foden not fit to make the squad, highlighted the challenge Guardiola is going to have this season. It is a pleasant position to be in but Guardiola did not want to be in the situation where he was forced to leave so many players out. We will bring you this after he has spoken at the post-match press conference. Saturday, August 23: Tottenham (Home), Premier League, 12.30pm UK, 7.30am ET Spot the pattern.
